The Klein Trade Program

Create an Opportunity. Teach a Trade. Build a Career. Serve the Community.

The Klein Trade Program wasn’t originally supposed to be a trade program.

We weren’t sitting around one day thinking:

“You know what this HVAC company needs? A school.”

It was much simpler than that.

We wanted our guys to get better.

There are things that are incredibly difficult to properly teach during a normal HVAC workday.

When it’s 4:30 in the afternoon, you’re in a customer’s attic, everybody is hot, the homeowner wants their air conditioner back on, and there are still two calls on the schedule, that’s not exactly the ideal time for a 45-minute lesson on the refrigeration cycle.

So we started training on Saturdays.

Slow everything down.

Use the equipment in the shop.

Learn the theory behind what we’re doing in the field.

Take things apart.

Put them back together.

Use the tools.

Take measurements.

Ask questions.

Make mistakes when there isn’t a customer’s air conditioner depending on us getting everything right.

It started as training for our own team.

Then we looked around the shop and realized:

We Have Room for a Few More.

We’re already here.

The equipment is already here.

We’re already teaching.

There are some empty chairs.

Why not let a few more people learn with us?

And that’s essentially how the Klein Trade Program happened.


What Is the Klein Trade Program?

First, let’s make something very clear:

The Klein Trade Program is not a replacement for trade school.

It isn’t a replacement for an actual apprenticeship either.

And nobody becomes an experienced HVAC technician because they spent a few months hanging out with us on Saturdays.

There is no shortcut for experience.

What we’re trying to do is something different.

We’re essentially trying to cram the first year of an HVAC apprenticeship into about 30 weeks.

We do that through a mixture of:

Accredited online HVAC coursework and certifications.

In-person instruction.

Hands-on shop labs.

Supplemental course material.

Real HVAC equipment.

Real jobs and case studies.

On-the-job and field experience when appropriate.

Relevant industry certifications.

Safety training.

Customer communication.

Community service.

Soft skills and interview preparation.

And a whole lot of:

“Okay…why isn’t this thing working?”

Because that’s part of learning HVAC too.


Who Is This Program For?

Someone who wants an opportunity.

That’s really the answer.

There are people in our community who could become excellent tradespeople if somebody would just give them an opportunity to start.

Maybe traditional trade school isn’t an option.

Maybe they’re already working during the week.

Maybe they’re looking for a completely different career.

Maybe they’re young and aren’t sure what comes next.

Maybe nobody in their family works in the trades.

Maybe they’ve never touched an HVAC system in their life.

That’s okay.

We don’t expect you to know HVAC when you walk in.

We expect you to want to learn it.

Our first class made that very clear.

We stood in front of the HVAC system in our shop talking about compressors, condensers and evaporators like these guys had spent their entire lives thinking about air conditioners.

Blank stares.

Okay.

Back WAY up.

What does an air conditioner actually do?

Where’s the indoor unit?

Where’s the outdoor unit?

Why are there two of them?

Perfect.

That’s where we’ll start.

You don’t need to know the trade.

But you do need to:

Show up.

Do the coursework.

Come to class.

Participate.

Ask questions.

Work.

Make mistakes.

Try again.

And keep learning.

We’ll teach the HVAC part.


Why Did We Start It?

Originally?

To make our own people better.

That’s it.

We wanted our apprentices to understand the why behind the work they were doing.

Not just:

Go get this tool.

Carry this equipment.

Hold this flashlight.

We wanted them to understand what they were looking at.

Why we were taking a measurement.

Why the system was doing what it was doing.

Why something failed.

And how to prove it.

Saturday gave us the opportunity to actually teach those things.

Then we realized the same training could create an opportunity for somebody else.

And that became something we really cared about.


Creating an Opportunity That Might Not Otherwise Exist

Getting into a skilled trade isn’t always easy.

Look at an entry-level HVAC job posting.

It wants experience.

Okay.

How do you get experience if nobody will hire you without experience?

That’s the gap we’re trying to help close.

We have equipment.

We have tools.

We have an operating HVAC company.

We have people who know the trade.

We have a shop where somebody can make mistakes without doing it on a customer’s air conditioner.

And we’re already training.

If we can give a few additional people an opportunity they might not otherwise have:

Why wouldn’t we?


How Does the Program Work?

We’ve adapted the Klein Trade Program around structured training provided through SkillCat, then intertwined it with our own hands-on labs, in-person instruction, supplemental course material, field experience and real-world HVAC lessons.

The easiest way to explain it is:

Learn It

Students receive one year of access to SkillCat as part of the program.

SkillCat provides structured HVAC course material, quizzes, exams and certifications that form the educational foundation we’re building from.

We use that curriculum as our roadmap.

But we don’t simply log into an online course on Saturday and call that HVAC training.

That’s where our part begins.


Practice It

We take the subjects being taught and turn them into hands-on classes and labs.

Learning electrical troubleshooting?

We’ll build a complete circuit.

Learning brazing?

Here’s some copper and a torch.

Learning airflow?

We’re cutting ductboard, working with sheet metal and measuring static pressure.

Learning refrigeration?

Let’s put gauges on the operating shop system.

Learning blower motors?

Let’s replace one.

Learning superheat and subcooling?

Let’s replace an evaporator coil, flow nitrogen, pressure test it, evacuate it, charge the system and verify operation.

Learning preventative maintenance?

Perform one.

That’s how we try to connect the coursework with the trade itself.


Experience It

Then there’s the part that can’t be completely recreated in any classroom:

Real HVAC work.

We bring real jobs into class constantly.

Sometimes it’s:

“Here’s something we saw this week.”

Sometimes it’s:

“Here’s a weird service call.”

Sometimes it’s:

“Here’s an interaction we had with a customer.”

And sometimes it’s:

“Okay, we screwed this one up. Let’s talk about what happened.”

Those become lessons too.

What did we see?

What did we think?

What did we measure?

What did we do?

What went right?

What went wrong?

What would we do differently next time?

Because eventually that’s exactly how you get better at this trade.

And occasionally an opportunity comes along where the students can experience the field themselves.

Then?

FIELD TRIP!

Who Teaches the Program?

The in-person Klein Trade Program classes are taught by Kevin Klein, owner of Klein Cooling, with our apprentices helping during the hands-on portions of class.

This isn’t something we’ve outsourced to somebody who shows up on Saturday with a PowerPoint.

We’re HVAC contractors teaching HVAC.

We’re working on this equipment during the week.

We’re diagnosing systems.

We’re installing them.

We’re making repairs.

We’re dealing with customers.

We’re making decisions.

And yes:

We’re making mistakes too.

That means Friday’s job occasionally becomes Saturday’s lesson.

And some of those lessons aren’t going to be found on an exam.


Why Only 5–6 Students?

We intentionally keep the Klein Trade Program small.

Usually around:

5–6 students.

Because once you get to 6–7…

Apparently everything falls apart.

Moving on.

The actual reason is simple:

We want to teach people individually.

If we’re teaching brazing, we don’t want 25 people watching one person braze.

You should have a torch in your hand.

If we’re teaching electrical troubleshooting?

You should have a meter.

If we’re teaching gauges?

Take the measurements yourself.

If you’re struggling with something?

We can stop.

Back up.

Explain it differently.

Try it again.

And sometimes realize:

Maybe I explained that terribly.

Then I’ll try again too.

We’re not trying to put as many people through the program as possible.

We’re trying to give a few people a really good opportunity.


What Does β€œFree” Actually Mean?

When we say the Klein Trade Program is free:

We mean free.

Our students haven’t paid a dime.

There isn’t an enrollment fee.

There isn’t a materials fee.

There isn’t a certification fee waiting at the end.

There isn’t a bill for the copper you just turned into modern art while learning how to braze.

Klein Cooling covers the program.

That includes:

  • NATE exams and certifications included in the program
  • EPA Section 608 training and certification

Respect the other students.

Be willing to screw something up.

The Klein Trade Program Curriculum

The exact calendar can change from one class to another.

The progression is what matters.

We begin with somebody who may know absolutely nothing about HVAC and gradually move from fundamentals into theory, hands-on work, Job Ready training, certifications and preparation for employment.


Week 1 β€” NATE Ready-to-Work & Introduction to HVAC

For some students, this is literally their first real introduction to an air-conditioning system.

We start basic.

Very basic.

Major components.

Basic terminology.

What an air conditioner actually does.

Basic safety.

Students work through the Ready-to-Work material and take the exam.

Our first class started with those blank stares we mentioned earlier.

By the end?

They all passed.


Week 2 β€” Introduction to HVAC & Key Hand Tools

We begin the HVAC Theory curriculum.

Students get another look at the operating shop system, and we break out the tools.

Meters.

Drivers.

Wrenches.

Pliers.

Cutters.

Temperature probes.

And everything else technicians eventually scatter throughout the inside of a service van.

Week 3 β€” Brazing & Soldering

Now we get out the torches.

Copper preparation.

Cleaning.

Fitting.

Heat control.

Brazing.

Soldering.

Safety.

Then everybody gets to actually do it.

And yes:

You can take home what you made.


Week 4 β€” Multimeters & Wiring

Electrical theory begins becoming something we can actually measure.

Voltage.

Resistance.

Continuity.

Basic circuits.

Transformers.

Thermostats.

HVAC wiring.

And learning to safely use one of the most important tools a technician will ever own.


Week 5 β€” Electrical Troubleshooting

Now we put it together.

Students create a wiring diagram and work in teams to build an operating circuit using:

A disconnect.

240 volts.

A transformer.

24-volt controls.

A thermostat.

A float switch.

A capacitor.

A motor.

And wire.

Then:

Make the fan run.

Suddenly electrical theory isn’t just lines on a page.


Week 6 β€” Refrigeration 101

Pressure.

Temperature.

Heat transfer.

Refrigerant states.

The fundamentals of mechanical refrigeration.

Before somebody can diagnose a refrigeration system, they need to understand what the refrigerant is actually doing.

This is where that starts.


Week 7 β€” The Refrigeration Cycle

Compression.

Condensation.

Metering.

Evaporation.

Then we take the lesson to the operating shop system.

Connect the gauges.

Take temperatures.

Look at pressures.

And watch the refrigeration cycle we’ve been discussing actually happen.


Week 8 β€” Refrigeration Equipment

Now we go deeper into the components.

Compressors.

Condensers.

Evaporators.

Metering devices.

Refrigeration controls.

And the equipment that makes the refrigeration cycle possible.


Week 9 β€” Heating Fundamentals

Yes.

Heating.

In Florida.

It’s still HVAC.

We cover the fundamentals so students understand what happens when Florida decides to be cold for three days.


Week 10 β€” Heating Systems

We continue into heating equipment and system operation.

We also installed an HVAC system that had been removed from a customer’s home in our shop so students could continue working on an actual complete system.

That’s our training system.

And we’re going to do terrible things to it over the coming months.

Week 11 β€” Airflow Systems

Ductboard.

Sheet metal.

Flex duct.

Cutting.

Fabrication.

Sealing.

Taping.

Airflow.

Static pressure.

Students get hands-on experience working with the materials and measuring what the blower is actually working against.

Because sooner or later every HVAC technician needs to learn:

Refrigerant cannot fix bad airflow.


Week 12 β€” Commercial HVAC

An introduction to the commercial side of the trade.

Commercial equipment.

Three-phase electrical.

Ventilation.

Controls.

Larger systems.

Different applications.

Same basic physics.


Week 13 β€” Blower Motors & FIELD TRIP!

This week was lab-heavy.

Remove a blower motor.

Identify it.

Replace it.

Wire it.

Test it.

Measure operation.

Then we happened to have a Community Cares customer who actually needed a blower motor.

Well…

FIELD TRIP!

Grab the tools.

Now the lesson is happening in an actual customer’s home.

Week 14 β€” Superheat, Subcooling & Evaporator Coil Replacement

Now we begin phasing into Job Ready training.

Students learn superheat and subcooling.

Then we replace the evaporator coil in the shop system.

Pump down.

Remove the old coil.

Install the new one.

Flow nitrogen while brazing.

Pressure test.

Evacuate.

Measure microns.

Charge as necessary.

Start the system.

Take readings.

Test operation.

Prove the repair worked.


Week 15 β€” Electrical Job Ready Training

Meters.

Electrical troubleshooting.

Fuses.

Capacitors.

Thermostats.

Then the lab:

Condenser fan motor replacement.

Capacitor replacement.

Contactor replacement.

Thermostat replacement.

We’ve moved beyond:

“What’s a capacitor?”

Now it’s:

“Is it bad? Prove it.”


Week 16 β€” Safety & Customer Interaction

This week includes self-study focused on two things that can make or break a technician:

Safety and people.

Electrical safety.

Heat safety.

Refrigerant safety.

Ladders.

Attics.

Protecting property.

Talking to homeowners.

Explaining findings.

Professionalism.

And learning that:

“I don’t know. Let me verify that.”

is considerably better than confidently making something up.


Week 17 β€” Split Systems, Nameplates & Tools

Now we’re looking at HVAC equipment as a complete system.

Indoor equipment.

Outdoor equipment.

Refrigerant lines.

Controls.

Nameplates.

Model numbers.

Serial numbers.

Manufacturer specifications.

And the tools needed to properly evaluate the equipment.

Before you diagnose anything:

Know what you’re working on.


Week 18 β€” Preventative Maintenance & Documentation

Now we put a lot of the previous lessons together.

Students perform a complete preventative maintenance on the shop system and document the results.

Our methodology follows:

We’re not looking for:

“Unit good.”

Week 19 β€” Gauges, Low-Loss Fittings & System Performance

Now we continue deeper into refrigeration measurements.

Gauges.

Low-loss fittings.

Air temperatures.

Superheat.

Subcooling.

System performance.

But the lesson isn’t simply:

“What are the numbers?”

It’s becoming:

“What are the numbers telling you?”


Week 20 β€” Trades, Jobsite & Layout Math

Yep.

Math.

Sorry.

Layouts.

Materials.

Jobsite calculations.

Conversions.

The kind of math you actually need when you’re building, installing and repairing things.


Week 21 β€” Residential Systems, Refrigeration & Career Preparation

We continue through Job Ready coursework covering residential systems, refrigerant, refrigeration components, confined spaces and career preparation.

At this point, the individual subjects are increasingly becoming one complete picture of what working in the field actually looks like.


Week 22 β€” Preventative Maintenance Procedures

We return to maintenance with a deeper look at:

Condensers.

Blowers.

Evaporators.

Drains.

Float switches.

Inspection.

Cleaning.

Testing.

Documentation.

Why teach maintenance again?

Because repetition matters.

And maintenance gives a developing technician the opportunity to evaluate a complete operating system instead of only seeing equipment after something has already failed.


Week 23 β€” Ductless Systems & Heating

Ductless equipment.

Mini-splits.

Heating operation.

Hands-on training with the equipment.

And eventually the students may encounter one of our more advanced A/C University lessons:

Back to working with our hands.

As students get closer to entering the workforce, the technical skills aren’t enough.

EPA Section 608 Training & Certification

Now we move into another major part of the program.

Students prepare for the EPA Section 608 certification.

Training covers:

Core.

Type I.

Type II.

Type III.

Review.

And then:

The certification exam.

NATE Job Ready Certification

Students also work toward the NATE Job Ready certification.

Think about the progression.

At the beginning:

“Which one is the condenser?”

Now:

Electrical.

Refrigeration.

Airflow.

Heating.

Controls.

Motors.

Gauges.

Superheat.

Subcooling.

Brazing.

Evacuation.

Maintenance.

Customer interaction.

Troubleshooting.

Then:

Sit for the Job Ready exam.

OSHA 10

The program also includes OSHA 10 Construction Safety training.

Safety isn’t something we tack onto one Saturday and forget.

Students will eventually be working around:

Electricity.

Ladders.

Roofs.

Attics.

Torches.

Refrigerants.

Tools.

Construction environments.

And Florida heat.

Know how to work safely.

What 30 Weeks Cannot Do

This is important enough to say twice:

Thirty weeks does not make somebody an experienced HVAC technician.

There is no shortcut for field experience.

You need to see hundreds of systems.

Different manufacturers.

Different houses.

Different installations.

Weird wiring.

Bad ductwork.

Intermittent problems.

Equipment you’ve never seen.

Repairs that don’t go according to plan.

Customers.

Callbacks.

Mistakes.

Attics.

And Florida in August.

That takes time.

The Klein Trade Program isn’t designed to replace that experience.

It’s designed to prepare somebody for it.

Instead of beginning an apprenticeship knowing absolutely nothing, our goal is for a graduate to enter the field with a legitimate foundation.

Now an experienced technician has something to build on.


Making Mistakes Is Part of the Program

Wire something wrong?

Okay.

Why didn’t it work?

Bad braze?

Cut it out.

Do it again.

Can’t get the vacuum down?

Why?

Wrong measurement?

Figure out what happened.

Forgot a tool?

You’ll remember it next time.

Probably.

We’re not trying to create students who are terrified of making mistakes.

The shop is exactly where we want many of those mistakes to happen.

Experienced technicians make mistakes too.

We certainly do.

The important part is learning to:

Recognize it.

Own it.

Understand it.

Correct it.

And learn from it.

That’s how you get better.


Learn a Trade. Then Use It to Serve.

There’s another part of the Klein Trade Program that’s just as important to us as learning HVAC.

We’re teaching people a trade. We’re also teaching them to serve their community with it.

A skilled trade gives somebody the ability to make a living.

That’s important.

It can provide a career.

Support a family.

Create stability.

Open opportunities.

But learning a trade also gives you something else:

The ability to help somebody in a way you couldn’t before.

An elderly homeowner without air conditioning.

A family that can’t afford an unexpected repair.

Someone going through a difficult time.

A local organization trying to serve others.

Sometimes what they need is exactly what you know how to do.

Once you have a skill, you have something valuable you can give besides money.

You can give your skill.


That’s Where Community Cares Comes In

We don’t want to stand in front of a class and tell students:

“Someday you should use your skills to help people.”

We can show them.

Our Community Cares program gives us opportunities to help people in our community with HVAC needs when they may not otherwise be able to afford the work.

And when an appropriate Community Cares job lines up with something we’re teaching?

We bring the students when we can.

That’s exactly what happened with the blower motor.

They learned about blower motors.

They replaced one in the shop.

Then a Community Cares customer actually needed one.

FIELD TRIP!

But suddenly the lesson wasn’t just about a motor.

There was a real person on the other end of the repair.

Now:

Protect their home.

Talk to them.

Treat them with respect.

Perform the repair correctly.

Test your work.

Clean up.

Leave their home better than you found it.

The shop can teach somebody how to replace a blower motor.

Serving somebody teaches them why knowing how matters.


Why Service Matters to Us

Our faith is part of who we are.

We’re Christians.

And following Jesus means more to us than putting a Bible verse on a website or saying we’re a Christian-owned company.

It should affect what we actually do.

Jesus taught us to love our neighbors and serve others.

We’ve been given knowledge.

We’ve been given tools.

We’ve been given equipment.

We’ve been given a shop.

We’ve been given a business.

And we’ve been given the ability to teach somebody else what we know.

We believe we’re supposed to do something with that.

The Klein Trade Program is one way we’re trying.

Community Cares is another.

And sometimes the two come together beautifully.

A student gets experience.

A neighbor gets help.

And hopefully the student learns something that lasts much longer than the repair:

Your trade can become a way to serve somebody.


Your Skill Has Value Beyond Your Paycheck

We want our graduates to make money.

Absolutely.

This is a career.

Your knowledge has value.

Your labor has value.

Your experience has value.

We want people to build careers, earn good money, support their families and create better lives for themselves.

But that’s not the only value your skill has.

Sometimes somebody needs what you know how to do.

And when you’re in a position to help?

Help.

Community Cares gives our students an opportunity to see that firsthand.


What Does Success Look Like?

Success isn’t:

“Thirty weeks later, we created a master HVAC technician.”

No.

Success looks more like this:

Someone walks through our door knowing almost nothing about HVAC.

They spend the next 30 weeks learning.

They complete structured coursework.

They pass quizzes and exams.

They earn relevant certifications.

They use meters.

They use gauges.

They braze.

They build circuits.

They replace components.

They work on actual HVAC equipment.

They learn how to take measurements instead of guessing.

They learn how to document their work.

They interact with customers.

They participate in Community Cares opportunities.

They make mistakes.

They learn from them.

And at the end?

They’re prepared to sit down with an HVAC contractor and compete for an entry-level opportunity in the trade.

That’s success.


The Program Doesn’t End With β€œCongratulations”

We don’t want to spend months preparing somebody and then finish with:

“Good luck finding a job!”

We can’t hire everybody.

And we’re not trying to.

That’s why we’re working with other local HVAC companies to create opportunities for successful graduates to interview.

Maybe somebody becomes a Klein Cooling apprentice.

Great.

Maybe somebody goes to work for another good local contractor.

Also great.

We’re trying to build:

OPPORTUNITY β†’ TRAINING β†’ EXPERIENCE β†’ CERTIFICATION β†’ INTERVIEW β†’ CAREER

We can’t guarantee anybody a job.

The student still has to earn the opportunity.

But we can help build the bridge.


Then the Real Apprenticeship Continues

When somebody finishes the Klein Trade Program, we’re not saying:

“Congratulations. You’re an HVAC technician.”

We’re saying:

“You’ve built a foundation. Now go get experience.”

Work beside experienced technicians.

Ask questions.

See hundreds of systems.

Make more mistakes.

Learn different manufacturers.

Learn different buildings.

Learn what the textbook didn’t prepare you for.

Keep taking classes.

Keep earning certifications.

Keep getting better.

The program is the beginning.

Not the finish line.

Week 1:

“What’s that thing?”

Thirty-ish weeks later:

Meters.

Gauges.

Electrical.

Refrigeration.

Airflow.

Brazing.

Evacuation.

Motors.

Controls.

Maintenance.

Certifications.

Customer interactions.

Community service.

And hopefully:

An opportunity.


Where Does the Klein Trade Program Happen?

Most training happens at the Klein Cooling shop in Bunnell, Florida.

That’s where we can slow down.

Take equipment apart.

Ask questions.

Repeat procedures.

Break things.

Fix them.

And learn without a homeowner standing behind us wondering why six people are staring at their air conditioner.

When appropriate, we also incorporate real field experiences and Community Cares service opportunities.


When Does the Program Meet?

The program is primarily built around:

Saturday training.

Students also complete online coursework outside of the Saturday classes.

Exact schedules can change from one group to another.

The progression matters more than the exact calendar.

Fundamentals.

Theory.

Hands-on work.

Complete procedures.

Job Ready training.

Certifications.

Employment opportunities.

And continued apprenticeship in the field.


Where We Hope This Goes

This started because:

We wanted our guys to get better.

Then we realized:

We have room for a few more.

Those few empty chairs changed what this could become.

Maybe one goes to somebody who never considered HVAC as a career.

Maybe they discover they’re really good at it.

Maybe they earn their certifications.

Maybe we hire them.

Maybe another local company hires them.

Maybe five years from now they’re the experienced technician with a brand-new apprentice sitting beside them.

And maybe one day they encounter somebody who genuinely needs help.

They remember those Community Cares jobs.

They remember what they were taught.

And they help.

That’s the cycle we’d love to create.


Create an Opportunity. Teach a Trade. Build a Career. Serve the Community.

That’s the Klein Trade Program.

We’re not replacing trade school.

We’re not pretending 30 weeks replaces years in the field.

We’re not promising anybody a job.

We’re not promising to turn somebody into an experienced technician.

We’re creating an opportunity to begin.

Take someone who wants to learn.

Remove the financial barrier.

Give them access to structured HVAC education.

Put tools in their hands.

Put them in front of real equipment.

Teach them.

Let them make mistakes.

Teach them why.

Give them opportunities to serve.

Help them earn meaningful certifications.

Put them in front of employers.

Then send them into the trade with a foundation somebody can build on.

And hopefully teach them one other thing along the way:

The skills God gives us aren’t only for ourselves.

Use them to build a life.

Use them to support your family.

Use them to become excellent at what you do.

And when you get the opportunity:

Use them to serve somebody else.

That’s what we’re trying to build.
