My AC Guy Says My R-22 System Can’t Be Repaired Anymore

Your AC guy says:

“It’s R-22. We can’t repair those anymore.”

That’s not quite right.

R-22 was phased out of new production and import in the United States.

But existing R-22 air conditioners did not become illegal to repair.

In fact, the EPA specifically says existing R-22 equipment can continue to be serviced—including replacement of failed components.

Can You Still Get R-22?

Yes.

Newly produced R-22 is no longer manufactured or imported into the United States.

But reclaimed, recycled and previously produced R-22 can still be used to service existing equipment.

So:

“They don’t make new R-22 anymore.”

True.

“Nobody is allowed to put R-22 in your existing AC.”

Not true.

Then Why Do Companies Recommend Replacement?

Because there’s another question entirely:

Does repairing this old R-22 system make financial sense?

That’s where we may completely agree with your AC guy.

Most residential R-22 systems are getting pretty old.

If yours needs:

A capacitor?

We might fix the capacitor.

If it needs:

A major leak repair + several pounds of R-22 + another expensive component?

Now we need to talk.

The refrigerant can be expensive.

Parts may be harder to find.

And after spending thousands of dollars, you still own an old R-22 air conditioner.

That’s a legitimate reason to recommend replacement.

“Can’t Repair” and “Shouldn’t Repair” Are Different

This distinction matters.

Sometimes we can absolutely repair an old R-22 system.

We just don’t think you should spend the money.

If you’ve got a 1996 R-22 system with no refrigerant left and we’re looking at a leak search, leak repair, evacuation and a full recharge?

Technically:

We may be able to repair it.

Financially:

We may strongly recommend that you don’t.

Those aren’t contradictory statements.

What Should You Ask?

Ask:

“Is repairing my R-22 system illegal or impossible—or are you saying replacement makes more financial sense?”

Because those are very different answers.

Your R-22 air conditioner didn’t become legally unrepairable when R-22 production ended.

Existing systems can still be serviced.

But that doesn’t mean repairing every old R-22 system is a good investment.

Sometimes:

Fix it.

Sometimes:

You can fix it, but we wouldn’t.

And sometimes that 30-year-old R-22 system has fought enough battles.
