Troubleshooting Ride-Along: My AC Started Making a Weird Noise After It Was Repaired

Complaint: Outdoor AC started making a strange noise immediately after a recent repair.

And technically?
It worked.

“What was just worked on?”

Open the Condenser
We shut the system down, disconnected power and opened the electrical compartment.
The replacement capacitor was there.
Now we wanted to verify the installation.
Correct capacitor?
Correct capacitance ratings?
Connections tight?
Wiring where it belongs?

And that’s where we found the problem.

This Is Why Timing Matters
One of the most useful things a homeowner can tell us is:
“It started right after…”
Right after the capacitor was replaced.
Right after the thermostat was changed.
Right after maintenance.
Right after the power went out.
Right after a lightning storm.
Right after somebody worked in the attic.
Right after the roof was replaced.
Right after another HVAC repair.
That doesn’t prove those things caused the problem.
But it gives us somewhere intelligent to start.
Don’t Immediately Assume the Previous Tech Screwed Up
This is worth saying.
Sometimes we arrive after another company has worked on a system and find something completely unrelated.
Coincidences happen.
A ten-year-old AC can have a capacitor replaced Monday and lose a blower motor Wednesday.
That doesn’t mean the capacitor replacement killed the blower.
So we’re not showing up looking for evidence that:
“The last guy screwed this up.”
We’re looking for evidence of what’s wrong now.
Sometimes those are the same thing.
Sometimes they’re not.
Why We Verify Repairs
Whenever we replace a component, the job isn’t finished when the new part is installed.
The system needs to run.
We verify operation.
Because the final step of a repair should always be:
Did we actually fix the original problem?
And:
Is the system operating normally now?
If we replaced your capacitor because the outdoor unit wouldn’t start, we don’t install the capacitor and drive away.
We start the AC.
We watch it operate.
We verify the repair.
That last step catches a lot of problems.
