This helps prevent compressor damage caused by inadequate refrigerant flow.

How Does a Defrost Control Board Work?

When operating in heating mode, a heat pump absorbs heat from outdoor air.

Because the outdoor coil becomes very cold, moisture in the air naturally freezes onto the coil.

The defrost control board monitors conditions using sensors and timing logic.

When enough frost has accumulated, the board temporarily:

  • Reverses the refrigeration cycle
  • Sends hot refrigerant through the outdoor coil
  • Melts accumulated frost
  • Returns the system to normal heating once defrost is complete
