My AC Guy Says My Static Pressure Is Too High
Your AC guy says:
“Your static pressure is too high.”
Okay.
This one’s actually pretty easy to verify.
Ask:
“What did it measure?”
Because static pressure isn’t an opinion.
We can measure it.
What Is Static Pressure?
Think of static pressure as the resistance your blower is working against while trying to move air through the HVAC system.
The blower has to push air through things like:
- return ductwork
- filters
- evaporator coil
- supply ductwork
- registers and grilles
Every one of those creates some resistance.
Too much resistance?
Now the blower is trying to move air through a system that doesn’t want to let it.
What’s Considered “Too High”?
This is where we don’t love universal answers.
You’ll often hear:
“.5 inches of static is the maximum.”
Maybe.
Many residential air handlers and furnaces are rated around 0.5 inches of water column, but not every piece of equipment has the same allowable external static pressure.
Some are different.
So we want two numbers:
What did your system measure?
and
What does the manufacturer say the equipment is designed for?
That’s considerably more useful than:
“Your static seems high.”
What Causes High Static Pressure?
Now comes the important part.
Finding high static pressure isn’t the end of the diagnosis.
It’s the beginning.
We need to figure out why.
Possibilities include:
- undersized return ductwork
- undersized supply ductwork
- restrictive filter
- dirty filter
- dirty evaporator coil
- collapsed or damaged flex duct
- restrictive grilles
- undersized plenums
- poor duct design
- incorrect blower setup
That’s why the next question after:
“Your static is high.”
should be:
“Where is the restriction?”
Why Does It Matter?
Airflow affects nearly everything the system does.
If the blower can’t move the airflow the equipment needs, we can see problems with:
Comfort.
Capacity.
Temperature split.
Humidity.
Refrigeration readings.
Equipment operation.
And depending on the equipment and conditions, poor airflow can contribute to coil freezing or equipment stress.
So high static isn’t some obscure number HVAC nerds measure because we enjoy poking holes in ductwork.
It can tell us something important about how the system is actually breathing.
What Should You Ask?
Two questions:
“What was the total external static pressure?”
and:
“What is my equipment rated for?”
Then:
“Where is the restriction?”
If your technician can show you those measurements and explain what’s causing them?
Yep. Your AC guy has evidence.

High static pressure is a real HVAC problem.
And unlike:
“Your ductwork looks a little small…”
we can actually measure it.
But the number alone doesn’t tell us what to replace.
First measure the static.
Compare it with the equipment specifications.
Then isolate where the restriction is occurring.
Because:
“Your static pressure is high.”
is useful information.
“Therefore you need $8,000 worth of ductwork.”
requires a few more steps.
