Troubleshooting Ride-Along: Why Does My Thermostat Randomly Go Blank?

Location: Ormond Beach, Florida
Complaint: Thermostat randomly goes completely blank and the AC stops running.

Today’s complaint sounds simple:

“The thermostat keeps going blank.”

In Florida, there’s one thing we’re immediately thinking about.

The drain.

A backed-up condensate drain trips the float switch, the float switch interrupts the low-voltage circuit, and suddenly the thermostat looks dead.

We’ve seen it a million times.

So naturally, that’s probably what this is.

Probably.

Oh, and the air handler is in the attic.

Excellent.

First Stop: Wawa

Before heading to the house, we make an important diagnostic preparation:

Wawa.

Because we’re about to climb into a Florida attic and we don’t know if we’ll ever return.

Water acquired.

Will updated.

Family notified.

Let’s go.

The Thermostat Is Blank

We arrive in Ormond Beach and sure enough:

Nothing.

No temperature.

No display.

No cooling.

The thermostat looks like somebody removed the batteries from a calculator in 1997.

A blank thermostat usually means we’re missing power somewhere in the low-voltage control circuit.

So now we work backward.

And because we’re in Florida with an attic air handler, we’re absolutely checking the condensate safeties first.

Surely It’s the Drain

Up into the attic.

We check the drain.

No obvious backup.

We check the float switch.

Not tripped.

Secondary pan isn’t full of water.

Okay.

So much for the easy answer.

This is where troubleshooting actually begins.

Because “blank thermostat” isn’t a diagnosis.

It just tells us that the thermostat isn’t getting the power it needs.

Now we have to find out why.

Follow the 24 Volts

The thermostat and controls operate on low voltage supplied by a transformer at the indoor equipment.

If that power disappears somewhere along the way, the thermostat goes blank.

So we start tracing the electrical circuit.

Do we have incoming power?

Is the transformer energized?

Do we have approximately 24 volts leaving the transformer?

Is the low-voltage fuse intact?

Are the safeties closed?

Where exactly do we lose power?

We’re basically following electricity until it stops.

And eventually this service call takes a turn.

Wait. The Heat Kit?

The problem wasn’t the thermostat.

It wasn’t the float switch.

It wasn’t the drain.

And it wasn’t even the transformer.

The problem traced back to the breaker feeding the heat kit.

The breaker was bad.

And because of how the air handler and its controls were powered, that failing breaker was intermittently interrupting power to the equipment.

When power disappeared:

Thermostat blank.

When power returned:

Thermostat alive again.

Well then.

Glad we brought water.

Why This One Could Have Been Easy to Misdiagnose

Imagine stopping at the first plausible answer.

Blank thermostat?

Florida?

Attic air handler?

Drain.

Clear the drain.

Collect payment.

Leave.

Then the thermostat goes blank again tomorrow.

That’s not troubleshooting.

That’s playing the odds.

And honestly, the odds aren’t terrible. Clogged condensate drains cause a ridiculous number of Florida AC shutdowns.

But the homeowner isn’t paying us to identify the most common problem.

They’re paying us to identify their problem.

What Can Make a Thermostat Go Completely Blank?

Quite a few things.

Depending on the system, we’d consider:

  • condensate float switch
  • clogged drain
  • loss of power to the air handler
  • tripped or failed breaker
  • blown low-voltage fuse
  • failed transformer
  • loose low-voltage wiring
  • damaged thermostat wire
  • failed thermostat
  • equipment door switch
  • control-board problem

That’s why the symptom alone isn’t enough.

Blank thermostat = somewhere, we lost power or the control circuit opened.

Now go find where.

The Ormond Beach Verdict

Complaint: Thermostat intermittently goes completely blank.

Initial suspicion: Condensate drain / float switch.

Drain: Not the problem.

Float switch: Not the problem.

What we actually found: Failed breaker feeding the heat kit and indoor equipment.

Repair: Replaced the faulty breaker.

After repair: Power remained stable and thermostat/system operation returned to normal.

And somewhere in Ormond Beach, a perfectly innocent condensate drain avoided being blamed for a crime it didn’t commit.

The Bigger Lesson

Common problems are common.

That’s useful.

It tells us where to start.

But it doesn’t tell us where to stop.

If your thermostat suddenly goes blank in Florida, we’re probably going to check your drain pretty early in the process.

We’d be idiots not to.

But if the drain is clear and the float isn’t tripped, we’re not going to stand there staring at it until it confesses.

We move on.

Follow the power.

Follow the circuit.

Follow the evidence.

And sometimes that means crawling around a Florida attic until you discover that the mysterious blank thermostat downstairs is being caused by a bad breaker on the heat kit upstairs.
