Troubleshooting Ride-Along: Why Do My Lights Dim When the AC Turns On?

Location: Pine Lakes — Palm Coast, Florida
Complaint: Lights inside the house briefly dim every time the outdoor AC starts.

Today’s homeowner has discovered a new way to know exactly when their air conditioner turns on.

They don’t need to hear it.

They don’t need to look at the thermostat.

The living-room lights tell them.

Every time the outdoor unit starts:

lights dim.

Then they immediately return to normal.

The AC is still cooling.

No breakers are tripping.

But when your air conditioner briefly turns your living room into a haunted house every ten minutes, it’s probably worth investigating.

First: Make It Happen

We start the system.

Indoor blower comes on.

Outdoor unit starts.

And:

Yep.

The lights briefly dim.

Then everything returns to normal.

A tiny, barely perceptible flicker when a large electrical load starts isn’t necessarily evidence that your AC is dying.

But this homeowner says the dimming has become noticeably worse.

That’s important.

If something changed, we want to know why.

Starting a Compressor Takes Some Muscle

Your compressor uses considerably more current for the instant it starts than it does once it’s running.

That’s normal.

Think about pushing a stalled car.

Getting it moving takes the big shove.

Once it’s rolling, keeping it moving is considerably easier.

Your compressor has a similar problem.

So a brief voltage dip when a large compressor starts isn’t automatically abnormal.

But we still need to find out whether this compressor is starting the way it should.

Start With the Capacitor

Power off.

Verify power is off.

Open the condenser.

First stop:

capacitor.

The capacitor helps the compressor start and operate.

And because this is a Ride-Along and apparently capacitors enjoy making appearances in every Florida HVAC story eventually, we measure it.

Let’s say this system has a 45/5 µF dual capacitor.

Compressor side measures:

37.2 µF.

Well.

There’s something useful.

That’s outside the acceptable range.

Now we have a compressor attempting to start with a capacitor that isn’t doing its job properly.

But Don’t Stop There

It’s tempting.

Bad capacitor found.

Replace capacitor.

High five.

Lunch.

But the original complaint involves the electrical system of the house reacting when the compressor starts.

We want to know what the voltage is actually doing.

So we check supply voltage.

Then we watch voltage while the compressor starts.

We also inspect:

  • electrical connections
  • disconnect
  • contactor
  • wiring
  • compressor terminals
  • breaker
  • running amperage

Nothing else jumps out at us.

The weak capacitor remains our strongest evidence.

Replace It and Try Again

We replace the failed capacitor with the correct rated component.

Restore power.

Then we go back inside.

This is the fun part.

Thermostat calls.

Indoor blower starts.

Outdoor unit starts.

Everybody stares at the living-room lights like we’re waiting for a UFO.

Nothing.

Maybe the tiniest momentary change if you’re really looking for it.

But the dramatic dimming the homeowner had been seeing?

Gone.

Now we’re getting somewhere.

So Was the Compressor Bad?

No.

The compressor was having a harder time starting because the capacitor responsible for assisting it was failing.

Once we restored the proper capacitor, startup improved and the noticeable voltage dip disappeared.

That’s a considerably different diagnosis from:

“Your compressor is pulling too much power. You need a new AC.”

Could a failing compressor cause starting problems?

Absolutely.

That’s why we test.

But this one didn’t need a compressor.

What If the Capacitor Had Tested Good?

Then we keep going.

Lights dimming when the AC starts can involve more than the HVAC equipment itself.

We may need to investigate:

  • excessive compressor starting current
  • low incoming voltage
  • loose electrical connections
  • damaged wiring
  • breaker issues
  • service or panel problems
  • utility-side voltage problems
  • compressor mechanical problems

And at some point, the correct answer may be:

This isn’t an HVAC problem anymore. We need an electrician or the utility involved.

Knowing where our equipment stops being the problem is part of troubleshooting too.

What About a Hard-Start Kit?

Could one help?

Sometimes.

A properly selected hard-start device can help certain compressors start more effectively.

But:

lights dim = install hard start

isn’t a diagnosis.

Before adding anything, we’d rather understand why the compressor is struggling.

In this case we already had an obvious failed component.

Fix that first.

Then reevaluate.

The Pine Lakes Verdict

Complaint: House lights noticeably dim whenever the outdoor AC starts.

What we found: Compressor-side capacitor measuring significantly below its rated capacitance.

Repair: Replaced failed capacitor.

After repair: Compressor started normally and the noticeable light dimming disappeared.

Compressor replacement required?

Nope.

Electrical-panel replacement required?

Nope.

Exorcist required?

Also nope.

The Bigger Lesson

A slight flicker when a large electrical load starts isn’t automatically an emergency.

But if your lights suddenly start dimming much more than they used to, something changed.

That’s the clue.

Don’t diagnose the compressor from the living room.

And don’t automatically throw a hard-start kit at it either.

Measure the capacitor.

Measure voltage.

Check startup.

Inspect the electrical system.

Then follow what the numbers tell you.

On this Pine Lakes service call, the homeowner noticed the symptom before the air conditioner actually stopped cooling.

And that little flicker in the living room led us directly toward a capacitor that was already on its way out.

Sometimes your AC tells you there’s a problem.

Sometimes it tells your lamps first.
