Your A/C Technician Might Be Wrong.

That Doesn’t Mean He’s Lying to You.

Your air conditioner stops working.

A technician comes out, spends some time with the system, and gives you the news:

Your compressor is bad.

Or your TXV has failed.

Or your system is leaking refrigerant.

Or something was installed incorrectly.

And unfortunately, it’s going to be expensive.

Maybe really expensive.

So you do what more homeowners should probably do before spending thousands of dollars:

You get a second opinion.

Another technician comes out.

He looks at the same air conditioner.

And he tells you something completely different.

The compressor is fine.

The TXV appears to be working.

He can’t find the refrigerant leak.

The thing that supposedly needs thousands of dollars in corrective work doesn’t appear to need correcting at all.

Well.

Somebody got it wrong.

And the homeowner’s next question is usually pretty predictable:

“So the first guy was trying to rip me off?”

Maybe.

Dishonest people exist in HVAC just like they exist everywhere else.

But that’s not where we want to start.

We want to start somewhere our industry probably doesn’t start often enough:

With Grace.

Because there’s another possibility.

The first technician wasn’t trying to deceive you.

He was simply wrong.

And if you’ve worked in this trade long enough, that isn’t difficult to believe.

Because we’ve been wrong too.


These Aren’t Hypothetical Examples

Klein Cooling offers free second opinions when a homeowner has been told they need a major A/C repair or system replacement.

And just this summer, we’ve seen quite a few.

These are real situations we encountered.


The Six-Year-Old System That Was “Installed Wrong”

One homeowner had an approximately six-year-old system.

They were told the evaporator coil had been installed backwards and that correcting the problem would require thousands of dollars worth of work.

That’s a pretty alarming thing to hear about a relatively young system.

We inspected it.

We didn’t agree.

Based on what we found, we did not believe the homeowner needed to spend thousands of dollars correcting the installation.

That doesn’t automatically mean the first technician was dishonest.

It means two technicians looked at the same equipment and reached very different conclusions.

And when thousands of dollars are involved, that difference matters.


The Bad Compressor That Was a Contactor

Another homeowner had been told:

The compressor had failed.

That’s a big diagnosis.

Depending on the age and condition of the equipment, a failed compressor can quickly turn into a conversation about whether it even makes sense to repair the system.

We checked it.

The compressor wasn’t bad.

The problem was the contactor.

That is a dramatically different repair.

Same air conditioner.

Same homeowner.

Very different diagnosis.


The “Failing Compressor” That Was a Clogged Drain

Another homeowner had been told their compressor was failing.

Again, that can immediately put a homeowner into a major financial decision.

Do we replace the compressor?

How old is the system?

Should we repair it?

Should we replace the whole thing?

Except the compressor wasn’t failing.

The condensate drain was clogged.

The system was shutting itself down.

Once again:

Same symptom.

Very different cause.

Very different repair.

Very different conversation with the homeowner.


The Bad TXV That Was Working Fine

Then we had a homeowner whose evaporator coil had frozen.

The previous diagnosis?

Bad TXV.

When we arrived, the system had been turned off.

We restarted it and began testing.

The system operated.

The refrigerant readings did not support condemning the TXV.

We couldn’t reproduce the reported failure.

There was another important piece of information:

The previous technician had been troubleshooting the air handler with the blower door removed.

That matters.

Removing the blower door changes the airflow through the equipment.

And when you change airflow, you can change the refrigeration conditions you’re trying to diagnose.

Based on the system’s operation and the measurements we took, we didn’t have enough evidence to tell that homeowner:

“You need a TXV.”

So we didn’t.


The Leaking Filter Drier That Wasn’t Leaking

This one was an older system near the beach.

The homeowner had been told the filter drier was leaking refrigerant and needed to be replaced.

Or…

They could just replace the system.

We inspected it.

Was the filter drier rusty?

Absolutely.

It’s an older piece of HVAC equipment living near the Atlantic Ocean in Florida.

Rust wasn’t exactly a shocking discovery.

But:

Rust and a refrigerant leak are not the same thing.

We couldn’t find the leak the homeowner had been told was there.

The system was still holding its refrigerant charge.

It was operating normally.

There was corrosion, as you’d expect on older coastal equipment, but we didn’t find evidence that justified opening the refrigerant circuit and replacing the filter drier.

And opening an older coastal system unnecessarily isn’t something we particularly want to do.

So our recommendation was:

Leave it alone.

Monitor it.

Prepare for eventual replacement as the system continues to age.

But don’t spend money fixing something we can’t demonstrate is broken.

Sometimes the best repair recommendation is:

Don’t repair it.


And Then There Was the $4,000 TXV

This one illustrates exactly why second opinions matter.

The homeowner had been told their TXV was bad.

The quoted repair was approximately:

$4,000.

Then came the next part of the conversation.

Essentially:

“You’re already about a quarter of the way to a new system. You might as well replace it.”

Think about the progression.

Bad TXV.

$4,000 repair.

Repair is expensive.

You’re already a significant portion of the way toward replacement.

Therefore:

Buy a new air conditioner.

And depending on the age and condition of the equipment, that reasoning might be perfectly legitimate.

There was just one problem.

The TXV wasn’t the problem.

It was the thermostat.

And this is where a wrong diagnosis can become much more expensive than simply replacing the wrong part.

Because now an entire financial argument has been built on the original diagnosis.

Bad TXV → $4,000 repair → repair doesn’t make financial sense → replace the system.

That logic can sound perfectly reasonable.

But only if the first box is true.

If the TXV isn’t bad, everything built on top of that diagnosis falls apart.

Which leads us to one of the most important things we can tell a homeowner:

Before deciding whether an expensive repair is worth doing, make sure you actually need the expensive repair.


Read Those Again

Just from second opinions we’ve performed:

Failed compressor → contactor.

Failing compressor → clogged condensate drain.

Bad TXV → system operating normally.

Leaking filter drier → filter drier wasn’t leaking.

$4,000 bad TXV → thermostat.

Thousands in corrective work on a six-year-old system → we didn’t find evidence that the work was necessary.

These aren’t disagreements about whether a capacitor is getting a little weak.

Some of these diagnoses can change a homeowner’s decision by thousands and thousands of dollars.

And that’s usually when we’re asked:

“So was the other company trying to rip me off?”

Our answer?

We don’t know.

Because we weren’t there.


Let’s Start With Grace

There are dishonest people in HVAC.

We aren’t naive.

There are technicians who exaggerate problems.

There are companies that place enormous pressure on technicians to generate revenue.

There are businesses where the line between service technician and salesperson has become increasingly difficult to find.

And yes, there are people who will knowingly recommend something a homeowner doesn’t need because there’s money to be made.

That happens.

But something else happens too.

Technicians make mistakes.

They misinterpret readings.

They anchor onto the wrong diagnosis.

They overlook something simple.

They haven’t encountered that particular problem before.

Sometimes they’re inexperienced.

Sometimes they’re experienced.

Sometimes the equipment does something completely different ten minutes after they leave.

And sometimes they’re standing in front of a homeowner who desperately wants an answer…

And they don’t know.

There’s an enormous difference between:

“The technician got it wrong.”

and:

“The technician knowingly lied to you.”

We can often determine the first.

We generally cannot know the second.


We Weren’t There

This is important.

When we arrive for a second opinion, we weren’t standing beside the first technician.

We don’t know exactly what the system was doing.

We don’t know what measurements he took.

We don’t know what symptoms were present.

We don’t know what the homeowner told him at the time.

We don’t know what he’d been taught.

We don’t know what information he had available.

We don’t know what pressures his employer puts on him.

And most importantly:

We don’t know his heart.

So we’ll tell you what we found.

We’ll explain why our findings support—or don’t support—the original diagnosis.

We’ll show you the evidence when we can.

But we’re going to be very careful about telling you why another human being did something.

That’s a judgment we’re usually not qualified to make.


HVAC Technicians Aren’t Wizards

Despite what our confidence occasionally suggests.

There isn’t a magic machine we plug into your air conditioner that flashes:

BAD TXV.

COMPRESSOR HAS 37 DAYS TO LIVE.

STEVE INSTALLED THIS COIL BACKWARDS IN 2020.

We wish.

HVAC diagnosis is a process of gathering and interpreting evidence.

Temperatures.

Pressures.

Voltage.

Amperage.

Airflow.

Static pressure.

Refrigerant behavior.

Electrical circuits.

Control signals.

Fault codes.

Equipment history.

And whatever the air conditioner happens to be doing while we’re standing in front of it.

That last one can make things particularly fun.

The homeowner tells us:

“Yesterday it completely stopped working.”

We arrive.

Turn it on.

The thing runs beautifully.

Perfect temperatures.

Normal pressures.

Normal amperage.

No fault.

Nothing shuts down.

Fantastic.

Now diagnose that.

Welcome to service work.


Different Problems Can Look Remarkably Similar

A frozen evaporator coil does not automatically mean a bad TXV.

A compressor that isn’t running does not automatically mean a failed compressor.

A system shutting down does not automatically mean the compressor is failing.

Rust does not automatically mean refrigerant is leaking.

An unusual refrigerant reading doesn’t automatically identify one particular failed component.

And sometimes the way the equipment is being tested changes the conditions you’re trying to diagnose.

HVAC systems are interconnected.

Airflow affects refrigeration.

Refrigeration affects temperature.

Electrical problems can create symptoms that look mechanical.

Control problems can make perfectly good components appear dead.

A clogged condensate drain can shut down an otherwise perfectly functional air conditioner.

One symptom can have several possible causes.

That’s why good troubleshooting isn’t:

“I saw this symptom, therefore this part is bad.”

It’s:

“I saw this symptom. Now let’s figure out why.”


The Most Dangerous Pressure in HVAC Isn’t Refrigerant Pressure

It’s the pressure to have an answer.

Put yourself in the technician’s shoes.

The house is hot.

The homeowner is frustrated.

They’re looking at you.

They called you because you’re supposed to know what’s wrong.

You’ve been troubleshooting for an hour.

You’ve checked six things.

Something still doesn’t make sense.

You don’t know.

That’s an uncomfortable place to stand.

Especially for a younger technician.

So there’s a temptation to take:

“I think this might be the problem.”

and quietly turn it into:

“This is the problem.”

Those are very different statements.

And once you’ve confidently told everyone what the problem is, another very human thing can happen.

You become invested in being right.

The evidence supporting your diagnosis gets more attention.

The evidence contradicting it becomes easier to explain away.

Which is why one of the most important sentences an HVAC technician can learn is:

“I don’t know yet.”

Not:

“I don’t know what I’m doing.”

Not:

“I can’t fix this.”

Just:

“I don’t have enough evidence yet to condemn that component.”

That’s not incompetence.

Sometimes that’s the most competent answer available.


Experience Doesn’t Mean Always Having the Answer

We talk about this with apprentices.

When you’re brand new, you don’t even know what you don’t know.

Then you learn some things.

Then you learn enough to become confident.

Sometimes very confident.

Then, if you stay in the trade long enough, something interesting happens.

You learn enough to realize how complicated some of this actually is.

And eventually the experienced technician becomes much more comfortable saying:

“I have no idea. Let’s figure it out.”

That’s progress.

Because experience teaches you how expensive unsupported confidence can become.

Compressors are expensive.

TXVs can be expensive.

Opening a refrigerant circuit carries risks.

Major corrective work can cost thousands.

Replacing an entire system costs considerably more.

Before we recommend those things, we’d like to have a pretty good reason.


Being Wrong Is Not the Same as Being Dishonest

There’s a line here, and it’s worth defining.

A technician gathers evidence, reaches what he believes is a reasonable diagnosis, and later turns out to be wrong.

That’s a mistake.

A technician doesn’t have enough evidence but presents his best guess as absolute certainty because he’s uncomfortable admitting uncertainty.

That’s poor practice.

A technician receives information that contradicts his diagnosis and refuses to reconsider it.

That’s a bigger problem.

A technician knowingly tells a homeowner that a good component is bad because selling the repair or replacement benefits him?

That’s deception.

There is a difference.

We shouldn’t pretend dishonesty doesn’t exist.

But we also shouldn’t accuse someone of dishonesty simply because another technician reached a different conclusion.


The Second Technician Has an Advantage Nobody Talks About

Here’s something we need to acknowledge when we look brilliant on a second opinion:

We got to go second.

That’s an advantage.

We already know the first diagnosis.

We know what happened before the first technician arrived.

We know what the homeowner was told.

We know what happened afterward.

Sometimes we know what tests were performed.

Sometimes the equipment is behaving differently now.

And now there’s a completely fresh set of eyes looking at everything.

That matters.

Sometimes technician #2 catches something technician #1 missed.

But there’s another possibility homeowners should understand:

Technician #1 may have seen something technician #2 never gets to see.

Maybe the compressor really was overheating while he was there.

Maybe a safety opened.

Maybe the motor stopped.

Maybe the refrigerant pressures behaved differently.

Maybe an intermittent problem disappeared.

Maybe something changed between visits.

We don’t know.

That’s why we try very hard not to diagnose the previous technician.

We diagnose the air conditioner.


A Second Opinion Isn’t an Accusation

This is probably the most important idea in this entire article.

Getting a second opinion doesn’t mean you’re accusing your HVAC company of dishonesty.

It simply means:

“Before I spend several thousand dollars, I’d like another qualified technician to independently verify this diagnosis.”

That’s reasonable.

We encourage it.

And that includes our diagnoses.

If Klein Cooling tells you that your compressor has failed and you’re facing a major repair or system replacement, you have every right to ask another qualified technician to verify what we’re telling you.

We shouldn’t be offended by that.

It’s your house.

It’s your equipment.

It’s your money.

A second opinion isn’t an accusation.

It’s information.


Why Klein Cooling Offers Free Second Opinions

That’s exactly why we offer them.

We don’t want the cost of another service call to stop somebody from verifying a major financial decision.

If you’ve been told you need a significant A/C repair or system replacement, we’ll take another look.

Sometimes we’re going to disagree.

Sometimes we’ll find something much simpler.

Sometimes we won’t be able to reproduce the problem at all.

And sometimes we’ll tell you:

“The first technician is right.”

That’s a successful second opinion too.

Now you’ve had two independent technicians evaluate the system and reach the same conclusion.

You can make the decision with more confidence.

We’re not offering free second opinions because we’re promising to swoop in and save everybody thousands of dollars.

We’re offering them because:

Major decisions deserve good information.


Sometimes “Do Nothing” Is a Recommendation

Homeowners aren’t always expecting this one.

Sometimes our recommendation is:

Don’t repair anything right now.

Monitor it.

That’s what happened with the rusty filter drier.

The equipment was older.

It was coastal.

It had corrosion.

But we couldn’t verify the reported refrigerant leak, and the system was operating normally.

Could we replace the filter drier?

Sure.

But opening an older coastal refrigerant system to replace a component that isn’t demonstrably leaking doesn’t automatically leave the homeowner better off.

So we recommended monitoring it.

Doing nothing doesn’t mean we failed to diagnose the system.

Sometimes doing nothing is the result of the diagnosis.


We Don’t Need to Make the Other Guy the Villain

Technician #2 has an easy opportunity.

Make technician #1 look like an idiot.

Instant hero.

We don’t want to do that.

If another technician condemns your compressor and we find a failed contactor, we can explain exactly what we found.

If somebody diagnosed a TXV and we find a thermostat problem, we can explain why our testing points somewhere else.

If somebody reported a refrigerant leak and we can’t verify one, we’ll tell you.

The evidence can stand on its own.

We don’t need:

“That guy doesn’t know what he’s doing.”

We don’t need:

“That company was trying to rob you.”

Because we weren’t there.

And technicians, of all people, should understand why that matters.

Because eventually…

You’re going to be The Last Guy.


Every Technician Eventually Becomes “The Last Guy”

HVAC technicians love The Last Guy.

The Last Guy is responsible for everything.

Loose wire?

The Last Guy.

Missing screw?

The Last Guy.

Wrong refrigerant charge?

Definitely The Last Guy.

Drain pitched uphill?

We may not know his name, but we’re confident The Last Guy did it.

Then one day you’re standing in front of a system criticizing something you found.

And halfway through the thought you remember:

Wait.

I worked on this system last year.

Oh.

You’re The Last Guy.

That’s humbling.

And it’s a pretty good reason to extend some grace to the technician who stood there before you.

Because eventually another technician is going to stand in front of your work.

He’s going to find something you missed.

He’s going to disagree with one of your diagnoses.

The homeowner may ask him:

“Was the other technician trying to rip me off?”

You’d probably appreciate him answering carefully.

So we’re going to do the same.


Trust, But Verify

If someone tells you your air conditioner needs thousands of dollars in repairs, you don’t have to immediately assume they’re lying.

But you also don’t have to blindly accept the diagnosis.

Ask questions.

What failed?

How do we know?

What measurements support that diagnosis?

Can you show me what you found?

And when it’s a major financial decision:

Get a second opinion.

Especially if the system is relatively young.

Especially if the repair costs thousands.

Especially if the conversation suddenly moves from:

“You have a bad part.”

to:

“You might as well replace the whole system.”

That doesn’t automatically mean replacement is the wrong recommendation.

Sometimes replacement absolutely makes more financial sense than repairing an older or badly deteriorated system.

But before deciding whether a $4,000 repair makes financial sense…

Make sure you actually need the $4,000 repair.


Our Promise Isn’t That We’ll Always Be Right

We won’t.

Nobody who diagnoses complicated mechanical and electrical equipment for a living will be right every single time.

Every experienced technician has been wrong.

We certainly have.

Our responsibility isn’t to pretend otherwise.

Our responsibility is to be honest about:

What we know.

What we don’t know.

What the evidence supports.

And what it doesn’t.

We should be willing to change our diagnosis when the evidence changes.

We should be willing to say:

“I don’t know yet.”

We should be willing to tell a homeowner:

“I wouldn’t spend your money on that right now.”

And when another technician gets something wrong, we should remember that someday it’ll be our turn.


Maybe Your A/C Guy Just Got It Wrong

Sometimes we’ll perform a free second opinion and recommend exactly what the first company recommended.

Sometimes we’ll recommend replacement too.

Sometimes we’ll find a contactor underneath a condemned compressor.

Sometimes we’ll find a clogged drain underneath a “failing compressor.”

Sometimes the $4,000 TXV will turn out to be a thermostat.

Sometimes the leaking filter drier isn’t leaking.

Sometimes the system will run perfectly the entire time we’re there and we’ll have to tell you:

“We can’t reproduce the problem.”

That’s service work.

We’re not always going to know immediately.

We’re not always going to agree.

And we’re not always going to be right.

But there’s something all of us—homeowners, technicians and HVAC companies—could probably do a little better.

Lead with grace.

Your A/C technician might have gotten it wrong.

That doesn’t necessarily mean he was trying to deceive you.

Maybe he was inexperienced.

Maybe he misinterpreted a reading.

Maybe the equipment behaved differently.

Maybe he felt pressured to provide an answer when the correct answer was:

“I don’t know yet.”

Or maybe he simply made a mistake.

Because underneath the gauges, meters, uniforms and service trucks…

We’re still human.

Get the second opinion.

Verify the diagnosis.

Protect your money.

Ask for evidence.

But until you have a reason to believe otherwise:

Give the other guy a little grace.

We’d want the same.
