The AC Company Says My Ducts Are Undersized. How Do They Know?
“Your ducts are too small.” That statement may be correct. But how did the technician arrive at it?
What undersized ducts can do
Restricted duct systems can reduce airflow, raise static pressure, increase noise, compromise comfort, and contribute to equipment problems. Supply and return restrictions don’t always show up the same way.
What should be checked?
A useful evaluation considers equipment airflow requirements, the blower’s performance data, total external static pressure measured at appropriate points, filter and coil conditions, return paths, duct layout, fittings, and available duct capacity. A proper duct design may also require calculations and inspection of individual branches.
Does high static pressure prove every duct needs replacing?
No. A restrictive filter, undersized return grille, sharp transition, blocked branch, or dirty coil can contribute. The contractor must identify where the restriction is before recommending a solution.
Can one return make a difference?
Sometimes. Klein Cooling has performed jobs adding return-air capacity and modifying duct systems rather than simply treating the entire distribution system as disposable. Whether that approach works depends on the actual layout and measurements.
What should the homeowner ask?
Ask for the measured pressures, where the readings were taken, the equipment’s allowable range, and the specific changes proposed. If the recommendation is full replacement, ask why selective correction is insufficient.
Florida homes deserve a measured answer
In Palm Coast, Bunnell, Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach and St. Augustine, attic access, ductboard plenums, flexible ducts and humidity all affect the evaluation. The answer should come from your home, not a generic sales script.
