My AC Guy Says My AC Can Only Cool About 20 Degrees Below Outside
Your AC guy says:
“It’s 95°F outside and you’re maintaining 75°F inside. The system is doing what it’s supposed to do.”
He may be right.
You’ll hear 20 degrees mentioned a lot in air conditioning.
The confusing part is that HVAC people can be talking about two different temperature differences.
There’s the Temperature Split Across the AC
One measurement we commonly take is the difference between the air entering the cooling equipment and the air leaving it.
For example:
Return air: 76°F
Supply air: 57°F
That’s a 19°F Delta-T.
That measurement can tell us useful things about how the system is operating, although Delta-T alone doesn’t diagnose an AC.
But that’s not necessarily what your technician means when he says your AC is maintaining about 20 degrees below outside.
Then There’s Outside Temperature vs. Inside Temperature
On extremely hot days, some manufacturers and contractors use roughly a 20°F indoor-to-outdoor difference as a reasonable performance expectation for residential air conditioning.
So if it’s:
96°F outside
and your house is maintaining:
75–76°F
that does not automatically mean something is wrong with your AC.
The system may be running continuously because the house is experiencing a very high cooling load.
That’s an important distinction.
But 20 Degrees Isn’t a Brick Wall
This is where the rule gets oversimplified.
It doesn’t mean your thermostat physically cannot go below:
Outdoor temperature minus 20.
Plenty of properly designed systems maintain indoor temperatures more than 20°F below outdoor conditions.
If it’s 95°F outside and your house is 72°F?
Great.
Your AC hasn’t broken any laws.
The actual indoor temperature a system can maintain depends on the equipment and the cooling load of the house.
That includes things like:
- equipment sizing
- insulation
- windows
- air leakage
- duct leakage
- solar exposure
- indoor humidity
- occupancy
- outdoor conditions
So the 20-degree idea can be a useful rule of thumb or expectation.
It isn’t a universal maximum.
What If My House Won’t Get Below 78°F?
Then context matters.
If it’s an exceptionally hot afternoon and the AC is maintaining roughly a 20-degree difference from outdoors, your technician may determine that the equipment itself is operating normally.
But we’d still want to look at the system.
Check airflow.
Check temperatures.
Check refrigeration performance.
Check ductwork.
And determine whether the equipment is actually producing the cooling capacity it should.
Because:
“It’s hot outside.”
shouldn’t become an excuse to stop troubleshooting an AC that’s actually broken.
What Should You Ask?
Ask:
“Do you mean the system itself is testing normally and the house has reached its cooling capacity under today’s conditions?”
That’s considerably more useful than arguing about whether an air conditioner is allowed to exceed some magical 20-degree number.
The Klein Answer
If it’s brutally hot outside and your AC is maintaining the house about 20°F cooler than outdoors, your technician may be completely correct that the system is performing reasonably under those conditions.
But 20°F isn’t an invisible wall your thermostat can’t cross.
Your AC may maintain a larger difference.
The real question is:
Is the equipment operating correctly, and can it handle the cooling load of the house under the current conditions?
Measure that.
Because there are actually two different HVAC conversations involving “20 degrees.”
And somehow we decided to call both of them:
The 20-degree rule.
That wasn’t particularly helpful.
