My AC Guy Says I Need a Bigger AC
Your AC guy says:
“You need a bigger system.”
Maybe.
But before adding another half-ton or ton of cooling capacity, we’d like to know:
Why?
Because when it comes to air conditioning:
Bigger isn’t automatically better.
“But My AC Runs All Day”
That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s undersized.
On a really hot Florida afternoon, a properly sized air conditioner can have very long runtimes.
If the house isn’t maintaining temperature, we need to figure out why.
Maybe the AC actually is undersized.
But it could also be:
- poor airflow
- leaking or damaged ductwork
- insufficient return air
- incorrect refrigerant charge
- dirty equipment
- equipment not producing its rated capacity
- insulation or building-envelope problems
Putting a bigger AC on top of one of those problems doesn’t necessarily fix it.
What Happens If We Go Too Big?
This is the part nobody wants to discover after buying the new system.
An oversized AC can cool the house very quickly.
Great!
Then it shuts off.
Then starts again.
Then shuts off.
Those shorter cooling cycles can hurt humidity removal.
So now your thermostat says:
72°F
while your house feels like:
72°F and swampy.
We’ve seen exactly that.
A Palm Coast homeowner had been “upgraded” to a 4-ton system.
The house had plenty of cooling.
What it didn’t have was good humidity control.
How Should AC Size Be Determined?
Not by:
“You’ve got a 3-ton now, so let’s give you a 4-ton.”
And definitely not:
“Bigger will cool better.”
Equipment should be sized to the actual cooling requirements of the home.
That means considering the house itself—not just square footage or whatever equipment happens to be sitting there now.
What Should You Ask?
Ask:
“Why do you think I need a bigger system?”
Then:
“Was a load calculation performed?”
If there’s evidence that your house actually needs additional capacity?
Great.
Let’s talk about it.
But increasing tonnage shouldn’t be treated like upgrading from a V6 to a V8.

Yes, your existing AC could be undersized.
But don’t increase tonnage just because the old system struggles to cool.
First figure out why it struggles.
Then determine what capacity the house actually needs.
Because too small is a problem.
Too big is also a problem.
And in Florida, we’d much rather size the air conditioner correctly the first time than explain why your brand-new “upgrade” turned your house into a refrigerated swamp.
