My AC Guy Says Closing Vents Will Save Me Money
Your AC guy says:
“Close the vents in rooms you aren’t using. It’ll save electricity.”
That sounds logical.
You’re cooling fewer rooms.
So the AC should do less work.
Right?
Not exactly.
Your central air conditioner doesn’t know you closed the guest-bedroom vent.
It’s still trying to move air through the duct system.
What Happens When You Close a Vent?
Closing a supply register doesn’t necessarily reduce how much air the blower is trying to move.
Instead, you’re adding restriction to the duct system.
That can increase static pressure and reduce airflow.
Now we’ve taken an HVAC system designed to move a certain amount of air and started closing some of its exits.
Think:
Blower still blowing. Fewer places for the air to go.
That’s not automatically an efficiency improvement.
Can I Close One Vent?
We’re not saying your AC will explode because Grandma got cold and closed the register in the guest room.

One partially closed register isn’t the same thing as shutting half the house down.
The problem is treating a central HVAC system like a true zoned system:
“Nobody uses these three bedrooms, so let’s close every vent and save 30%.”
That’s not how it works.
What About Rooms That Get Too Cold?
That’s a different problem.
If one bedroom is freezing while another is hot, we should look at air distribution.
Maybe the system needs balancing.
Maybe there’s a duct problem.
Maybe the room has too much or too little airflow.
Adjusting registers can sometimes be part of balancing a system.
That’s different from randomly closing a bunch of vents to reduce the electric bill.
Why Doesn’t My AC Just Work Less?
Most traditional residential systems don’t automatically reduce their capacity because you closed three registers.
The equipment still operates.
The blower still operates.
The refrigeration system still operates.
You’ve simply changed the airflow conditions it’s operating under.
Variable-capacity and properly designed zoned systems can manage changing loads much more intelligently.
But that’s because the system was designed to do it.
Closing bedroom vents isn’t homemade zoning.
What Should You Do Instead?
If you’re trying to lower your cooling costs, we’d rather look at things that actually affect the home’s cooling load and HVAC performance:
- reasonable thermostat settings
- clean filters
- proper airflow
- duct leakage
- insulation and air sealing
- equipment condition
- humidity control
And if you genuinely want different temperatures in different areas?
Let’s talk about actual zoning, not ductwork whack-a-mole.

Closing vents isn’t zoning.
