Straight Cool vs. Heat Pump: What’s the Difference in Florida?
What each system actually does, how they heat your house, and why the reversing valve is the key difference.
Sometimes we’re looking at a homeowner’s HVAC system and say:
“You’ve got a straight-cool system.”
And they look at us like we just diagnosed their air conditioner with a personality trait.
“A what?”
Straight cool.
It’s one of those HVAC terms technicians use constantly and homeowners have absolutely no reason to know.
The good news is that this one is pretty simple.
A straight-cool air conditioner uses the refrigeration system to cool your house but does not reverse that refrigeration cycle to provide heat.
That’s basically it.
The interesting part is:
If it only cools, what happens when you turn the thermostat to HEAT?
And why are heat pumps so common in Florida?

First: What Does “Straight Cool” Mean?
Let’s start with what your air conditioner does during the summer.
Your AC doesn’t actually manufacture cold air.
It moves heat.
Refrigerant circulates through the system, absorbing heat from the air inside your house and rejecting that heat outdoors.
So during normal cooling:
Heat moves from INSIDE → OUTSIDE.
The indoor air gets cooler.
The outdoor air gets somebody else’s problem.
That’s air conditioning.
A straight-cool system performs that refrigeration cycle in one direction:
Cooling.
When the thermostat calls for cooling, the system moves heat from inside the house to the outdoors.
When winter arrives, however, the refrigeration system itself doesn’t reverse and bring heat back into the house.
That’s the big difference between a straight-cool air conditioner and a heat pump.
What Is a Heat Pump, Then?
A heat pump is essentially an air conditioner that can operate its refrigeration cycle in both directions.
During cooling:
INSIDE → OUTSIDE.
During heating:
OUTSIDE → INSIDE.
And there’s an actual component inside the outdoor unit that helps make that possible:
The reversing valve.
The reversing valve redirects refrigerant through the system so the indoor and outdoor coils can effectively swap jobs.
That’s why the same heat-pump system that cools your house in August can provide heat in January.

For our purposes here, remember:
Straight cool = refrigeration provides cooling.
Heat pump = refrigeration provides cooling AND heating.
That’s the fundamental difference.
“But My Straight-Cool Air Conditioner Has Heat.”
Yep.
It absolutely can.
Having a straight-cool AC does not necessarily mean your house has no heat.
It means the refrigeration system itself isn’t providing the heat.
In many Florida straight-cool installations, heating is provided by electric resistance heat strips installed in the indoor equipment.
Think of electric heat strips somewhat like a giant electric toaster.
Electricity passes through resistance heating elements.
The elements get hot.
The blower moves air across them.
Warm air enters the house.
That description is simplified, obviously.
Please do not put bread in your air handler.
So My Air Conditioner Doesn’t Heat, but My Air Handler Does?
In a typical straight-cool/electric-heat configuration:
Essentially, yes.
During cooling, the outdoor AC and indoor equipment work together to cool and dehumidify the house.
When heating is needed, electric resistance heaters provide the heat instead of reversing the refrigeration cycle.
That’s very different from a heat pump.
With a heat pump, the outdoor refrigeration system continues operating during normal heating because it’s actually moving heat into the house.
With straight cool and electric heat?
The refrigeration system isn’t doing the heating.

Here’s the homeowner version.
Straight-Cool Air Conditioner
Cooling: Yes
Refrigeration-cycle heating: No
Electric heat strips: Can be used
Reversing valve: No
Outdoor unit normally runs during electric-strip heating: No
Heat-pump defrost cycle: No
Heat Pump
Cooling: Yes
Refrigeration-cycle heating: Yes
Electric heat strips: Can be used for auxiliary/supplemental heat
Reversing valve: Yes
Outdoor unit normally runs during heat-pump heating: Yes
Heat-pump defrost cycle: Yes
That’s really the whole argument.
They both air condition.
The major difference is what happens when you ask them to heat.
Why Are Heat Pumps So Common in Florida?
Because Florida is basically heat-pump country.
Our winters are relatively mild.
A heat pump can take heat that already exists in the outdoor air and move it into the house rather than generating all of its heat through electric resistance.
And yes:
There is still heat outside when it’s 42 degrees.
If there weren’t, we’d have considerably bigger problems than your thermostat.
Because a heat pump moves heat rather than relying entirely on resistance heating, it can generally provide normal heating more efficiently than electric heat strips alone.
And Florida’s relatively mild winter temperatures make heat pumps a very logical fit.

Because houses aren’t HVAC textbooks.
Straight-cool systems still exist throughout Florida.
You’ll find them in:
Condos.
Older installations.
Properties with very low heating demand.
Buildings designed around electric resistance heat.
Certain replacement applications.
And sometimes simply because:
That’s what the building already has.
And that’s okay.
We don’t arrive at a perfectly functional straight-cool application and scream:
WHERE IS THE REVERSING VALVE?!
The question isn’t whether heat pumps exist.
The question is:
What makes sense for this particular property?
Is a Heat Pump Better Than Straight Cool?
For many Florida homeowners?
A heat pump has a significant heating advantage.
But that doesn’t automatically mean every straight-cool installation is wrong.
We’d want to know:
What equipment is already there?
How much heating does the property actually use?
What’s the electrical configuration?
Is it a condo?
Are there building or association restrictions?
What’s the difference in equipment cost?
Would changing equipment types require additional modifications?
What does the homeowner actually want?
Sometimes:
Heat pump.
Sometimes:
Straight cool.
The answer should come after looking at the application.
Not before.
Does Straight Cool Cost More to Run?
This needs an important distinction.
During cooling?
Not inherently.
A heat pump isn’t magically a more efficient air conditioner simply because it can reverse itself.
Cooling efficiency depends on the actual equipment:
SEER2 rating.
Compressor technology.
Sizing.
Installation.
Airflow.
Ductwork.
Controls.
Operating conditions.
And plenty of other factors.
You could have a higher-efficiency straight-cool system and a lower-efficiency heat pump.
Straight cool vs. heat pump does not tell you the cooling efficiency.
The big operating-cost difference appears during:
Heating.
Let’s Talk About Heat Strips
Electric resistance heat is wonderfully simple.
Electricity goes in.
Heat comes out.
Unfortunately:
Quite a lot of electricity can go in.
Heat strips can serve as the primary heat source with straight-cool equipment.
They can also serve as auxiliary or supplemental heat with a heat pump.
That’s an important distinction.
A heat pump can provide normal heating through the refrigeration cycle and bring on supplemental electric heat when needed.
A straight-cool/electric-heat system doesn’t have that first option.
When it needs heat:
Strips.
This matters more the longer and more frequently you heat the house.
Thankfully, we live in Florida.
Heating season here is less of a season and more of an occasional scheduling conflict.
Why Does My Heat Pump Run Outside When the Heat Is On?
Because it’s actually doing something.
A heat pump uses the outdoor coil, compressor, refrigerant circuit and indoor coil to move heat into the house.
So if your thermostat says:
HEAT
and the outdoor unit is running?
That can be completely normal.
Homeowners moving here from northern climates sometimes see this and think:
“Why is my air conditioner running? I have the heat on.”
Because it’s a heat pump.
It’s heating.
Your outdoor unit didn’t miss the memo.
Why Doesn’t My Straight-Cool Outdoor Unit Run During Heat?
Because the refrigeration system isn’t providing the heat.
If you have a typical straight-cool system with electric resistance heating, the indoor equipment is handling the heating call.
No need for the condenser to join the meeting.
That’s actually one quick clue technicians can use when identifying what type of system they’re looking at.
But please don’t start diagnosing your neighbor’s equipment from the sidewalk.
We have enough problems.
Does Straight Cool Have a Reversing Valve?
No.
It doesn’t need one.
Remember:
A reversing valve exists because a heat pump needs to change the direction of refrigerant flow between heating and cooling operation.
Straight cool doesn’t reverse the refrigeration cycle.
So:
No reversing valve.
That’s one of the most important physical differences between the two systems.

We went entirely too far with it.
As usual.
Does Straight Cool Go Into Defrost?
No.
At least not in the heat-pump sense.
During heat-pump heating, the outdoor coil becomes cold.
Under the right outdoor conditions, frost can accumulate on that coil.
The heat pump periodically needs to remove it.
So the system temporarily changes refrigeration operation and warms the outdoor coil.
And what component helps it change refrigeration direction?
Our friend the reversing valve.
That’s why heat pumps can occasionally make dramatic noises or produce enormous clouds of steam on cold mornings.
Straight-cool systems aren’t using their outdoor refrigeration circuit for heating.
Therefore:
No heat-pump heating cycle.
No heat-pump defrost cycle.
No neighbor posting:
“MY AC IS SMOKING!!!”
at 6:14 AM.
Is Straight Cool Simpler?
In some ways?
Yes.
A basic straight-cool system doesn’t need some of the components and controls associated with heat-pump operation.
No reversing valve.
No heat-pump defrost cycle.
No need to reverse refrigeration operation between heating and cooling.
That’s fewer things involved in the refrigeration system.
But let’s not get carried away.
It’s still an air conditioner.
It still has:
A compressor.
Coils.
Motors.
Refrigerant.
Electrical components.
Controls.
Drainage.
Blower equipment.
And approximately seventeen opportunities to ruin your Saturday.
Can I Replace Straight Cool With a Heat Pump?
Often?
Yes.
But we’re not promising that every conversion is simply:
REMOVE BOX A. INSTALL BOX B.
Depending on the property, changing from straight cool to heat pump may involve:
Thermostat controls.
Wiring.
Indoor equipment compatibility.
Electrical considerations.
Heat-kit configuration.
Refrigerant piping.
Condo requirements.
Equipment matching.
And other installation-specific details.
Sometimes conversion makes perfect sense.
Sometimes replacing straight cool with straight cool makes more sense.
Look at the building first.
Then pick the equipment.
It’s a surprisingly effective system.
Can I Replace a Heat Pump With Straight Cool?
Potentially.
But again:
Why?
There may be a perfectly legitimate reason.
Equipment availability.
Application.
Building requirements.
Budget.
Existing heating arrangements.
Owner preference.
But you should understand what you’re changing.
If your heat pump currently provides most of your winter heating through refrigeration and you replace it with straight cool plus electric resistance heat:
Your heating operation changes.
That’s something we’d like to discuss before installation.
Not when the first cold snap arrives and you open the electric bill wondering whether somebody installed a cryptocurrency mine in your garage.

Not:

That’s what this actual installation was priced at.

Salt.
Whether you install straight cool or a heat pump, outdoor HVAC equipment near the Atlantic lives a different life than equipment farther inland.
Salt-laden air can accelerate corrosion of:
Coils.
Cabinets.
Fasteners.
Electrical components.
Fan assemblies.
And other exposed metal.
But remember:
Corrosion is information. It isn’t automatically a diagnosis.

Which One Should I Buy?
Here comes our favorite HVAC answer:
It depends.
Sorry.
If you want somebody to tell you that one particular type of equipment is universally superior for every Florida home, we’re probably going to disappoint you.
For many Florida homes, heat pumps make tremendous sense.
They cool like air conditioners and provide efficient refrigeration-based heating during our relatively mild winters.
But straight cool can still make sense depending on:
The property.
Existing equipment.
Heating demand.
Installation requirements.
Budget.
Building restrictions.
And what the homeowner actually wants.
We don’t sell:
THE BEST AIR CONDITIONER.
We try to determine:
What’s the best fit for this house?
Those are not the same thing.
Don’t Confuse Equipment Type With Equipment Quality
One last thing.
Straight cool does not mean:
Cheap.
Bad.
Builder-grade.
Low efficiency.
Old-fashioned.
Likewise:
Heat pump does not automatically mean:
Premium.
Variable speed.
High efficiency.
Fancy.
There are different efficiency levels, compressor technologies and equipment tiers within both categories.
Straight cool versus heat pump primarily tells you:
What can the refrigeration system do?
Straight cool:
Cool.
Heat pump:
Cool and heat.
Everything after that requires looking at the actual equipment.

The Bottom Line
A straight-cool air conditioner uses refrigeration to cool your house but does not reverse that refrigeration cycle to provide heat.
If the home has heating, that may be provided by electric resistance heat or another heating source.
A heat pump can reverse the refrigeration cycle and move heat in either direction.
That’s why it can:
Cool your house in August.
and:
Heat your house in January.
The component that makes that change in refrigerant direction possible is the reversing valve.
