My AC Guy Says My Delta-T Is Too Low

Your AC guy says:

“Your Delta-T is too low.”

That may be completely true.

But before we decide what’s wrong with the AC:

What was the Delta-T, and where was it measured?

What Is Delta-T?

Delta-T is simply a temperature difference.

In cooling, we’re usually talking about the difference between the air entering the evaporator coil and the air leaving it.

For example:

Return air: 76°F
Supply air: 58°F

That’s an:

18°F Delta-T.

You’ll often hear HVAC technicians looking for something around 16–22°F, but that’s a general range—not a magic pass/fail number.

Actual temperature split depends on the conditions the system is operating under.

What If My Delta-T Is Only 10 Degrees?

Then we investigate.

A low temperature split can be associated with several different things, including:

  • refrigerant problems
  • excessive airflow
  • equipment capacity problems
  • compressor problems
  • unusually high indoor humidity
  • measurement location
  • other system conditions

That’s why:

“Your Delta-T is 10 degrees.”

is useful information.

But:

“Your Delta-T is 10 degrees, therefore you need refrigerant.”

requires more evidence.

Humidity Matters

This one is especially important in Florida.

Your evaporator coil removes both:

Heat

and

moisture.

When the indoor air is extremely humid, more of the system’s capacity may initially be going toward moisture removal.

That can affect the temperature difference we’re measuring.

So a lower-than-expected Delta-T doesn’t automatically mean:

The AC isn’t working.

We need the rest of the picture.

Where Did You Measure It?

This matters too.

Taking a temperature at the return grille in the hallway and another at the supply register across the house isn’t necessarily the same as measuring air conditions directly entering and leaving the equipment.

Duct heat gain.

Duct leakage.

Attic conditions.

Measurement location.

All of those can influence the numbers.

If we’re using Delta-T diagnostically, we’d like to know exactly what temperatures we’re comparing.

Can Delta-T Diagnose Refrigerant Charge?

Not by itself.

A low Delta-T may give us a reason to investigate the refrigeration system.

Then we look at:

Superheat.
Subcooling.
Pressures.
Airflow.
Indoor conditions.
Outdoor conditions.

Now we’re diagnosing.

Delta-T is one piece of evidence.

Not the entire trial.

What Should You Ask?

Ask:

“What was my return temperature and supply temperature?”

Then:

“What do you think is causing the low temperature split?”

If your technician has additional measurements supporting the diagnosis?

Great.

The Klein Answer

Your AC guy may be absolutely right that your Delta-T is lower than expected.

That’s useful information.

But Delta-T tells us:

Something deserves investigation.

It doesn’t automatically tell us what part to replace.

Measure the temperature split.

Look at humidity and airflow.

Look at the refrigeration system.

Then put all the evidence together.

Because:

“Your Delta-T is low.”

is a measurement.

“Therefore your TXV is bad.”

is a diagnosis.

There’s supposed to be some troubleshooting between those two sentences.
