Troubleshooting Ride-Along: Outside AC Fan Is Running — So Why Isn’t My House Cooling?

Location: St. Augustine, Florida
Complaint: AC is running, but the house isn’t cooling.

Today’s homeowner had already done the completely reasonable homeowner diagnostic:

Walk outside.

Look at AC.

Fan is spinning.

Okay.

Outdoor unit is running.

Except the house is getting hotter.

The thermostat is calling for cooling. Air is coming from the vents. The condenser fan outside is happily spinning away like absolutely nothing is wrong.

So why isn’t the house cooling?

Because the fan isn’t the whole outdoor unit.

There’s somebody considerably more important hiding underneath it.

The compressor.

And today, he’s not coming to work.

The St. Augustine Service Call

We arrive and start with the complaint.

System calling for cooling.

Indoor blower operating.

Outdoor condenser fan operating.

But the air coming from the vents isn’t getting cold.

Time to look closer at the outdoor unit.

You can learn a lot by standing next to a condenser and listening.

Normally, we’re hearing more than just the fan.

We’re also listening for the compressor.

On this system?

Fan: yes.

Compressor: nope.

Now we have something to troubleshoot.

“But the Outside Unit Is Running”

Sort of.

The condenser contains multiple components.

The fan you can see through the top is one of them.

The compressor is another.

And the compressor is the component actually responsible for pumping refrigerant through the refrigeration circuit.

If the fan runs but the compressor doesn’t, the outdoor unit can look perfectly alive from ten feet away.

Unfortunately, you’re not going to do much air conditioning with just the fan.

Otherwise we’d all be cooling our houses with box fans.

Don’t Condemn the Compressor Yet

The compressor isn’t running.

That does not automatically mean:

bad compressor.

We need to figure out why it isn’t running.

Is it receiving proper voltage?

Is the contactor energized?

Is the capacitor good?

Is the compressor on internal overload?

Are the windings intact?

Is it grounded?

Is something preventing it from starting?

The compressor is currently the symptom.

We still need the diagnosis.

Check the Capacitor

Power off.

Verify power is off.

Open the electrical compartment.

This system uses a dual-run capacitor serving both the condenser fan motor and compressor.

And here’s where this gets interesting.

One side of a dual capacitor can fail while the other side still works.

Which means:

the fan can run while the compressor doesn’t.

We tested the capacitor.

Fan side?

Still doing its job.

Compressor side?

Failed.

There it is.

That’s Why the Fan Fooled Everybody

From the driveway, the condenser looked like it was running.

Fan spinning.

Air moving.

Noise coming from the unit.

But electrically, the capacitor wasn’t properly supporting the compressor.

So the fan got to enjoy a lovely afternoon in St. Augustine while the compressor took the day off.

And inside the house?

Temperature climbing.

Replace the Failed Capacitor

We replaced the capacitor with the correct rated component.

Restore power.

Call for cooling.

Condenser fan starts.

And this time:

compressor starts too.

Now we keep testing.

Because finding one failed component doesn’t mean we close the cabinet and sprint to the truck.

We verify that the compressor is actually operating normally.

We check system operation.

We confirm the refrigeration circuit is doing what it’s supposed to do.

And finally:

Cold air again.

Could the Compressor Have Been Bad?

Absolutely.

If the capacitor had tested correctly and the compressor still refused to start, we’d keep going.

We could be dealing with:

  • electrical supply problem
  • damaged wiring
  • contactor issue
  • compressor internal overload
  • failed compressor windings
  • grounded compressor
  • mechanically locked compressor
  • another control or electrical problem

That’s why:

“The compressor isn’t running.”

and

“The compressor is bad.”

are not the same sentence.

There’s troubleshooting between those two statements.

Can I Tell Whether My Compressor Is Running?

Sometimes.

A running compressor has a distinct sound and vibration.

But if you don’t spend your life standing next to condensers—and we sincerely hope you don’t—it may be difficult to distinguish the compressor from the fan motor.

So homeowners usually look for the obvious thing:

Is the fan spinning?

That’s useful information.

Just remember:

It only tells us the fan is spinning.

The St. Augustine Verdict

Complaint: AC appears to be running but isn’t cooling.

Outdoor fan: Running.

Compressor: Not running.

What we found: Failed compressor side of the dual-run capacitor.

Repair: Replaced capacitor.

After repair: Compressor started normally and cooling operation was restored.

Compressor replacement required?

No.

Which is a considerably better ending than the homeowner was expecting.

The Bigger Lesson

Don’t diagnose an outdoor AC unit by whether the fan is spinning.

The fan can run while the compressor is completely out of the game.

And don’t go the opposite direction either:

Compressor isn’t running = compressor is dead.

Maybe.

But on this St. Augustine service call, the compressor wasn’t dead.

It just wasn’t getting the help it needed to start.

One capacitor later, everybody was back at work.

Including the compressor.
