My AC Guy Says 76°F Can Feel Better Than 72°F if the Humidity Is Lower

Your AC guy says:

“You might actually be more comfortable at 76°F with lower humidity than you are at 72°F with high humidity.”

Sounds like something somebody says when they don’t want to make your house colder.

😂

But:

He’s right.

Temperature is only part of what determines whether your house feels comfortable.

Humidity matters too.

Why Does Humidity Change How Temperature Feels?

Your body cools itself partly through evaporation.

When the air contains a lot of moisture, evaporation becomes less effective.

That’s why a humid Florida afternoon feels so much worse than the same temperature in a dry climate.

The same principle matters inside your house.

Consider:

72°F at 65% relative humidity

versus

76°F at 45–50% relative humidity.

The second house may feel considerably more comfortable even though the thermostat shows a higher temperature.

This Is Why “Just Turn It Down” Doesn’t Always Work

Your house feels sticky.

So you lower the thermostat.

74°F.

Still sticky.

72°F.

Now it’s cold…

and somehow still sticky.

That’s because temperature and humidity aren’t the same problem.

If the real problem is excessive indoor moisture, lowering the thermostat may simply give you:

a colder humid house.

That’s not exactly the goal.

Your AC Is Also a Dehumidifier

While your air conditioner cools, moisture condenses on the evaporator coil and drains outside.

So the AC is doing two jobs:

Removing sensible heat — lowering temperature.

and

Removing latent heat — removing moisture.

Good comfort requires both.

This is one reason equipment sizing, airflow and runtime matter so much in Florida.

What Humidity Should I Have?

There’s no single perfect number for every person and every house.

But generally, we’d like to keep indoor relative humidity below 60%, and many Florida homeowners find something around 45–55% comfortable.

If you’re consistently seeing:

60%.
65%.
70%.

while the AC is operating?

That’s worth investigating.

What Causes High Indoor Humidity?

Lots of things can contribute:

  • oversized AC equipment
  • short cooling cycles
  • incorrect airflow
  • continuous blower operation
  • duct leakage
  • outside-air infiltration
  • building-envelope problems
  • doors or windows frequently open
  • unusually high moisture loads
  • equipment or control problems

And sometimes the cooling system simply can’t provide enough dehumidification for the particular house.

That’s where dedicated dehumidification may make sense.

Don’t Chase the Thermostat

We’ve seen homes where the homeowner keeps lowering the thermostat trying to become comfortable.

The temperature gets colder.

The humidity stays high.

And everybody wonders why:

72°F somehow feels terrible.

Fix the moisture problem and suddenly:

75°F or 76°F feels great.

That’s also potentially easier on the AC and your electric bill than trying to maintain meat-locker temperatures all summer.

What Should You Ask?

If the house feels uncomfortable even though the thermostat temperature looks good, ask:

“What’s my indoor humidity?”

Most modern thermostats can display it.

A separate hygrometer can too.

That little percentage beside the temperature can explain a lot.

Yes. 76°F can absolutely feel better than 72°F.

If the 76-degree house has properly controlled humidity and the 72-degree house is sitting at 65% RH, we’d probably choose the 76-degree house too.

Comfort isn’t just:

TEMPERATURE.

It’s temperature and moisture.

So before you keep lowering the thermostat because the house feels sticky:

Look at the humidity.

Because sometimes you don’t need colder air.

You need drier air.
