Before You Call an HVAC Technician: 10 Things Every Homeowner Should Check First

Nobody wants to pay for a service call only to find out the problem was something simple.

While some HVAC issues require professional diagnosis, there are several things homeowners can safely check before scheduling an appointment. Taking just a few minutes could save you time, money, and frustration.

Here are ten things we recommend checking first.

1. Check Your Thermostat

It happens more often than you’d think.

Make sure:

  • It’s set to the correct mode (Cool or Heat)
  • The temperature is set where you want it
  • The batteries aren’t dead (if applicable)

Sometimes a thermostat accidentally gets switched or bumped without anyone noticing.

2. Check the Air Filter

A dirty air filter is one of the most common causes of HVAC problems.

A clogged filter can:

  • Restrict airflow
  • Cause poor cooling
  • Increase energy bills
  • Lead to frozen evaporator coils

If your filter looks dirty, replace it before calling for service.

3. Make Sure the Breakers Haven’t Tripped

Your HVAC system usually has multiple breakers.

Check:

  • The indoor air handler or furnace breaker
  • The outdoor condenser breaker

6. Check That All Vents Are Open

Closing supply vents rarely saves energy.

Instead, it can reduce airflow and make your system work harder.

Walk through your home and make sure supply and return vents aren’t blocked by:

  • Furniture
  • Rugs
  • Curtains
  • Boxes

7. Make Sure the Drain Line Isn’t Overflowing

If your system has shut down unexpectedly, check the condensate drain and any overflow safety switch.

Many systems automatically shut off when the drain backs up to help prevent water damage.

If you know how to safely clear your drain line, you may be able to restore operation. If not, it’s time to call for service.

8. Check the Outdoor Unit

Walk outside and see if:

  • The fan is spinning
  • Leaves or debris are blocking airflow
  • Shrubs are growing too close to the unit

Keeping the outdoor unit clear helps it operate efficiently.

9. Ask Yourself: Is It Keeping Up?

On extremely hot Florida afternoons, it’s normal for your air conditioner to run longer than usual.

If your home is maintaining the thermostat setting, your system may simply be working as designed.

If the temperature continues to rise despite the system running constantly, that’s a sign it should be inspected.

10. Listen and Look

Before calling, take a moment to notice what’s happening.

Can you answer questions like:

  • Is the indoor blower running?
  • Is the outdoor fan running?
  • Is the outdoor unit making unusual noises?
  • Is warm or cool air coming from the vents?
  • Did the problem start suddenly or gradually?
