Troubleshooting Ride-Along: I Put Vinegar Down My AC Drain and Used a Shop-Vac. Why Does It Keep Shutting Off?

You did what everybody told you to do.

The AC stopped running.

You put vinegar down the drain.

You hooked up the Shop-Vac.

You sucked a horrifying amount of mystery sludge out of the pipe.

The AC came back on.

Victory.

Until it shut off again.

So you did it again.

Vinegar. Shop-Vac. AC comes back on.

Then it shuts off again.

At some point, you’ve cleaned the drain enough times that it’s reasonable to start wondering:

What if the drain isn’t actually clogged anymore?

And you might be right.

Customer Complaint

“I’ve put vinegar down my AC drain and used a Shop-Vac to clear it, but the AC keeps shutting off.”

We hear some version of this pretty regularly in Florida.

And first, the homeowner wasn’t doing anything ridiculous.

Your air conditioner removes a tremendous amount of moisture from the air, and all of that water has to leave through a drain. Homeowners commonly clean their AC drains, and a wet/dry vacuum can absolutely pull a blockage out of the line.

The problem is assuming:

“I cleaned the drain, so the drainage problem must be fixed.”

Maybe.

But if the AC keeps shutting off afterward, something is still happening.

So instead of cleaning it for the fifth time, we needed to figure out why.

What We Knew Going In

Most Florida AC systems have some way of protecting your house if the condensate water doesn’t drain properly.

Often, that’s a float switch.

It’s a pretty simple little device.

Water backs up.

The float rises.

The AC shuts off.

Annoying?

Absolutely.

But that’s intentional.

The alternative can be allowing the AC to continue making water until it ends up in your closet, attic, ceiling or floor.

We’ll take the uncomfortable house.

Drywall is expensive.

What We Checked First

Since the homeowner had already been working on the drain, that’s where we started.

Was there an obvious blockage?

Was water able to move through the drain?

Was the float switch shutting the system off?

Was the drain installed correctly?

And then there was one really important question:

Was there water in the trap?

Because using the Shop-Vac may have solved one problem…

…and accidentally created another.

Wait. I Put Vinegar Down It AND Vacuumed It. How Is It Still Not Draining?

Because the problem might not be dirt.

This is where AC drains get a little weird.

Some air handlers need a trap in the drain piping to drain properly while the indoor fan is running.

If you don’t know what an AC drain trap is, don’t worry.

You weren’t supposed to.

You’re the homeowner.

Basically, it’s a section of the drain designed to hold some water.

And yes, we realize how strange that sounds.

We’re trying to get water OUT of the air conditioner…

…so naturally we intentionally keep some water IN the pipe.

Welcome to HVAC.

But that water serves an important purpose.

The blower inside your air conditioner moves a lot of air. Depending on the design of the equipment, the air pressure inside the unit can interfere with water trying to leave through the drain.

A properly installed and filled trap helps the drain work correctly while the AC is running.

And there’s the problem with the Shop-Vac.

What We Found

The homeowner had successfully cleared the drain.

But every time the Shop-Vac was connected, it also sucked the water out of the trap.

The drain line could be perfectly clean.

The vinegar could have done its thing.

The Shop-Vac could have removed the gunk.

And the drainage system still wasn’t ready to operate properly.

The trap needed to be filled with water again.

Without that water in the trap, the AC would run and start producing condensation.

Then drainage would become a problem.

Water would begin backing up.

The float switch would rise.

The AC would shut off.

Again.

Which naturally sent the homeowner right back to the drain because:

“Apparently it’s clogged again.”

Except it wasn’t.

What We Did

After making sure the drain was clear, we filled the trap with water.

Then we tested it.

And this part matters.

We didn’t just pour some water down the drain with the AC turned off and declare victory.

We needed to know that the drain would work while the air conditioner was actually operating.

Because that’s when the AC makes water.

A drain that works beautifully as long as the AC isn’t running would be a somewhat significant design flaw.

With the trap properly filled and the system operating, the drain worked normally.

What We Ruled Out

The homeowner wasn’t repeatedly failing to clear the same clog.

The Shop-Vac was doing its job.

The float switch wasn’t the problem either.

In fact, the float was doing exactly what we wanted it to do.

When water backed up, it shut the air conditioner off before the situation became a much more expensive water problem.

The issue was that after clearing the drain, the trap wasn’t being returned to the condition it needed to operate correctly.

Clean drain.

Empty trap.

AC runs.

Water doesn’t drain properly.

Float rises.

AC shuts off.

Grab Shop-Vac.

Repeat until everyone loses their mind.

Before We Left

The drain was clear.

The trap was filled.

Water was draining properly with the AC operating.

The float safety was working normally.

And the air conditioner stayed running.

Most importantly, the homeowner no longer needed to keep dragging the Shop-Vac outside every time the AC decided it had worked long enough.

The Verdict

The AC drain did not keep clogging.

After the homeowner used a Shop-Vac to clear the drain, the water in the condensate trap was also removed.

The trap wasn’t being refilled afterward.

Once the air conditioner started running again and producing condensate, the drain couldn’t operate properly. Water backed up, activated the float safety and shut the system off.

Which made it look exactly like the drain had clogged again.

The homeowner was successfully treating the symptom over and over.

The problem was what happened after the drain was cleared.

Other Reasons Your AC Drain May Keep Backing Up

This particular problem turned out to be an empty trap.

But if you’ve put vinegar down your AC drain, used a Shop-Vac and it still keeps backing up or shutting your AC off, don’t assume you just need to clean it harder.

We’ve seen plenty of other causes.

The drain may still be partially clogged

You can pull an impressive amount of disgusting material out of an AC drain without actually removing the entire restriction.

Water may move through a partially blocked line during a quick test but not fast enough to keep up with hours of AC operation.

So:

“I got a bunch of stuff out”

doesn’t necessarily mean:

“The entire drain is clear.”

Unfortunately.

There may not be a trap at all

We’ve seen this one cause much bigger problems than an AC simply shutting off.

Some air handlers require the condensate drain to be properly trapped so water can leave while the blower is operating.

If the drain needs a trap and nobody installed one, you can pour vinegar into that pipe until your house smells like a salad.

It’s still not going to install a trap.

We’ve actually had water-damage calls caused by exactly this problem.

The pipe existed.

It just wasn’t installed in a way that allowed the AC to drain properly while operating.

The drain piping itself may be compromised

Sometimes the problem isn’t inside the pipe.

The pipe itself can be the problem.

A drain can be damaged, disconnected, improperly pitched or poorly routed.

There can be a sag somewhere that holds water.

A connection can fail.

Part of the drain can shift.

And depending on where the pipe runs, the problem may not be somewhere you can easily see.

A Shop-Vac can’t repair broken PVC.

No matter how enthusiastically you use it.

Gravity may not be enough

AC drains normally rely on gravity whenever possible.

Water goes downhill.

Very advanced technology.

But sometimes the equipment location or available drain route doesn’t provide a reliable way to get that water where it needs to go.

In those situations, the system may need a condensate pump.

The AC drains into a small reservoir, and the pump moves the water to an appropriate location.

If the drainage route itself is the problem, repeatedly clearing the line isn’t going to change gravity.

The float switch could have a problem

Float switches are safety devices, but they’re still components.

They can stick.

They can be installed incorrectly.

They can fail.

So if the AC keeps shutting off, we verify that water is actually causing the float to activate rather than simply assuming:

“Must be the drain.”

And no, our preferred repair for an annoying float switch isn’t bypassing it.

The switch is there because water damage gets expensive very quickly.

Something completely different may be shutting off the AC

This is another reason the customer’s symptom matters more than our first guess.

An AC can shut off because of electrical problems, thermostat issues, equipment safeties and other faults that have nothing to do with the drain.

If there’s no evidence that condensate is causing the shutdown, we keep troubleshooting.

Your air conditioner has an impressive number of ways to ruin an afternoon.

We don’t want to assume which one it picked.

Vinegar and a Shop-Vac Aren’t a Drain Diagnosis

There’s nothing wrong with maintaining your AC drain.

And if you have an occasional blockage, a wet/dry vacuum can sometimes get you running again.

But if you keep doing the same thing and the problem keeps coming back, stop assuming you need more vinegar.

We’ve seen repeated drainage problems caused by:

An empty trap.

No trap at all.

A partially blocked drain.

Damaged drain piping.

A poorly routed drain.

A drainage situation that needed a condensate pump.

And problems that weren’t actually related to the drain in the first place.

So if your Saturday morning routine has become:

Coffee.

Vinegar.

Shop-Vac.

Reset AC.

…we should probably take a look at it.

Clearing an occasional blockage is one thing.

Needing to repeatedly clear the same drain just to keep your air conditioner running is the system telling you something else is going on.

What This Means for You

If your AC keeps shutting off after you’ve already cleaned the drain, the next question probably shouldn’t be:

“How do I clean it better?”

It should be:

“Why isn’t this water draining properly?”

And don’t get mad at the float switch.

It’s probably the only thing standing between you and an entirely different Google search:

“Why is water coming through my ceiling?”

On this call, the homeowner really had cleared the drain.

They just didn’t know that using the Shop-Vac had also emptied the trap.

Another home might have no trap at all.

Another might have damaged piping.

Another might need a pump.

Same homeowner complaint.

Completely different repairs.

“I put vinegar down my AC drain and used a Shop-Vac, but it keeps shutting off.”

That’s an excellent description of the symptom.

It just isn’t the diagnosis.
