Troubleshooting Ride-Along: Why Does My AC Buzz Inside the Wall?

Complaint: Strange buzzing noise while the air conditioner was running.

This is one of those service calls where the homeowner can describe the problem perfectly:

“It’s making a buzzing noise.”

Unfortunately, air conditioners contain approximately 47 different things capable of making a buzzing noise.

Okay, maybe not 47.

But enough that we’re not ordering a compressor because something went BUZZZZZ.

Let’s go find it.

First: Make It Make the Noise

This sounds obvious, but it’s important.

Before touching anything, we wanted to hear exactly what the homeowner was hearing.

We started the system and let it operate.

There it was.

Buzzing.

The system was running, so this wasn’t simply a dead outdoor unit sitting there humming while a compressor struggled to start.

Something was creating noise during operation.

Now we needed to find out where it was coming from.

Follow the Vibration

HVAC noises are deceptive.

The place where you hear a noise isn’t necessarily the place where the noise originates.

Copper refrigerant tubing is especially good at this.

A vibration can originate at one component, travel through the copper, and suddenly become much louder where the tubing touches something else.

So instead of immediately replacing whatever component happened to be closest to the sound, we started tracing it.

Eventually, we found our culprit.

The Filter Drier Was Buzzing

The vibration was coming from the filter drier in the refrigerant line.

If you’ve never noticed one before, a filter drier is a small component installed in the refrigerant circuit. Its job is to help capture moisture and contaminants before they cause problems elsewhere in the system.

Normally, you shouldn’t have any reason to think about it.

This one wanted attention.

BUZZZZZZ.

But here’s the important part:

Finding the noisy component still doesn’t automatically tell us why it’s noisy.

Is the Filter Drier Restricted?

Now we had an actual diagnostic question.

A filter drier can become restricted.

And unlike:

“That thing sounds weird.”

a restriction gives us something we can actually test.

If refrigerant is being restricted as it passes through a component, we can look for evidence of a pressure drop and corresponding temperature change.

So we’d check the refrigeration system rather than simply replacing the noisy part because our ears pointed at it.

That means looking at things such as:

  • refrigerant pressures
  • superheat
  • subcooling
  • liquid-line temperature
  • temperature entering and leaving the filter drier
  • system performance
  • refrigerant flow

We’re trying to answer two separate questions:

Where is the noise coming from?

and

Is the noise telling us something is actually wrong?

Those aren’t always the same question.

Why We Don’t Diagnose AC Systems by Sound

There are noises that immediately deserve attention.

A compressor struggling to start.

A motor with failing bearings.

A fan blade hitting something.

Electrical arcing.

Refrigerant screaming through a restriction.

But the sound itself is still only a clue.

Imagine replacing a compressor because you heard buzzing from the refrigerant lines…

…and then starting the new compressor and hearing:

BUZZZZZZ.

That would be an expensive way to learn this lesson.

So we measure.

What This Service Call Teaches Us

This wasn’t a:

“Your AC is buzzing, therefore your compressor is bad.”

service call.

It was:

Your AC is buzzing. Let’s find the buzz.

Then:

We found the buzz. Now let’s figure out why that component is buzzing.

That’s troubleshooting.

Each answer gives us the next question.

And eventually the possibilities get narrowed down until we’re no longer guessing.

The Bigger Lesson: Follow the Evidence

Homeowners sometimes apologize when they call us because the only description they can give is:

“It’s making a weird noise.”

Don’t apologize.

That’s useful information.

Tell us:

  • when it happens
  • where you hear it
  • whether it happens during startup or while running
  • whether it’s constant or intermittent
  • whether the AC is still cooling
  • whether the noise recently changed

Then let us chase it.

Because sometimes a strange AC noise really does point toward a serious problem.

And sometimes the component demanding everyone’s attention is a little filter drier vibrating in the refrigerant line.

Either way, we’re not guessing.

We follow the noise. Then we follow the measurements.

You turn the air conditioner on.

A few seconds later:

BUZZZZZZZZ.

Except the noise isn’t coming from the air handler.

It isn’t obviously coming from the outdoor unit either.

It sounds like it’s coming from inside the wall.

That’s a real thing.

And before anybody starts cutting drywall open, let’s figure out what you’re actually hearing.

The Service Call

The homeowner’s complaint was simple:

“Whenever the AC runs, there’s a buzzing noise coming from this wall.”

The system was cooling.

No breakers were tripping. The thermostat wasn’t going blank. Nothing appeared obviously wrong with the equipment.

But when the compressor came on, you could hear the buzz inside the house.

So instead of starting with the wall, we started with the air conditioner.

Because copper refrigerant lines can carry vibration a surprisingly long distance.

Your Refrigerant Lines Run Through the House

A typical split air-conditioning system has two copper refrigerant lines connecting the outdoor unit to the indoor evaporator coil.

Depending on the house, those lines may travel through:

  • an exterior wall
  • an attic
  • a garage
  • a chase
  • between floors
  • behind drywall

Normally, you never know they’re there.

But if the refrigerant piping begins vibrating and that copper is touching framing, drywall, another pipe, or some other part of the structure, the house can basically become a giant speaker.

The source of the vibration might be twenty feet away from where you hear it.

We Actually Had One Like This

On one real Klein Cooling service call, we had a strange buzzing noise that turned out to be coming from the liquid-line filter drier.

That’s the little component installed in the refrigerant line to help capture moisture and contaminants.

The interesting part wasn’t just the noise.

It was how the vibration traveled through the copper.

If you only followed your ears, it would have been very easy to start looking in the wrong place.

That’s why an unusual refrigerant-line noise isn’t automatically:

“Your compressor is bad.”

We want to know where the vibration actually starts.

What Can Make Refrigerant Lines Buzz?

There are several possibilities.

The copper is touching the house

Sometimes nothing is actually wrong with the refrigeration system.

The copper line may simply be resting against wood, metal, drywall or another pipe.

A small vibration at the outdoor unit travels through the copper until it reaches that contact point.

Suddenly a tiny vibration becomes a very noticeable buzz inside the house.

Refrigerant flow is creating noise

Refrigerant isn’t just sitting inside those copper lines.

It’s moving under pressure and changing temperature and state as it travels through the system.

Under certain operating conditions, refrigerant flow can create hissing, humming, rushing or vibrating sounds.

The question is why.

A filter drier may be involved

A filter drier can sometimes become a source of unusual refrigerant noise.

That doesn’t automatically mean the filter drier is bad.

But if we suspect a restriction, we can actually test for one.

A restriction creates a pressure drop. Depending on where it occurs and how severe it is, we may also find a measurable temperature difference across the restricted component.

That’s a lot more useful than:

“Sounds funny. Let’s replace it.”

Something else may be causing the vibration

The compressor, refrigerant charge, metering device, piping installation and other components can all affect refrigerant-line noise.

That’s why we don’t diagnose this one with our ears alone.

What We’d Actually Check

First, we’d reproduce the noise.

Then we’d try to determine whether we’re hearing an electrical buzz, mechanical vibration, airflow noise or refrigerant-flow noise.

If it appears to be traveling through the refrigerant lines, we’d work backward toward the source.

We may check:

  • refrigerant pressures
  • superheat
  • subcooling
  • line temperatures
  • temperature across the filter drier
  • refrigerant charge
  • compressor operation
  • line-set mounting and supports
  • places where copper contacts the structure
  • evidence of a refrigerant restriction

And sometimes the most sophisticated diagnostic instrument on the truck is still:

our hand.

Touch the copper.

Does the vibration change?

Support the line temporarily.

Does the noise disappear?

Follow it.

You’re trying to find where the vibration originates, not simply where the homeowner happens to hear it.

Don’t Start Cutting Open the Wall Yet

If the buzzing really is being amplified where the refrigerant line touches something inside a wall, accessing that location may eventually be necessary.

But we’d much rather determine that before somebody starts performing exploratory surgery on the living room.

Because the wall may only be where you’re hearing the problem.

It may not be where the problem is.

Is an AC Buzzing Inside the Wall Dangerous?

It depends on what’s causing it.

A refrigerant line lightly vibrating against framing may be primarily an annoyance.

An electrical buzz, struggling compressor, refrigerant restriction, loose component or severe vibration is a different story.

And persistent copper vibration shouldn’t simply be ignored forever. Copper that continually rubs against another surface can eventually wear.

So if your AC suddenly develops a noise it never made before, it’s worth figuring out what changed.

The Klein Cooling Rule

A noise is a clue.

It isn’t a diagnosis.

If your AC buzzes inside the wall, we’re not going to condemn your compressor because compressors can buzz.

We’re not going to replace a filter drier because filter driers can make noise.

And we’re definitely not cutting holes in drywall because that’s where the sound seems loudest.

We’re going to follow the evidence until we find out what is actually making the noise.

Because sometimes the thing making all that racket isn’t where you think it is.

And sometimes it’s just your house acting like a really expensive speaker.
