Troubleshooting Ride-Along: Why Does My AC Keep Tripping the Breaker?

The AC stops working.

You walk over to the electrical panel.

There’s the problem.

One of the breakers is tripped.

So you reset it.

The AC comes back on.

Problem solved.

Until…

Click.

It trips again.

At this point, please stop resetting it.

A breaker that trips once might be something we need to investigate.

A breaker that keeps tripping is telling us something.

And we’ve had two service calls around Ormond Beach that demonstrate just how different that “something” can be.

On one, the problem was an electric heat kit.

On another in Halifax Plantation, it was the compressor.

Same homeowner observation.

Very different diagnosis.

Customer Complaint

“My AC keeps tripping the breaker.”

Good. That’s actually very useful information.

But now we’re going to start asking questions.

What is it doing—or not doing?

Does the breaker trip immediately?

Does the AC run for ten minutes first?

Does it happen when cooling starts?

Does it happen when the heat comes on?

Does the indoor unit keep running when the breaker trips?

Does everything shut off?

Then:

“When did this start?”

And there’s another question that’s particularly important on a breaker call:

“Which breaker is tripping?”

The indoor air handler?

The outdoor unit?

A breaker specifically serving electric heat?

The main breaker?

Those answers can completely change where we start.

Because:

“My AC keeps tripping the breaker”

doesn’t tell us what’s wrong.

It tells us that an electrical protection device is seeing something it doesn’t like.

Now we need to find out what.

First: The Breaker Is Usually Not the Enemy

This is the same principle we’ve seen with float switches and pressure safeties.

The breaker shutting the equipment off can be annoying.

Especially when it’s August.

But the breaker has a job.

It’s there to protect the electrical circuit from excessive current or a fault condition.

So when we arrive and find a tripped breaker, our first thought isn’t:

“How do we make this breaker stop tripping?”

It’s:

“Why did it trip?”

Because putting in a new breaker doesn’t fix a compressor that’s drawing excessive current.

And repeatedly resetting the existing breaker definitely doesn’t.

The Ormond Beach Call: The Heat Kit Was Tripping the Breaker

On one Ormond Beach service call, the breaker problem led us to the electric heat kit.

If you moved to Florida from somewhere up north, this part of your AC system may be unfamiliar.

Many Florida air handlers have electric resistance heat strips installed inside them.

Think of them somewhat like the heating elements inside an electric toaster.

Except considerably larger.

And thankfully not located on your kitchen counter.

When electric heat is called, those elements energize and the blower moves air across them.

They draw a substantial amount of electrical current.

On this particular system, the heat-kit circuit had developed a problem that was causing the breaker to trip.

So the breaker wasn’t randomly failing.

It was responding to an electrical problem in the equipment it was protecting.

The Timing Was a Huge Clue

This is why:

“When does it trip?”

matters almost as much as:

“Which breaker trips?”

Suppose you tell us:

“It cools perfectly all summer. The breaker only trips when we turn the heat on.”

That’s incredibly useful.

Now we’re very interested in the heating circuit.

Compare that with:

“It trips five seconds after the outdoor unit starts in cooling.”

Different story.

Or:

“It runs for twenty minutes and then trips.”

Different again.

Or:

“It trips instantly the moment I reset the breaker.”

Please stop resetting that one.

The sequence matters.

Then We Had the Halifax Plantation Call

Another homeowner in Halifax Plantation, Ormond Beach had a similar visible symptom.

Breaker tripping.

Except this time, we didn’t end up at an electric heat kit.

We ended up at the compressor.

That’s a considerably different conversation.

The compressor is the heart of the refrigeration circuit and one of the major electrical loads in an air-conditioning system.

When a compressor develops an electrical or mechanical problem that causes abnormal current draw or a fault condition, the breaker protecting that circuit may trip.

Again:

The breaker isn’t necessarily malfunctioning.

It may be doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.

Same Symptom. Completely Different Repair.

This is exactly why we’re building these Ride-Alongs around homeowner symptoms instead of component names.

Nobody needs to call us and say:

“I believe I have an electrical fault in my auxiliary resistance heat circuit.”

Please don’t.

Tell us:

“The breaker trips whenever the heat comes on.”

Perfect.

And you don’t need to tell us:

“I suspect my compressor is experiencing an abnormal electrical condition.”

Tell us:

“The outdoor AC breaker keeps tripping when the AC starts.”

Also perfect.

The symptom gets us started.

Then we determine why it’s happening.

Why Does a Breaker Trip?

In simple terms, the breaker is there to protect the electrical circuit.

If current becomes excessive or there’s a fault condition, the breaker opens the circuit.

Power stops flowing.

That’s intentional.

And that’s why repeatedly resetting a tripping breaker isn’t a repair.

You’re basically asking the protection device:

“Are you still concerned?”

Click.

“Yes.”

“How about now?”

Click.

“Still concerned.”

Maybe we should listen to it.

Should I Reset My AC Breaker?

If you discover that a breaker has tripped, a single reset may tell you whether the trip was an isolated event.

But if it trips again:

Stop.

Don’t keep resetting it.

Don’t hold it in position.

Don’t replace it with a larger breaker.

Don’t start experimenting.

Turn the system off and have the cause diagnosed.

A repeatedly tripping breaker is information.

We want that information intact when we arrive.

Other Reasons Your AC May Trip a Breaker

Our Ormond Beach calls involved a heat kit and a compressor.

Those are far from the only possibilities.

The compressor may have an electrical failure

This is one of the more serious possibilities.

A compressor can develop winding problems or short to ground.

Depending on the failure, the breaker may trip immediately when the compressor attempts to start.

This is something we can test.

We don’t diagnose:

“Breaker trips = bad compressor.”

We electrically test the compressor and determine what’s actually happening.

The compressor may be struggling to start

A compressor doesn’t necessarily have to be electrically shorted to create starting problems.

Electrical components associated with starting and running the compressor matter too.

Depending on the equipment, a failed capacitor or other starting issue may contribute to abnormal operation.

Again, we test the entire circuit rather than jumping straight to the most expensive component.

The electric heat kit may have a problem

That’s what we found on our Ormond Beach call.

Heat strips draw a lot of current when they’re operating.

A failed element, damaged wiring, electrical fault or other heat-kit problem can cause the breaker to trip.

And the homeowner may only discover it on the first cool morning of the year.

The AC worked beautifully all summer.

November arrives.

Heat comes on.

Click.

Welcome to heating season.

A motor may be failing

Blower motors and condenser fan motors are electrical loads too.

A failing motor can potentially draw abnormal current or develop an electrical fault.

That’s why we don’t stop at:

“Breaker tripped.”

We determine which circuit is affected and what was operating when it happened.

There may be damaged wiring

Loose connections.

Burned terminals.

Damaged insulation.

Shorted wiring.

Electrical problems don’t always originate inside one of the big expensive components.

Sometimes the wire carrying power to the component is the problem.

A connection may be overheating

Loose electrical connections create resistance.

Resistance creates heat.

Heat damages connections.

Now we can end up with burned terminals, damaged conductors and increasingly serious electrical problems.

This is one reason electrical connections are part of what we inspect.

The breaker itself could actually be bad

Yes.

Breakers can fail too.

But we don’t begin there simply because the breaker is the thing we can see tripping.

We first want to know whether the circuit is actually drawing excessive current or has another fault.

If the electrical load is normal and testing points toward the breaker itself, fine.

Then we have evidence.

But:

“Breaker keeps tripping, therefore bad breaker”

isn’t enough.

The wrong breaker may have been installed

Electrical protection has to be properly sized for the equipment and circuit.

Air-conditioning equipment has electrical requirements specified by the manufacturer.

If the protection isn’t appropriate for the equipment, that’s something we need to address.

And no, the solution to a breaker that keeps tripping is not:

“Put in a bigger one.”

Absolutely not.

The breaker isn’t an inconvenience we’re trying to overpower.

It’s part of the electrical protection system.

“It Only Trips When the Heat Comes On”

Tell us that.

That’s fantastic diagnostic information.

Especially in Florida, where electric heat may sit unused for much of the year.

If the AC cools normally for months and the breaker suddenly begins tripping the first time auxiliary heat operates, the timeline immediately gives us somewhere to start.

That’s exactly why we keep asking:

What is it doing—or not doing?

When did it start?

When exactly does it happen?

The sequence matters.

“It Trips as Soon as the Outside Unit Starts”

Also useful.

Now we’re interested in the outdoor circuit and the components operating on it.

Compressor.

Condenser fan.

Capacitor.

Wiring.

Contactor.

Electrical connections.

We still don’t know the answer.

But you’ve narrowed the investigation considerably without knowing a single HVAC term.

“It Runs for a While Before It Trips”

That’s different too.

A component that trips a breaker immediately may have a different failure than something that operates for twenty minutes, heats up and then causes a trip.

That’s why we want the complete story.

Don’t clean it up for us.

Tell us exactly what happens.

“The breaker trips.”

Useful.

“The AC starts normally, runs for about fifteen minutes, and then the outdoor breaker trips.”

Much more useful.

Don’t Let Anyone Diagnose the Compressor From the Breaker Alone

This is worth saying because we just had another Palm Coast Ride-Along involving a compressor diagnosis.

On that call, another company had told the homeowner the compressor was bad.

The homeowner called us for a replacement estimate.

We looked at the existing AC anyway.

The compressor wasn’t bad.

The contactor was.

That estimate became a service call.

On our Halifax Plantation breaker call, however, the compressor really was the problem.

That’s the point.

Sometimes it’s the compressor.

Sometimes it isn’t.

We don’t decide based on which answer produces the biggest repair.

We test it.

What We Check

A breaker-trip call becomes an electrical troubleshooting call.

Depending on the equipment and symptom, we may check things such as:

Which breaker is tripping.

What equipment that breaker serves.

What was operating when it tripped.

Voltage.

Current draw.

Electrical connections.

Capacitors.

Motors.

Compressor electrical condition.

Heat-strip operation.

Wiring.

Manufacturer electrical requirements.

And anything else the particular equipment and symptoms point us toward.

We’re trying to answer one question:

What electrical condition is causing this protection to open?

Once we know that, we can talk about the repair.

The Breaker Is the Symptom

That’s probably the biggest lesson from both of these Ormond Beach calls.

On one:

Breaker trips → investigate → heat-kit problem.

On another:

Breaker trips → investigate → compressor problem.

The breaker did the same thing.

The equipment didn’t have the same problem.

That’s exactly like a fever.

The thermometer tells you something is happening.

It doesn’t tell you why.

The tripped breaker gets our attention.

The troubleshooting gives us the diagnosis.

What This Means for You

If your AC keeps tripping a breaker, don’t worry about figuring out which component is bad.

Give us the observations.

What is it doing—or not doing?

“The AC stops and I find the breaker tripped.”

Great.

When did this start?

“Yesterday.”

Useful.

Which breaker is tripping?

“The outside AC breaker.”

Very useful.

When does it happen?

“Right when the outdoor unit starts.”

Extremely useful.

Or:

“It only happens when I turn the heat on.”

That’s a completely different clue.

On one Ormond Beach call, the problem was in the electric heat kit.

On another in Halifax Plantation, the compressor was the problem.

Same homeowner symptom.

Very different diagnoses.

And if the breaker trips again after being reset?

Leave it off.

The breaker isn’t ruining your afternoon for fun.

It’s trying to tell us something.

We’ll figure out what.

Because the tripped breaker is the symptom.

The symptom isn’t the diagnosis.
