Why Won’t an HVAC Company Repair My Old AC?
“We don’t repair systems that old.” Is that a technical necessity, a company policy, or a recommendation based on the actual condition of your equipment? Those are different things.
Trying to weigh a repair against replacement? Our free Repair vs. Replace Evaluator can help you organize the factors before making a decision. It is not a diagnosis.
Some repairs truly aren't practical
Severe coil deterioration, major compressor failure, unavailable parts, refrigerant issues, or repeated failures can make replacement more sensible than repair. Safety problems must be handled promptly.
But age isn’t the failed part
A ten- or fifteen-year-old unit may have a repairable capacitor, contactor, drain issue, control failure, or other serviceable problem. The technician should identify the defect and explain why repair is or isn’t appropriate.
What about R-22?
R-22 is no longer produced or imported for new U.S. supply, but existing systems are not automatically illegal to operate or repair. Service options depend on available refrigerant, leak condition, parts, and economics. Klein Cooling has worked on older R-22 equipment, and each case deserves its own evaluation.
Ask for both options
When practical, request a written repair scope and replacement scope. Compare the cost, expected reliability, warranty, condition of the rest of the system, and your plans for the home.
A second opinion is reasonable
If a company won’t discuss repair at all, ask whether that is their policy or a finding about your specific equipment. We serve Palm Coast, Bunnell, Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach, St. Augustine and surrounding Northeast Florida.
