My AC Guy Says I Need Refrigerant Every Year. Is That Normal?

No.

If your air conditioner needs refrigerant every year, something is wrong.

Your AC does not burn refrigerant, consume it, or normally need a seasonal “top-off.”

It’s a sealed refrigeration system.

So if somebody added refrigerant last summer and you’re low again this summer:

Where did it go?

Most Likely? You Have a Leak.

Refrigerant can leak from places like:

  • evaporator coil
  • condenser coil
  • refrigerant lines
  • fittings and joints
  • service valves
  • other components in the refrigeration circuit

Some leaks are easy to find.

Others are tiny, intermittent, buried underground, hidden inside walls—or seven stories down a building shaft because apparently we weren’t busy enough that Monday.

But repeatedly adding refrigerant doesn’t repair any of them.

Even EPA’s homeowner guidance recommends asking technicians to locate and repair leaks rather than repeatedly topping off leaking systems.

“But Adding Refrigerant Makes It Work Again.”

It probably does.

If the system is undercharged because refrigerant leaked out, adding refrigerant may restore cooling.

Until enough leaks out again.

Then you’re right back where you started.

So we’re not saying refrigerant should never be added to a leaking system. There are situations where a homeowner may knowingly choose a temporary repair or recharge.

We just want you to understand what you’re buying:

Refrigerant isn’t fixing the leak.

What Should You Ask?

If this isn’t the first time your system has needed refrigerant, ask:

“Have we looked for the leak?”

Then decide what makes financial sense.

Maybe we find and repair it.

Maybe the leaking component is expensive and the age of the system makes replacement the better investment.

Maybe you knowingly choose to recharge it temporarily.

Those are all conversations we can have.

Let’s figure out why it was low.

Again next year?

Now we’ve established a pattern.

At that point, we’d rather spend our time finding where the refrigerant is escaping than turn your air conditioner into an annual refrigerant subscription.

Your AC doesn’t drink Freon every summer.
