What Is a Package Air Conditioner?

Why is your entire heating and cooling system sitting outside your house — and is that normal?

Sometimes we arrive at a house and the homeowner points toward a large metal box outside.

“That’s my air conditioner.”

Yep.

Then they point toward the garage.

“Where’s the inside part?”

You don’t have one.

“What?”

Welcome to the package unit.

If you’ve lived in a house with a traditional split HVAC system your entire life, a package unit can look a little strange.

There’s no air handler in the garage.

No furnace in a closet.

No evaporator coil hiding in the attic.

No refrigerant lines running between an indoor and outdoor unit.

Instead:

The whole damn thing is outside.

Compressor.

Evaporator coil.

Condenser coil.

Blower.

Controls.

Heating components.

Drain pan.

Pretty much the entire heating and cooling operation lives inside one cabinet.

Then ductwork connects that cabinet to your house.

That’s a packaged HVAC system.

And yes.

It’s supposed to look like that.


First: What Does “Package Unit” Mean?

Most residential central air-conditioning systems fall into one of two basic configurations:

Split systems

and

Packaged systems.

A traditional split system is literally split into two major pieces.

You have an outdoor unit containing components such as the compressor and condenser coil.

Then you have indoor equipment containing the evaporator coil and blower.

Refrigerant tubing connects the two.

That’s probably the HVAC configuration most homeowners recognize.

A package unit takes those major components and puts them together inside one outdoor cabinet.

Hence:

Package.

For once, HVAC terminology actually makes sense.

Enjoy it.

It won’t last.


Where Is the Air Handler?

It’s in the box.

Where’s the evaporator coil?

Box.

Blower?

Box.

Compressor?

Box.

Condenser coil?

Still box.

That’s the whole idea.

Instead of refrigerant lines connecting an outdoor condenser to an indoor air handler, a residential package unit typically connects directly to the home’s supply and return ductwork.

Return air comes from the house to the package unit.

The equipment cools and dehumidifies that air.

Then the blower sends conditioned air back into the house through the supply duct system.

So although all the mechanical equipment is outdoors, it’s still heating and cooling the air inside your home.


Wait. My Indoor Air Goes Outside?

Yep.

Technically.

Your return air travels through ductwork to the package unit outside.

It gets conditioned.

Then it travels back through ductwork into your house.

This is why the duct connections at a package unit are extremely important.

Those ducts are exposed to Florida.

And Florida is waiting.

Heat.

Humidity.

Rain.

Sun.

Insects.

Rodents.

Vegetation.

And occasionally a lawn guy who appears personally offended by anything installed within twelve feet of grass.

The duct connections need to remain properly sealed, insulated and protected.

Because if your return duct starts pulling hot, humid outdoor air into the system?

Your air conditioner is now attempting to cool Florida.

Florida has not yet been successfully air conditioned.

We’ve checked.


What’s a Package Heat Pump?

This is extremely common terminology you’ll hear in our area.

A package heat pump puts the components needed for both cooling and heat-pump heating into that same outdoor cabinet.

During the summer, it moves heat from inside your home to the outdoors.

During cooler weather, the refrigeration cycle can reverse and move heat in the opposite direction.

Many systems also use electric auxiliary or supplemental heat when needed.

So when we say:

“You have a package heat pump.”

we aren’t describing two separate pieces of equipment.

It’s one packaged system providing both heating and cooling.


Why Would Someone Install a Package Unit Instead of a Split System?

Sometimes it’s simply how the house was designed.

Package units can make a lot of sense when indoor mechanical space is limited.

Instead of sacrificing:

A closet.

Garage space.

Attic space.

Or another indoor location for an air handler,

the equipment is placed outside and connected to the home’s duct system.

That can make installation and service access relatively straightforward in the right application.

And there are fewer major pieces of HVAC equipment occupying the house.

No indoor air handler means no air handler sweating in the attic.

No condensate drain running from an attic unit across the house.

No refrigerant lines traveling between an indoor and outdoor unit.

Everything is concentrated in one location.

There are advantages.

There are also trade-offs.

Because we put:

The entire air conditioner outside.

In Florida.


Florida Would Like a Word

Your package unit lives outside every second of its life.

Not just the condenser coil.

Everything.

The blower compartment.

Evaporator section.

Controls.

Electrical components.

Compressor.

Coils.

Cabinet.

Duct connections.

All of it lives in an outdoor cabinet designed to protect those components from the environment.

And in Florida, that environment can be pretty aggressive.

Heat.

Humidity.

Rain.

Salt air near the coast.

Wind-driven rain.

Storms.

Vegetation.

Lawn irrigation.

That doesn’t mean package units are bad.

They’re specifically designed to be installed outdoors.

It does mean the condition of the cabinet, panels, seals, duct connections and drainage system matters.

Especially as the equipment ages.


Are Package Units Less Efficient?

Not automatically.

“Package unit” describes the configuration, not the efficiency.

There are different package systems with different efficiency ratings and different types of compressors and controls.

You can have basic packaged equipment.

Higher-efficiency packaged equipment.

Single-stage systems.

Multi-stage systems.

And depending on the manufacturer and product line, more advanced equipment.

So:

Package = inefficient

isn’t a rule.

The efficiency depends on the actual equipment.


Are Package Units Easier to Work On?

Sometimes.

Ask an HVAC technician whether they’d rather work on a package unit standing outside or an air handler buried in a Florida attic in August.

You may receive an unusually enthusiastic answer.

Package units can provide excellent service access because the major components are located together at ground level.

Open the panels and there’s the system.

No attic ladder.

No crawling over trusses.

No balancing tools on insulation.

No discovering that the air handler was apparently installed by a team of contortionists who never anticipated another human being touching it.

That’s nice.

But package units have their own challenges.

And because everything is together, a problem involving the cabinet, drain, duct connection or outdoor environment can affect parts of the system that would normally live safely indoors on a split system.

Different configuration.

Different problems.


What Are Those Two Big Ducts Connected to It?

Those are generally your return and supply connections.

One brings air from the house to the package unit.

The other sends conditioned air back into the house.

And we pay a lot of attention to them.

Why?

Because they’re connecting an outdoor appliance to an indoor conditioned space.

If those connections deteriorate, leak, become poorly sealed or lose insulation, you can end up with:

Air leakage.

Heat gain.

Humidity problems.

Condensation.

Reduced airflow.

Energy loss.

Water damage.

Poor comfort.

Or some entertaining combination of all seven.

A package unit can be operating beautifully while damaged duct connections quietly sabotage everything it’s doing.


Package Units Still Make Condensate

Remember:

Air conditioners don’t just cool air.

They remove moisture.

When warm, humid return air passes across the cold evaporator coil, moisture condenses out of the air.

That water has to go somewhere.

Package units have condensate drainage systems just like other air-conditioning equipment.

And because the equipment is outdoors, homeowners sometimes assume a little water around it doesn’t matter.

Sometimes it doesn’t.

Sometimes it does.

The question is:

Where is the water coming from, and is it going where it was designed to go?

Condensate leaving the proper drain?

Normal.

Water sitting inside a compartment where electrical controls live?

We should probably discuss that.


“Can I Replace My Package Unit With a Split System?”

Technically?

Often, yes.

Practically?

How much money and construction would you like to discuss today?

Changing from packaged equipment to a split system isn’t necessarily a simple equipment swap.

Now we may need:

A location for the indoor air handler.

New refrigerant lines.

Electrical modifications.

Condensate drainage.

Duct modifications.

Structural changes.

Possibly additional permitting or other work depending on the application.

That’s why replacing a package unit with another appropriately selected package unit is often the most straightforward option.

The house was designed around that equipment configuration.

That doesn’t mean conversion is impossible.

It means:

We’re going to look at the house before promising anything.

A surprisingly useful HVAC policy.


“Can I Replace My Split System With a Package Unit?”

Same answer.

Maybe.

But why?

If there’s a legitimate reason to change the equipment configuration, we’ll evaluate it.

But we’re not going to relocate half your HVAC system outdoors just because somebody discovered package units in a catalog.

The equipment should fit the building.

Not the other way around.


How Long Does a Package Unit Last?

Here comes everyone’s favorite answer:

It depends.

Age matters.

But so do:

Installation quality.

Maintenance.

Runtime.

Electrical conditions.

Drainage.

Airflow.

Duct condition.

Environment.

Coastal exposure.

Repair history.

And plain old luck.

A package unit doesn’t become dead because the calendar reached a particular number.

And it doesn’t become healthy because somebody says:

“It’s only eight years old.”

We evaluate the actual equipment.

What condition is it in?

How is it operating?

What’s failed?

Can it reasonably be repaired?

What would the repair cost?

What’s the overall condition?

Then we talk about options.


Should I Replace My Package Unit Because It’s Rusty?

Ah.

Florida.

Especially coastal Florida.

Outdoor HVAC equipment corrodes.

And because a package unit puts the entire system outdoors, corrosion deserves attention.

But we’ve already established a rule around here:

Corrosion is information. It is not automatically a diagnosis.

Surface rust on a panel doesn’t necessarily mean the air conditioner needs to be replaced.

Severe structural deterioration?

Different conversation.

Coil corrosion causing refrigerant leaks?

Different conversation.

Electrical deterioration?

Different conversation.

The question isn’t:

“Is there rust?”

The question is:

“What is the rust actually affecting?”

Your package unit looking like it spent a few semesters at sea doesn’t automatically mean we’re planning its funeral.


What Should Be Checked During Package Unit Maintenance?

A proper maintenance visit shouldn’t consist of:

Spray coil.

Pour mystery liquid down drain.

Slap sticker on cabinet.

We want to evaluate the system.

Depending on the equipment and application, that includes things like:

Electrical components and connections.

Capacitors where applicable.

Compressor operation.

Blower operation.

Condenser fan operation.

Refrigerant performance.

Temperature change.

Airflow.

Evaporator and condenser coil condition.

Condensate drainage.

Cabinet condition.

Duct connections.

Safety controls.

Heat operation.

Filters.

And anything else specific to that equipment.

The goal isn’t to find something to sell you.

It’s to establish:

How is the system actually doing?


Package Unit vs. Split System: Which Is Better?

Neither.

That’s like asking:

“Which is better: a pickup truck or an SUV?”

What are we doing with it?

A package unit can be an excellent solution for a house designed for packaged equipment.

A split system can be an excellent solution for a house designed around a split system.

Each has advantages.

Each has disadvantages.

And both are perfectly capable of breaking at 4:57 PM on Friday.

HVAC remains remarkably fair in that regard.


The Big Advantage Homeowners Usually Don’t Think About

There is one package-unit advantage that becomes immediately obvious during certain repairs:

We aren’t in your attic.

If the blower needs service?

Outside.

Evaporator coil?

Outside.

Electrical controls?

Outside.

Compressor?

Outside.

That’s often great for service access.

It’s also pretty nice when the Florida attic is approximately the surface temperature of Mercury.

Your technician appreciates your package unit.

We may not say it.

But we do.


The Big Disadvantage Homeowners Usually Don’t Think About

The entire system is exposed to the outdoor environment.

A split system keeps a significant portion of the equipment indoors or at least within the building envelope.

A package unit doesn’t have that luxury.

That makes things like:

Cabinet integrity.

Weather sealing.

Corrosion.

Duct connections.

Drainage.

And equipment placement

particularly important.

Again:

Not bad.

Different.


If You Have a Package Unit, You Don’t Need to Become an HVAC Technician

You really don’t.

You should know enough to understand what you own.

That’s what A/C University is for.

Know where your filter is.

Keep vegetation from swallowing the equipment.

Pay attention to unusual noises.

Don’t block airflow.

If you notice water somewhere it shouldn’t be, have it checked.

And if somebody tells you:

“Your package unit is bad.”

ask the obvious next question:

“What’s wrong with it?”

Show me.

Measure it.

Test it.

Explain it.

Then we can decide what makes sense.

Because package unit is a description of your HVAC system.

It isn’t a diagnosis.
