A technician comes out.
They spend some time with the system.
Then you hear:
“Your compressor is bad.”
Or:
“You’ve got a refrigerant leak.”
Or:
“The coil needs to be replaced.”
Or the sentence that tends to make everybody’s stomach drop:
“Honestly, you should probably just replace the whole system.”
And then comes the estimate.
$2,800.
$4,500.
$9,000.
$15,000.
Maybe more.
At this point, we have a suggestion.
Before you spend thousands of dollars, let somebody else look at it.
That’s it.

Wait. Completely Free?
Yes.
If another HVAC company has diagnosed a major repair or recommended replacing your system and you’d like us to take another look, we’ll provide a second opinion at no charge.
We’re not saying:
“CALL US SO WE CAN PROVE THOSE OTHER GUYS ARE CROOKS!”
Good grief.
That’s not the point.
Sometimes the first technician is absolutely correct.
Sometimes there are multiple reasonable ways to approach the same problem.
Sometimes additional testing changes the diagnosis.
And sometimes?
Somebody just got it wrong.
HVAC technicians are human.
Including us.
We have tools.
We have training.
We have experience.
We also occasionally put our sunglasses on our heads and spend five minutes looking for our sunglasses.
Nobody receives omniscience with their EPA certification.
A second set of eyes can be valuable.
A Second Opinion Doesn’t Mean You Think the First Technician Is Lying
This matters.
There seems to be this weird assumption that getting another opinion means you’re accusing the first contractor of dishonesty.
You’re not.
Imagine your doctor told you that you needed a major procedure.
Would getting another medical opinion automatically mean:
“THIS DOCTOR IS A FRAUD.”
Of course not.
It’s a significant decision.
You want to be confident before moving forward.
HVAC obviously isn’t medicine.
But the principle is pretty reasonable.
If you’re about to spend several thousand dollars based on one diagnosis, having another qualified person independently evaluate the system isn’t insulting.
It’s due diligence.
And Sometimes We’ll Tell You the First Company Is Right
This is important enough to put near the top.
If another company tells you the compressor is bad, and we test it and determine:
Yep. Compressor is bad.
That’s what we’re going to tell you.
We’re not going to invent an alternate diagnosis just so we can become the hero of the story.
Sometimes our free second opinion is:
“They’re right.”
Maybe we’d recommend the same repair.
Maybe we’d price it differently.
Maybe we’d discuss repair versus replacement differently.
Maybe there are other options worth considering.
But if the diagnosis is correct?
The diagnosis is correct.
That’s useful information too.
Now you can make the decision with considerably more confidence.
But Sometimes the Diagnosis Changes
HVAC systems are complicated.
Symptoms overlap.
Low airflow can affect refrigerant readings.
Electrical problems can look like equipment failures.
A bad sensor can produce strange system behavior.
A condensate safety can shut an entire system down.
Controls can fail.
Wiring can fail.
Refrigerant problems require actual measurements and interpretation.
And modern communicating and inverter equipment has added another entire layer of electronics, sensors and diagnostics.
That’s why we like:
Measure. Test. Verify.
Instead of:
Look. Guess. Estimate.
“Your Compressor Is Bad.”
Okay.
How do we know?
This is not you challenging the technician to HVAC combat.
It’s a reasonable question.
What did they test?
What were the electrical readings?
Is the compressor grounded?
Is a winding open?
Is it mechanically locked?
Is it receiving proper voltage?
Are the controls actually commanding it to operate?
Are other electrical components involved?
What specifically led to the diagnosis?
A technician should be able to explain this in homeowner language.
You don’t need a refrigeration degree.
You just need to understand:
What failed?
How do we know?
What are my options?
“You Have a Refrigerant Leak.”
Okay.
Where?
Maybe the answer is:
“We haven’t located it yet.”
That’s perfectly legitimate.
Finding a leak and determining that a system appears to be losing refrigerant aren’t necessarily the same step.
But if you’re being presented with a major coil replacement because of a refrigerant leak, we’d like to understand the evidence supporting that recommendation.
Where is the leak?
Was it electronically detected?
Was there visible oil?
Was soap solution used?
Was a pressure test performed where appropriate?
What were the refrigerant readings?
What else was evaluated?
Again:
We’re not interrogating anybody under a swinging lightbulb.
We’re verifying an expensive diagnosis.
“Your TXV Is Bad.”
Oh boy.
The TXV.
HVAC’s favorite suspect.
Poor thing.
A thermostatic expansion valve can absolutely fail.
But refrigerant problems and airflow problems can produce readings that require careful interpretation.
A TXV shouldn’t be sentenced to death because somebody looked at one gauge for eleven seconds.
Before an expensive metering-device repair, we want to understand the entire refrigeration picture.
Airflow.
Indoor conditions.
Outdoor conditions.
Superheat.
Subcooling.
Pressures.
Temperature measurements.
Manufacturer specifications.
And what the system is actually doing.
Diagnose the system.
Don’t just nominate a part.
“Your Air Conditioner Is Old.”
That’s not actually a diagnosis.
Age matters.
Of course it does.
Repairing a 17-year-old air conditioner deserves a different financial conversation than repairing a three-year-old system.
But:
“It’s old.”
doesn’t answer:
What’s wrong with it?
A 15-year-old system can have a $200 problem.
A five-year-old system can have a $3,000 problem.
Age helps us decide what to do after we know what’s wrong.
It shouldn’t replace diagnosis.
Replacement May Still Be the Right Answer
We’re not anti-replacement.
We install air conditioners.
We like installing air conditioners.
New equipment is wonderful.
Quiet.
Efficient.
Clean.
Shiny.
Nobody has yet spilled attic insulation into it.
But replacement should make sense.
If you have an older system with:
A major compressor failure.
A badly deteriorated coil.
Repeated refrigerant leaks.
Severe corrosion.
Multiple expensive repairs.
Obsolete or difficult-to-source components.
Or a repair that simply doesn’t make financial sense relative to replacement?
We’ll tell you.
Repair-Before-Replace does not mean Repair-At-All-Costs.
Sometimes replacement is the smarter decision.
We just want to arrive at that decision after diagnosing the equipment.
A Free Second Opinion Isn’t a Free Sales Appointment
This distinction matters to us.
We aren’t offering a free second opinion as:

You don’t need to sit at the kitchen table.
We don’t need all decision-makers present.
We’re not sending a Comfort Advisor.
We’re not going to ask:
“If we could make the numbers work today…”
No.
We’re there to look at the air conditioner.
If the first diagnosis is right, we’ll tell you.
If we find something different, we’ll explain it.
If repair makes sense, we’ll tell you what that costs.
If replacement makes sense, we’ll explain why and give you options.
And then?
You decide.
Wild concept.
Bring Us the First Diagnosis If You Have It
If another company gave you:
An invoice.
An estimate.
Photos.
Measurements.
Diagnostic notes.
Fault codes.
A written recommendation.
Great.
Show us.
That doesn’t mean we’re simply going to accept their conclusion.
We’re doing our own evaluation.
But knowing what they observed can be useful.
Maybe they caught an intermittent problem.
Maybe conditions were different when they were there.
Maybe the system was displaying a fault code that’s no longer active.
Information helps.
We’re Not Grading the Other Technician
We’re diagnosing your air conditioner.
There’s a difference.
If we find something different, our report isn’t:

We explain what we found.
Because there can be legitimate reasons two technicians reach different conclusions.
Conditions change.
Intermittent failures happen.
Measurements change.
Problems develop.
And sometimes two technicians can look at the same aging system and make different but perfectly reasonable recommendations about repair versus replacement.
The homeowner doesn’t need an HVAC cage match.
They need information.
A Real Free Second Opinion in Matanzas Shores
Here’s a perfect example of why we offer this.
We recently performed a free second opinion on a 7-year-old Lennox system in Matanzas Shores in Palm Coast, Florida.
Another company had diagnosed a refrigerant leak and recommended a major repair.
So we evaluated the system.
What did we find?
We found no evidence of a refrigerant leak during our evaluation.
What we did find was significant coastal corrosion.
And that’s important.
This system lives near the Atlantic.
Coastal air is hard on HVAC equipment, and significant corrosion absolutely affects how we think about putting major money into a system.
But:
Corrosion is not a refrigerant-leak diagnosis.
Those are two different findings.
So our recommendation wasn’t:
“EVERYTHING IS PERFECT! KEEP IT FOREVER!”
No.
We recommended monitoring the system, preparing financially for eventual replacement, and being cautious about putting major repair money into it because of its overall condition and coastal environment.
That’s a much more nuanced answer than:
Good.
or:
Bad.
The homeowner now had information to make the decision.
And the price for our second opinion?
$0.
Free means free.
And Yes, That Coastal Corrosion Still Matters
This Matanzas Shores system is also a great example of something we talk about constantly along the coast.
Salt air is brutal on outdoor HVAC equipment.
A relatively young system near the Atlantic can sometimes look considerably older than equipment installed farther inland.
But we’ve got a rule:
Corrosion is information. It isn’t the entire diagnosis.
A corroded condenser may still have acceptable refrigeration performance, proper airflow and a compressor operating within specification. Conversely, corrosion can eventually contribute to serious coil, electrical, structural and refrigerant problems.
We’ve written an entire article about that because coastal homeowners hear the same sentence approximately 14,000 times:
“That’s the price you pay to live by the ocean.”
We know.
Now tell us what’s actually wrong with the air conditioner.

What Happens During Our Free Second Opinion?
We’re not necessarily repeating every single procedure the first contractor performed.
We evaluate the system based on:
The original complaint.
The diagnosis you were given.
The equipment involved.
Current operating conditions.
And what testing is appropriate to verify or challenge that diagnosis.
That may include evaluating:
- Refrigeration performance
- Electrical operation
- Compressor operation
- Airflow and temperature performance
- Controls and sensors
- Condensate drainage
- Coil condition
- Visible corrosion or deterioration
- Fault codes and diagnostic history where available
- The specific component you’ve been told has failed
Then we explain what we found.
That’s the product.
Information.
What If We Can’t Verify the Problem?
We’ll tell you.
This matters with intermittent problems.
Suppose another technician arrives while the system is actively failing.
Three hours later, we arrive and everything is operating normally.
We’re not going to declare:
“FIRST GUY WAS WRONG. AIR CONDITIONER HEALED ITSELF.”
Maybe not.
We may need additional information.
Fault history.
Measurements from the first visit.
Further testing.
Or sometimes simply monitoring the system until the problem occurs again.
There is nothing wrong with saying:
“We cannot reproduce or verify that failure right now.”
That’s considerably better than inventing certainty.
What If the First Company Was Obviously Wrong?
Then we’ll tell you what we found.
We’re still not interested in turning your service call into a Yelp cage match.
There are enough HVAC companies spending their time yelling about other HVAC companies.
We have air conditioners to fix.
If somebody diagnosed a $4,000 problem and we find a failed $300 component?
Wonderful.
We’ll show you.
Explain it.
Price the repair.
And move on with our lives.
The numbers can speak for themselves.
Why Are You Doing This for Free?
Because major HVAC decisions deserve verification.
And yes:
We’re a business.
Obviously we’d like the opportunity to earn your business.
We’re not operating a federally funded HVAC second-opinion institute.
But there’s a difference between:
Giving somebody an opportunity to experience how we diagnose equipment
and:
Using “free” as bait to get a salesperson into the house.
If our diagnosis earns your trust?
Great.
Maybe you call us for the repair.
Maybe you call us when the system eventually needs replacement.
Maybe you join a maintenance plan.
Maybe you never call us again.
That’s okay.
You still got useful information before making an expensive decision.
We can live with that.
When Should You Get a Second Opinion?
Not every HVAC repair needs three technicians and a congressional investigation.
If somebody tells you your capacitor failed and shows you the reading?
You probably don’t need to assemble a panel of experts.
But if you’re being asked to spend thousands of dollars, particularly for something like:
A compressor replacement.
Evaporator or condenser coil replacement.
Major refrigerant repair.
Large duct replacement.
Major inverter or communicating-system repair.
Or complete HVAC replacement?
Another opinion can make a lot of sense.
Especially if:
The diagnosis doesn’t make sense to you.
The explanation was vague.
You weren’t shown what failed.
The recommendation immediately jumped from repair to replacement.
The equipment is relatively young.
The quote is substantial.
Or you simply want confirmation before spending the money.
You don’t need a better reason than:
“I’d like someone else to check it.”
That’s enough.
Ask Three Questions Before Approving a Major HVAC Repair
You don’t need to know what superheat means.
You don’t need gauges.
You don’t need to watch 47 hours of HVAC YouTube.
Ask:
1. What’s actually wrong?
Not:
“It’s old.”
What failed?
2. How did you determine that?
What did you measure, test or observe?
3. What are my options?
Repair?
Monitor?
Replace?
Do nothing today?
What happens if we wait?
Those three questions will get you surprisingly far.
And Ask to See It
We love this one.
If the coil is leaking and the leak is visible or detectable?
Show me.
If the capacitor tested bad?
Show me the meter.
If the contactor is burned?
Show me.
If there’s corrosion?
Show me.
If the compressor is pulling abnormal current?
Show me the reading.
Obviously not every HVAC failure produces a beautiful photograph.
But whenever possible:
We want homeowners to see what we’re seeing.
You shouldn’t need blind faith to approve a $4,000 repair.
“But I Don’t Know What Those Numbers Mean.”
That’s our job.
A technician dumping twelve readings on you and walking away isn’t education.
We should be able to explain:
What we measured.
What we expected.
What the difference means.
And why it matters.
In normal human language.
If our explanation requires you to obtain an associate degree before approving the repair, we’ve probably overcomplicated it.
Sometimes the Best Second Opinion Is “Do Nothing Today”
This is another possibility.
Not every abnormality requires immediate intervention.
Maybe we find:
A component that’s aging but still operating.
Corrosion worth monitoring.
A measurement that’s not ideal but doesn’t justify invasive repair yet.
An older system where we’d rather watch the condition than spend heavily on preventive replacement of components.
Then our recommendation might simply be:
Monitor it.
We like monitoring things.
It’s extremely inexpensive.
Not particularly exciting.
Terrible for sales contests.
But occasionally excellent for homeowners.

And sometimes we’ll tell you:
Don’t do anything yet.
