My AC Guy Says My Capacitor Is Weak
Your AC guy says:
“Your capacitor is getting weak.”
Okay.
This one is pretty easy:
What did it measure?
Because unlike a lot of HVAC diagnoses, a capacitor literally has a number printed on the side telling us what it’s supposed to be.
What Does “Weak” Mean?
HVAC capacitors are rated in microfarads, usually written as µF or MFD.
You might have a dual capacitor labeled:
45/5 µF
That means one side is rated at 45 µF and the other at 5 µF.
The capacitor will also have an allowable tolerance printed on it—commonly something like ±5% or ±6%, depending on the capacitor.
Then we measure it.
That’s the fun part.
Show Me the Number
Let’s say you’ve got a capacitor rated:
45 µF ±5%
Five percent of 45 is 2.25.
So its acceptable range is approximately:
42.75–47.25 µF
If we measure:
44.3 µF
That’s not “weak.”
It’s within its rated tolerance.
If we measure:
37 µF?
Okay.
Now we have something to talk about.
It’s below its rated specification.
No vibes required.
“But It’s Still Working.”
It may be.
A capacitor can test outside its specified range while the compressor or motor is still operating.
That doesn’t mean we wait until the AC quits at 4:30 PM on a Saturday in August before we’re allowed to mention it.
If it’s outside its rated tolerance, recommending replacement can be completely reasonable.
The important thing is that we should be able to show you why.
What Should You Ask?
This may be the easiest question in the entire My AC Guy Says series:
“What did it measure?”
Then look at what it’s rated for.
That’s it.
If it’s rated 45 µF and measures 44?
We’re going to have a difficult time selling you on how dangerously “weak” it is.
If it’s rated 45 and measures 35?
Yep. Your AC guy has a point.
The Klein Answer
A capacitor really can become weak as it deteriorates.
But “weak” should have a number attached to it.
Rated:
45 µF ±5%.
Measured:
36.8 µF.
Perfect.
Now the homeowner can actually see why we’re recommending replacement.
Because this isn’t one of those HVAC diagnoses that requires you to blindly trust the wizard standing beside the condenser.
The number is printed right on the can.
Measure it.
Compare it.
Done.
