Troubleshooting Ride-Along: The Thermostat Is On, but the A/C Won’t Start

The thermostat is on.

It says COOL.

It’s set below the room temperature.

But the A/C?

Nothing.

No air from the vents. No outdoor unit. No cooling.

So what do you replace?

Nothing yet.

Welcome to another Troubleshooting Ride-Along.

The Call

We arrived at a home in Palm Coast with a pretty straightforward complaint:

“The thermostat is working, but the A/C won’t come on.”

The thermostat display was lit and appeared completely normal.

That immediately gives us useful information—but it does not prove the thermostat is actually sending the correct signal to the equipment.

And it definitely doesn’t tell us which part is bad.

So we started at the beginning.

Step 1: Is the Thermostat Actually Calling for Cooling?

The thermostat was set to COOL and the room temperature was above the setpoint.

Next question:

Is it actually sending a cooling call?

We verified the thermostat output.

It was.

So we now had a thermostat asking for cooling and an HVAC system ignoring it.

Progress.

Step 2: Is the Air Handler Getting the Signal?

Now we follow the call.

At the air handler, we verified incoming power and checked the low-voltage control circuit.

Power was present.

The cooling call was present.

But the system still wasn’t operating.

That means we keep moving through the circuit.

This is why:

“My thermostat is on.”

isn’t a diagnosis.

The thermostat is only one part of the conversation.

We need to find out where the conversation stopped.

Step 3: Check the Safeties

One of the first things we look at on a Florida A/C system that suddenly won’t operate is the condensate safety circuit.

Why?

Because your A/C makes water.

A lot of water.

And if that water stops draining properly, a float switch may intentionally shut the system down before it introduces several gallons of condensate to your ceiling.

We checked the float switch.

There it was.

The switch was open.

The system wasn’t broken.

The system had been told not to run.

Step 4: Why Was the Float Switch Open?

Now we’re not done.

You don’t bypass the float switch, announce victory and leave.

Because the float switch wasn’t the problem.

The water was.

We checked the condensate drain and found it restricted.

Condensate had backed up enough to activate the safety switch and interrupt the control circuit.

Exactly what it was supposed to do.

So the homeowner’s:

“My thermostat is on but my A/C won’t start.”

was actually:

“My drain is backing up and my A/C shut itself off before the water ended up somewhere expensive.”

Much better problem to have.

The Repair

We cleared the condensate drain and removed the accumulated water.

Then we tested the drain with water to make sure it was actually flowing properly.

Not:

“Well, we sucked something out of it.”

Actually tested it.

Once the water level dropped, the float switch reset and the control circuit closed again.

Cooling call restored.

Blower running.

Outdoor unit running.

Cold air.

A/C back in business.

But It Could Have Been Something Else

That’s the important part of this Ride-Along.

A thermostat that’s on while the A/C refuses to start can be caused by plenty of things.

It could be:

  • a float switch
  • loss of power to part of the system
  • a control-voltage problem
  • failed transformer
  • damaged thermostat wiring
  • control board problem
  • contactor problem
  • motor failure
  • compressor/start-component problem
  • another safety or control preventing operation

That’s why we don’t diagnose:

“A/C won’t start”

with a parts catalog.

We follow the circuit.

What If the Thermostat Is Blank Too?

That’s a different symptom.

If the thermostat itself suddenly goes completely blank, now loss of low-voltage power moves much higher on our list.

We’ve had those calls too.

But this homeowner still had a perfectly normal-looking thermostat.

The equipment simply wasn’t responding.

That distinction matters.

The Lesson

If your thermostat is on, calling for cooling and your A/C won’t start:

Don’t assume the thermostat is bad.

And don’t assume the compressor is dead either.

The thermostat tells the system what you want.

There are still a whole bunch of things between:

“Please cool my house.”

and

“Yes, boss.”

Our job is to follow that signal until we find where it stops.

On this call?

It stopped at a float switch.

And that little switch wasn’t malfunctioning at all.

It was the only thing standing between a clogged drain and a much more annoying Ride-Along involving drywall.
