Understanding Your Outdoor AC Unit.

Compressor, Condenser, or Heat Pump?

If you’ve ever called for air conditioning service, you’ve probably heard several different names for the large unit that sits outside your home.

Some people call it the compressor.

Others call it the condenser.

You may also hear condensing unit, outside unit, heat pump, or simply the AC unit.

So which one is correct?

The answer is: almost all of them—depending on the situation.

Let’s clear up the confusion.

What Is the Outdoor Unit?

The outdoor unit is one half of a split-system air conditioning system.

Its primary job is to remove heat from your home and release it outdoors.

It works together with the indoor air handler (or furnace and evaporator coil) to cool your home through the refrigeration cycle.

Although it looks like a single piece of equipment from the outside, it’s actually several major components working together.

What Is It Actually Called?

Technically speaking, the outdoor unit is called a condensing unit.

If it provides both heating and cooling, it’s technically called a heat pump condensing unit.

These are the names you’ll typically see on manufacturer literature, installation manuals, equipment data plates, and permit documents.

Why Do People Call It Different Things?

Over the years, several names have become common in everyday conversation.

“The Compressor”

This is probably the most common name homeowners use.

Technically, the compressor is only one component located inside the outdoor unit.

However, because it’s the heart of the system—and often the most expensive component—many people simply refer to the entire outdoor unit as “the compressor.”

While not technically correct, HVAC technicians generally understand what you mean.

“The Condenser”

Many homeowners call the outdoor unit “the condenser.”

This is also very common.

Technically, the condenser is the coil inside the outdoor unit where refrigerant releases heat to the outdoor air.

Again, people usually use the term to describe the entire outdoor unit, and most technicians understand exactly what they’re referring to.

“The Condensing Unit”

This is the technically correct name for a standard air conditioning outdoor unit.

It includes:

  • Compressor
  • Condenser coil
  • Condenser fan motor
  • Fan blade
  • Electrical compartment
  • Controls and safety devices
  • Protective cabinet

“The Heat Pump”

If your system both heats and cools your home using refrigeration, then your outdoor equipment is a heat pump.

A heat pump looks very similar to a traditional air conditioner but contains additional components—most notably a reversing valve—that allow it to move heat in either direction.

Because of this, the technically correct name is a heat pump condensing unit.

“The Outside Unit”

This is probably the simplest description—and it’s perfectly acceptable in everyday conversation.

Most HVAC companies use phrases like “outdoor unit” or “outside unit” when speaking with homeowners because they’re easy to understand.

What’s Actually Inside the Outdoor Unit?

Although it looks like one machine, several important components work together.

Compressor

The compressor is the heart of the refrigeration system.

It pumps refrigerant through the entire air conditioning system and creates the pressure difference needed for cooling.

Condenser Coil

The condenser coil releases the heat your home no longer wants.

As outdoor air passes across the coil, heat leaves the refrigerant and is discharged outside.

Condenser Fan Motor

The fan motor pulls outdoor air through the condenser coil.

Without proper airflow, the refrigerant cannot reject heat efficiently.

Contactor

The contactor is an electrically controlled switch that turns the outdoor unit on and off whenever your thermostat calls for cooling.

Capacitor

The capacitor stores and releases electrical energy to help the compressor and fan motor start and run efficiently.

Control Components

Depending on the system, the outdoor unit may also include:

  • Pressure switches
  • Defrost control board
  • Reversing valve
  • Inverter control board
  • Temperature sensors
  • Time delays
  • Surge protection
  • Crankcase heater

Modern HVAC systems often contain sophisticated electronics that continuously monitor and protect the equipment.

How Does the Outdoor Unit Cool Your Home?

Many homeowners assume the outdoor unit creates cold air.

It doesn’t.

Instead, it removes heat from your home.

Here’s a simplified version of what happens:

  1. The indoor coil absorbs heat from your home’s air.
  2. Refrigerant carries that heat to the outdoor unit.
  3. The compressor raises the refrigerant’s pressure and temperature.
  4. The condenser coil releases that heat into the outdoor air.
  5. The cooled refrigerant returns indoors to repeat the process.

The outdoor unit’s job is to reject heat—not produce cold.

Is Every Outdoor Unit a Heat Pump?

No.

There are two primary types of residential outdoor units.

Straight Cool Air Conditioner

A straight cool system only provides cooling.

Heating is supplied by another source, such as:

  • Electric heat strips
  • A gas furnace
  • An oil furnace

Heat Pump

A heat pump provides both cooling and heating.

By reversing the flow of refrigerant, it can remove heat from your home during the summer and bring heat into your home during the winter.

The Bottom Line

Whether you call it the compressor, condenser, outside unit, condensing unit, or heat pump, most HVAC professionals know exactly what you’re referring to.

Technically speaking:

  • The compressor is one component inside the outdoor unit.

  • The condensing unit is the complete outdoor assembly.
  • A heat pump condensing unit is a condensing unit that can both heat and cool your home.
