My AC Guy Says My TXV Is Bad. How Do I Know?
Your AC guy says the TXV is bad.
Could be.
TXVs fail.
But before replacing one, we’d want to see the evidence—because “bad TXV” can look a lot like several other AC problems.
What Does the TXV Actually Do?
The TXV—or thermostatic expansion valve—is the metering device that controls how much refrigerant enters the evaporator coil.
When it’s working properly, it helps maintain the correct amount of refrigerant feeding that coil as conditions change.
When it isn’t?
You can have poor cooling, abnormal refrigerant pressures, improper superheat, freezing and other symptoms.
The problem is:
Those symptoms don’t belong exclusively to a bad TXV.
What Else Can Look Like a Bad TXV?
Before condemning the valve, we’d want to rule out things like:
- incorrect refrigerant charge
- poor airflow
- dirty filter or evaporator coil
- blower problems
- refrigerant restriction
- filter-drier restriction
- improperly installed or insulated TXV sensing bulb
- other refrigeration-system problems
That’s why simply connecting gauges and seeing weird pressures isn’t enough.
We need to understand why the pressures are weird.
How Do You Actually Test It?
This is where measurements matter.
We’d look at the entire refrigeration picture, including:
Superheat.
Subcooling.
Suction pressure.
Liquid pressure.
Airflow.
Temperatures.
Then we’d see how the system responds when conditions change.
If the evidence shows that the TXV isn’t properly controlling refrigerant flow after we’ve ruled out the other possibilities?
Okay.
Now we can have a TXV conversation.
What Should You Ask?
If you’re being quoted a TXV replacement, ask:
“What readings showed you that the TXV is bad?”
There should be an explanation beyond:
“The pressures look like a TXV.”
Maybe your technician has excellent evidence and the diagnosis is completely correct.
Great.
But replacing a TXV can involve recovering refrigerant, opening the sealed refrigeration system, brazing, pressure testing, evacuation and recharging.
It’s not a part we want to replace experimentally.

But we’d want to prove it before replacing it.
Because a TXV is one of those components that can become the HVAC version of:
“We don’t really know what’s wrong, but this seems expensive enough to try.”
Sometimes it’s the TXV.

Measure first. Blame the TXV second.
