How to Avoid an Air Conditioning Service Call

Believe it or not, there are quite a few things homeowners can safely check on their own before scheduling a service call.

Some problems absolutely require a technician.

Others…

Well…

Let’s just say I’d rather teach you something than charge you for something simple.

Let’s get started.

1. Change Your Air Filter

If you only remember one thing from this article…

Remember this.

A dirty air filter is like asking someone to breathe through a pillow.

Technically possible…

Not enjoyable.

Your air conditioner feels the same way.

A clogged filter restricts airflow, making your system work harder than it should.

That can lead to:

Higher electric bills
Reduced cooling
Frozen evaporator coils
Poor humidity control
Premature equipment wear

Check your filter every month.

Replace it when it’s dirty.

Simple.

2. Give Your Outdoor Unit a Shower

Your outdoor unit spends every day outside.

In Florida.

Collecting dirt.

Grass.

Leaves.

Pollen.

The occasional lizard.

Every month or two, give it a gentle rinse with a garden hose.

Notice I said…

Garden hose.

Not…

Pressure washer.

Pressure washers and air conditioner coils have ended many beautiful friendships.

3. Trim the Landscaping

Your condenser likes landscaping.

It just doesn’t want to live inside it.

Try to keep bushes and plants about 18-24 inches away.

Plants grow.

Your air conditioner unfortunately doesn’t own hedge trimmers.

4. Meet Your Drain Line

Your air conditioner removes gallons of water from your home’s air every single day during the summer.

That water has to go somewhere.

Take a few minutes to figure out where your condensate drain comes out.

If it’s dripping while the air conditioner is running…

That’s usually a good sign.

If it suddenly stops…

Or you notice water around the indoor unit…

It’s trying to tell you something.

5. Vinegar Is Your Friend

If your system has a condensate drain cleanout, pour about one cup of plain white vinegar into it every month or two during cooling season.

This helps reduce algae and slime buildup.

Please don’t use bleach.

Your drain line isn’t whitening laundry.

6. “My Thermostat Went Blank!”

Take a deep breath.

A blank thermostat doesn’t automatically mean your air conditioner is broken.

In fact, one of the most common causes—especially here in Florida—is a clogged condensate drain.

Most systems have a safety switch that shuts everything down if the drain backs up.

It’s there to help prevent water damage to your home.

Before calling for service, here’s what I’d check:

Is the condensate drain clogged?
Has the safety switch tripped?
Is the air handler breaker ON?
Is the outdoor breaker ON?

If you can safely clear the drain and the safety switch resets…

Congratulations.

You just saved yourself a service call.

Honestly…

I love helping people.

But I also hate showing up just to charge someone for something they could have safely fixed themselves in five minutes.

I’d much rather teach you how your system works than take your money for something simple.

Now…

If the drain keeps clogging…

The breaker keeps tripping…

Or the thermostat stays blank after you’ve checked these things…

That’s your system telling you something else is going on.

7. Speaking of Breakers…

If a breaker trips…

You can reset it once.

That’s it.

If it immediately trips again…

Leave it alone.

Breakers don’t trip because they’re bored.

They’re trying to protect your home and your equipment.

Resetting it over and over isn’t fixing the problem.

It’s just delaying it.

At that point…

Give us a call.

We’ll figure out why it tripped.

8. Listen to Your Air Conditioner

Every system makes some noise.

Grinding?

Screeching?

Metal scraping?

Not normal.

If your air conditioner suddenly sounds like it’s auditioning for a heavy metal band…

Turn it off.

We’ll come take a look.

Small repairs are almost always cheaper than major repairs.

9. Double-Check the Thermostat

This one might sound obvious.

It isn’t.

We’ve driven to service calls where the thermostat was accidentally set to:

HEAT
OFF
FAN ON

It happens.

No judgment.

Take thirty seconds to double-check.

You might save yourself a service charge.

10. Let It Breathe

Please don’t close every supply vent because nobody uses that room.

And try not to block supply or return vents with furniture, rugs, or curtains.

Your air conditioner was designed to move a certain amount of air.

Help it do its job.

11. Watch for Warning Signs

Don’t ignore these:

Ice on the refrigerant lines
Water around the indoor unit
Burning smells
Warm air
Loud buzzing
Constant starting and stopping
Electric bills that suddenly look like a mortgage payment

Small problems are usually much cheaper than big ones.

12. Maintenance Isn’t Exciting…

Neither are oil changes.

Until you skip them.

Professional maintenance allows us to:

Check refrigerant performance
Test electrical components
Clean coils
Inspect motors
Verify airflow
Catch small issues before they become expensive repairs

It’s one of the best investments you can make in your HVAC system.

Things I’d Rather You Didn’t Do

Please leave these to a licensed HVAC technician:

Add refrigerant.
Replace electrical components.
Open the refrigerant system.
Bypass safety switches.
Spray random chemicals into your air conditioner.
Take HVAC advice from your neighbor who “used to do air conditioning back in ’92.”

(He might know exactly what he’s talking about…

He also might still think R-22 is $40 a jug.)

When in Doubt…

Call.

Seriously.

I’d much rather answer a simple question than have you accidentally turn a $50 problem into a $500 repair.

Sometimes the answer really is that simple.

Sometimes it isn’t.
