Yes, Your Air Conditioner Is Allowed to Break Twice

We regret to inform you that your air conditioner is under no legal obligation to wait a reasonable amount of time between breakdowns.

We checked.

Apparently, there is no 30-day cooling-off period between HVAC failures.

Your capacitor can fail in Palm Coast in June.

Your blower motor can give up three weeks later in Ormond Beach.

Your drain line can back up on a perfectly good Tuesday afternoon in Port Orange.

And somewhere in New Smyrna Beach, a seven-year-old condenser is currently dissolving into the Atlantic Ocean while its owner insists:

“But it’s not that old.”

Meanwhile, somebody in St. Augustine just turned their thermostat down another two degrees because apparently 68° is going to happen if we simply believe hard enough.

Air conditioners are remarkably talented at disappointing people.

But when your A/C stops working shortly after it was repaired, there’s an important question we need to answer:

Is this the same problem — or a completely new one?

Because both happen.

“But You Were Just Here!”

We know.

And when your A/C stops working two weeks after we repaired it, we completely understand why your first thought might be:

“Didn’t you guys just fix this?”

Yep.

Maybe something went wrong with our repair.

Maybe our diagnosis was wrong.

Maybe the replacement part failed.

Maybe the new problem is related to the original problem.

Or…

Maybe your air conditioner broke twice.

We don’t get to choose the answer based on which one is more convenient for us.

We have to figure out what actually happened.

First: What’s It Doing — Or Not Doing?

This is where almost every Klein Cooling service call starts.

What’s it doing?

Or, just as importantly:

What’s it not doing?

Is the thermostat blank?

Is the indoor fan running?

Is the outdoor unit running?

Is it blowing warm air?

Did it stop suddenly?

Is there water around the air handler?

Is the outdoor unit humming?

Is something making a noise that definitely wasn’t making that noise yesterday?

And one particularly important question if we were recently there:

Is today’s symptom the same symptom you originally called us about?

That doesn’t diagnose the problem.

But it tells us where to start.

Then we follow the system.

Not our assumptions.

How Do We Know What Failed This Time?

Here it is again.

Our favorite question:

“How do we know?”

We don’t automatically assume it’s a callback because we were recently there.

And we don’t automatically walk through the door and announce:

“Different problem. That’ll be another $___.”

We troubleshoot the system.

We follow its sequence of operation.

We test the components involved.

We take measurements.

And then we determine what actually failed.

Depending on the complaint and the equipment, that might mean checking:

  • Line voltage
  • Control voltage
  • Capacitors
  • Motors
  • Thermostat signals
  • Safeties and float switches
  • Refrigerant pressures
  • Superheat and subcooling
  • Temperature split
  • Airflow
  • Static pressure
  • Amp draws
  • Control boards
  • Drainage
  • Manufacturer specifications
  • Other system-specific components

The tests change depending on the problem.

The rule doesn’t:

Test it. Prove it. Then recommend it.

No parts cannon.

So…Is It a Callback?

Maybe.

And if it is:

That’s our problem.

A true callback could mean several things.

Maybe the component we installed failed.

Maybe something wasn’t installed correctly.

Maybe we didn’t fully resolve the original problem.

Maybe our original diagnosis was wrong.

We’re HVAC technicians.

We’re not infallible.

We’ve gotten things wrong before.

We will get something wrong again.

That’s not an excuse to be careless.

It’s the reason we test.

And if we made a mistake, pretending your completely legitimate callback is somehow a mysterious new problem doesn’t make us better technicians.

It just makes us jerks.

Own it. Fix it. Learn from it.

That’s the standard.

But Sometimes It Really Is Something Else

Let’s say we come to your house in Palm Coast because the outdoor unit isn’t running.

We test the system and find a failed capacitor.

Not:

“Eh. These go bad a lot.”

We actually test it.

The capacitor is rated at 45 microfarads.

Our meter reads 2.

That’s not a hunch.

That’s a dead capacitor.

We show you the reading.

We give you the repair price.

You approve it.

We replace the capacitor.

The outdoor unit starts.

We verify operation.

Amp draws look good.

Temperatures look good.

The original problem is gone.

Three weeks later…

Your blower motor fails.

Those are two different failures.

The fact that they happened three weeks apart doesn’t magically connect them.

Your air conditioner contains a lot of components.

Unfortunately, they did not sign a gentleman’s agreement promising to fail one at a time with an appropriate grieving period between them.

A Second Failure Doesn’t Travel Backward Through Time

This is where homeowners understandably get frustrated.

“Well, if it’s broken again, I guess that wasn’t the problem.”

Not necessarily.

If we replaced a failed component, restored operation, verified the repair, and the system operated correctly afterward, a completely different failure three weeks later doesn’t travel backward through time and make the first component good again.

The first part can have been bad.

And now the second part can also be bad.

Two things can be true.

Air conditioners are remarkably talented that way.

But Two Failures CAN Be Related

Now it gets more interesting.

Just because two different components failed doesn’t necessarily mean the failures are unrelated.

Sometimes the first problem gives us a clue about the second.

Poor Airflow

Imagine a larger HVAC system was installed on ductwork that was never designed to move the amount of air that system needs.

The equipment may run.

The house may cool.

Everything may look fine to the homeowner.

But behind the scenes, the system could be operating against excessive static pressure.

That’s harder on equipment.

So if we repair one problem and also document an airflow issue, then a blower-related failure occurs later, we’re going to look very closely at whether those conditions contributed to it.

Electrical Problems

Voltage problems, loose electrical connections, failing capacitors, power events, and other electrical conditions can affect more than one component.

The capacitor we replaced last month and the motor that failed today may be completely unrelated.

Or they may not be.

We test.

Refrigeration Problems

Improper refrigerant conditions can affect system performance and place additional stress on the compressor.

If we’re seeing abnormal pressures, temperatures, superheat, or subcooling, we’re not going to ignore those readings simply because today’s immediate problem happens to be something else.

Drainage Problems

Maybe your thermostat went blank in Port Orange.

That doesn’t automatically mean you need a thermostat.

A backed-up condensate drain may have lifted a float switch and intentionally shut the system down to keep your ceiling from becoming an indoor water feature.

Clear the drain.

Reset the safety.

Verify operation.

Your thermostat may have been perfectly innocent the entire time.

Symptoms point us toward the problem.

Testing proves it.

What DOESN’T Prove It’s a Callback?

Timing.

That’s it.

“You were here two weeks ago.”

That’s important information.

It isn’t a diagnosis.

Neither is:

“It’s doing the same thing.”

Sometimes completely different failures create nearly identical symptoms.

“No cooling” can be caused by a lot of things.

“Thermostat is blank” can be caused by a lot of things.

“Outside unit isn’t running” can be caused by a lot of things.

That’s why the previous invoice isn’t our diagnostic tool.

The equipment is.

What DOES Prove It’s a Callback?

Evidence.

If we replaced a component and that component failed under our warranty?

Pretty straightforward.

If our wiring connection failed?

Ours.

If our repair caused the new problem?

Ours.

If additional testing shows that we misdiagnosed the original failure?

Ours.

If we didn’t perform the repair correctly?

Ours.

We’re not going to invent a philosophical argument about why it technically isn’t our responsibility.

We’re going to take care of it according to the applicable warranty and circumstances.

That’s part of standing behind our work.

Our Repair Warranty

Klein Cooling repairs include a 24-month parts and labor warranty, subject to the applicable warranty terms.

Eligible Klein Cooling maintenance plan members also receive our Lifetime Parts Warranty, subject to the terms of the applicable plan.

Why does that matter?

Because when we tell you:

“This is what failed.”

and you pay us to repair it, we’re putting something behind that recommendation.

We’re not simply selling you a part and disappearing.

“So Am I Paying Another Service Call?”

That depends on what we find.

If the issue falls under our warranty or is the result of something we did, we’re going to handle it accordingly.

If your system has experienced an entirely separate failure, that’s a new repair.

But we’re not going to decide which category it belongs in before troubleshooting the equipment.

That’s backwards.

First:

Find out what happened.

Then:

Figure out whose responsibility it is.

Not the other way around.

This Is Why Documentation Matters

This is one reason we’re borderline ridiculous about documenting HVAC systems.

Readings matter.

Photos matter.

Measurements matter.

The original complaint matters.

What we found matters.

What we repaired matters.

And what the system was doing when we left matters.

If your system fails again three weeks later, documentation gives us something considerably better than:

“I think it was running okay when we left.”

We want to know.

What was the capacitor reading?

What was the amp draw?

What was the temperature split?

What were the refrigerant readings?

What was the static pressure?

What did we observe?

What did we recommend?

What did we actually repair?

That information helps us determine whether we’re dealing with a callback, a related failure, or something completely new.

And whenever possible, we’ll show you those readings too.

Sometimes We Even Warn You Before It Happens

Occasionally, we’ll repair one problem and identify another condition that hasn’t failed yet.

That doesn’t mean we’re automatically recommending you replace everything we looked at.

It means we’re telling you what we found.

Maybe the blower motor is operating but drawing higher amperage than we’d like.

Maybe the duct system has excessive static pressure.

Maybe there’s significant corrosion on a condenser sitting near the ocean in Flagler Beach.

Maybe a motor is getting noisy.

Maybe we see evidence of an existing refrigerant leak.

Maybe your 12-year-old system in Ormond Beach is running perfectly fine today but looks like it spent those 12 years fighting Poseidon.

We document it.

We explain it.

Depending on the severity, we may recommend addressing it.

Or we may simply recommend monitoring it.

Then if that component fails six months later, nobody has to pretend the universe has personally betrayed us.

We knew it was coming.

And Sometimes We Don’t Know

This is important too.

Not every failure gives us a warning.

A component can test perfectly today and fail tomorrow.

That’s frustrating.

For you.

For us.

For everyone except the parts supplier.

HVAC diagnostics tell us what the equipment is doing while we’re testing it.

They don’t give us the supernatural ability to predict exactly when every component will fail.

If somebody invents that meter, we’ll buy two.

Same Problem in Palm Coast or St. Augustine

There’s another thing that doesn’t change because your A/C broke twice:

Maybe it’s our repair.

Maybe it’s related to the original problem.

Maybe it’s a completely separate failure.

Maybe we missed something.

Maybe a component that was operating normally three weeks ago decided today was its day.

We don’t know until we test it.

And that’s the point.

The Bottom Line

If your air conditioner stops working shortly after a repair, call us.

Don’t automatically assume it’s the same problem.

And don’t let us automatically assume it’s a different one.

Make us figure it out.

If our repair failed:

We’ll stand behind it.

If we made a mistake:

We’ll own it.

If the failures are related:

We’ll explain how.

And if your air conditioner genuinely managed to break twice in three weeks:

We’ll explain that too.

Probably while staring at it with you and saying:

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

Because sometimes that’s the technically correct response.

But after that?

We test.

Whether it’s the first breakdown, the second breakdown, or your air conditioner is working toward some kind of personal record:

We should be able to show you how we know.
