My AC Guy Says I Should Leave My Fan Set to AUTO Instead of ON

Your AC guy says:

“Leave the thermostat fan set to AUTO, not ON.”

For most Florida homes?

Yep. We’d agree.

And the reason isn’t just electricity.

It’s humidity.

What’s the Difference?

With the thermostat fan set to AUTO, the indoor blower normally runs when the system is actively cooling.

When the cooling cycle ends, the blower shuts off.

Set it to ON and the blower runs continuously—even when the outdoor unit isn’t cooling.

That sounds harmless.

You might even think:

“Constant circulation has to be better, right?”

Not necessarily.

Your Evaporator Coil Gets Wet

While your AC is cooling, warm humid air passes across the cold evaporator coil.

Moisture condenses on that coil and drains away.

That’s one of the ways your air conditioner dehumidifies your house.

When the cooling cycle ends?

That coil is still wet.

Now imagine leaving the blower running across it.

Some of that remaining moisture can evaporate back into the air and get carried right back into the house.

Which is pretty much the opposite of what we’re trying to accomplish in Florida.

But Doesn’t ON Circulate the Air Better?

Yes.

Continuous fan operation can provide more constant air circulation and filtration.

There may be specific systems, applications or homeowner needs where continuous circulation is intentional.

But there’s a tradeoff.

In a humid climate, we’re particularly interested in getting moisture out of the house and keeping it out.

That’s why we generally don’t recommend leaving a conventional AC blower running continuously just for the sake of circulation.

What About Variable-Speed Equipment?

Different equipment can behave differently.

Modern communicating and variable-speed systems may intentionally operate the blower at various speeds for circulation, humidity control or other programmed functions.

That’s not necessarily the same thing as taking a conventional thermostat and manually switching:

FAN: ON

and leaving it there forever.

Follow the control strategy the equipment was designed to use.

“My House Feels More Humid With the Fan ON.”

It very well might.

And this is one of the first thermostat settings we’d check.

Before we start discussing dehumidifiers, new equipment or major modifications, let’s make sure we’re not removing moisture during every cooling cycle and then helping some of it get back into the house afterward.

What Should You Set It To?

For a typical Florida residential system:

AUTO is generally where we’d start.

Let the blower operate with the cooling cycle.

Let the condensate drain away.

Then let the blower stop.

Yep. We’re with him on this one.

Continuous blower operation can improve circulation, but in Florida it may work against humidity control by re-evaporating moisture left on the evaporator coil after cooling.

So unless there’s a specific reason your system is designed or configured to operate differently:

COOL: Whatever keeps your marriage intact.

FAN: AUTO.
