Welcome to Week 16 of the Klein Trade Program.

This week looked a little different.

Self-study week.

No big Saturday lab.

No evaporator coil coming apart.

No blower motor to replace.

No copper to braze.

No intentionally broken equipment waiting in the shop.

The HVAC Theory Certificate Program topics for the week were:

Safety

and

Customer Interactions.

At first glance, those might sound like the chapters you hurry through so you can get back to:

Compressors.

Refrigeration.

Electrical troubleshooting.

You know.

The real HVAC stuff.

Except…

This is the real HVAC stuff.

You can be the greatest technician in Florida.

If you hurt yourself, damage someone’s home, scare the customer, don’t communicate, leave a mess and drive through their flower bed on the way out?

We’ve got a problem.

Welcome to Week 16.


The Technical Repair Is Only Part of the Job

We’ve spent most of this program learning how HVAC equipment works.

That’s obviously important.

But eventually you’re going to leave the training shop.

You’re going to pull into somebody’s driveway.

And now you’re not just dealing with equipment.

You’re dealing with:

People.

People who are hot.

People who are frustrated.

People who may have already paid somebody else to fix the problem.

People who don’t understand HVAC.

People who understand way more about HVAC than you expected.

People who are worried about money.

People who have dogs.

People who have kids.

People who work from home.

People who are watching everything you do.

And people who are trusting you inside their house.

Being a technician means learning how to handle both sides of the job.


Part One: Safety

Let’s start with the obvious one.

HVAC can hurt you.

We’re working around:

240-volt electrical circuits.

High-pressure refrigerant.

Hot torches.

Sharp sheet metal.

Rotating equipment.

Heavy equipment.

Ladders.

Attics.

Roofs.

Chemicals.

Extreme heat.

And occasionally all of those things before lunch.

Safety isn’t something we add after learning HVAC.

Safety is how we do HVAC.


Electricity Doesn’t Care How Experienced You Are

We’ve spent a lot of time working with electrical systems.

That’s because HVAC technicians interact with electricity constantly.

And one of the worst habits a new technician can develop is becoming casual around it.

Verify power.

Don’t assume.

Don’t trust that the disconnect was pulled correctly.

Don’t assume because the thermostat is off that the equipment isn’t energized.

Don’t assume the breaker labeled AIR CONDITIONER actually controls the air conditioner.

People do weird things.

Houses do weird things.

Previous technicians do weird things.

Use your meter.

Verify.


Turn It Off. Then Prove It’s Off.

This should become automatic.

Disconnect power.

Then:

Verify absence of voltage where appropriate before beginning work.

That second part matters.

The disconnect handle being in your hand doesn’t prove every circuit you’re about to touch is dead.

There may be multiple power sources.

Control voltage may still be present.

Accessories may have separate circuits.

Understand the equipment.

Then verify.


Capacitors Deserve Respect Too

We’ve been testing and replacing capacitors.

Remember:

A capacitor is designed to store electrical energy.

Treat it accordingly.

Use proper procedures.

Understand what you’re touching.

Don’t get casual because you’ve changed 500 of them.

The component doesn’t know this is your 501st.

Refrigerant Is Under Pressure

Refrigeration systems aren’t just copper tubes full of magic cooling juice.

They’re pressurized systems.

That means technicians need to use:

Appropriate tools.

Proper hoses.

Proper fittings.

Eye protection.

Gloves where appropriate.

Correct recovery and handling procedures.

And good judgment.

Don’t loosen something because:

“I think all the pressure is out.”

Verify.

There seems to be a theme developing.


Brazing Changes the Safety Conversation

Remember Week 3?

Torches!

Everybody’s favorite lab.

😂

Now put that torch in:

An attic.

A garage.

A closet.

Near insulation.

Near wood framing.

Near wires.

Near drain pans.

Near walls.

Near someone’s belongings.

Suddenly brazing isn’t just:

Can you make a good joint?

It’s:

Can you make a good joint without burning the customer’s house down?

Slightly more important.

Prepare the area.

Use appropriate fire protection.

Keep extinguishing equipment available.

Inspect the area when you’re finished.

Think about what’s on the other side of what you’re heating.


The Attic Is Trying to Kill You

Okay.

Maybe that’s dramatic.

But only slightly.

Florida attic.

August.

Middle of the afternoon.

You’re crawling across trusses.

It’s insanely hot.

There’s insulation everywhere.

You’re carrying tools.

There’s a nail sticking through the roof deck approximately every six inches.

One wrong step and you’re introducing yourself to the customer through their ceiling.

Attic safety matters.

Hydration matters.

Heat awareness matters.

Where you step matters.

How long you stay up there matters.

Don’t try to prove how tough you are.

Come back down when you need to.


The Ceiling Is Not a Floor

This deserves its own section.

Step on:

STRUCTURE.

Not drywall.

Not insulation.

Not:

“That looks pretty solid.”

If you don’t know where you’re stepping?

Figure it out before putting your full weight there.

Falling through a customer’s ceiling is bad for several reasons.

Safety is probably number one.

But the conversation downstairs afterward isn’t going to be particularly fun either.


Ladders

Inspect them.

Set them correctly.

Use them correctly.

Don’t create some improvised ladder arrangement because:

“I’ll only be up there for a second.”

Those are famous last words in every trade.

If you need the correct ladder, get the correct ladder.

The service call can wait another five minutes.


Sheet Metal

Week 11 already taught us this.

Sheet metal is sharp.

Wear appropriate protection.

Use the right tools.

Pay attention.

And don’t leave sharp scraps lying around where somebody else can find them with their hand, knee or foot.

Clean as you go.

That’s safety too.


Heat Safety Is Real HVAC Safety in Florida

This one matters tremendously for the work we’re preparing these students to do.

Florida heat is not a joke.

Especially:

Attics.

Roofs.

Mechanical rooms.

Outdoor equipment in direct sunlight.

Drink water.

Take breaks.

Pay attention to yourself.

Pay attention to the person working with you.

Confusion, dizziness and other signs of heat illness aren’t:

“Just push through it.”

Get out of the heat.

The air conditioner can wait.


Part Two: Customer Interactions

Now we get to something that might be just as important to a technician’s career.

How do you act in somebody’s home?

This is where technical training often doesn’t spend enough time.

You aren’t servicing equipment in a laboratory.

You’re entering someone’s personal space.

That’s a privilege.

Act accordingly.


The Customer Is Probably Having a Worse Day Than You

Think about why you’re there.

Their air conditioner stopped working.

It’s August.

The house is 84°F.

They’re uncomfortable.

Their kids are complaining.

The dog is panting.

They don’t know whether this is going to cost:

$200

or

$12,000.

And then you arrive.

Keep that perspective.

You’re entering somebody else’s problem.

Don’t make it worse.


Introduce Yourself

This shouldn’t need a section.

But here we are.

Knock.

Step back from the door.

Introduce yourself.

Tell them why you’re there.

Ask them what’s happening.

And then:

Listen.

The customer may give you extremely useful diagnostic information.

When did it start?

Has it happened before?

Does it happen at certain times?

Did anything change?

Did another company work on it?

What did they notice?

Customer conversation is part of diagnosis.


Don’t Make the Customer Feel Stupid

This is huge.

The customer says:

“I think it needs Freon.”

You determine the drain is clogged.

Don’t respond like:

“LOL. That’s not even remotely how this works.”

They don’t work in HVAC.

You do.

Explain what you found.

Simple.

Respectful.

No condescension.

No unnecessary technical flexing.

Your job isn’t to prove how much more you know about air conditioners than the homeowner.

They already assumed that when they called you.


Don’t Trash the Last Technician

You’re going to see questionable work.

Sometimes very questionable work.

😂

But you probably don’t know the entire story.

Maybe the previous technician made a mistake.

Maybe the customer declined part of the repair.

Maybe equipment changed later.

Maybe there’s context you don’t have.

Explain what you see.

Explain what needs to happen.

Document it.

But:

You don’t need to build yourself up by tearing another technician down.

Do good work.

Let that speak for itself.


Say “I Don’t Know”

This might be one of the most important things we teach.

You’re going to encounter something you don’t understand.

Maybe it’s unfamiliar equipment.

Maybe the readings don’t make sense.

Maybe you’ve never seen the control.

Maybe you need to call someone.

Say:

“I want to verify that before I give you an answer.”

That’s a perfectly good answer.

You don’t have to make something up because you’re standing in front of the customer.

A technician who knows when to stop and verify is considerably more valuable than one who confidently invents an answer.


Explain Before You Do

Before performing a repair:

Explain what you found.

Explain what you’re recommending.

Explain the price.

Answer questions.

Then get authorization.

This shouldn’t be complicated.

The customer deserves to know what you’re doing to their equipment and what it’s going to cost before you do it.

No surprises.

That’s just good business.


You’re a Technician, Not a “Comfort Advisor”

We’re going to keep this simple.

If you’re there to diagnose an HVAC system:

Diagnose the HVAC system.

If it can reasonably be repaired, explain the repair.

If replacement makes sense, explain why.

If both options are reasonable, give the customer both options.

You don’t need a fake title.

You don’t need a psychological sales script.

You don’t need to manufacture urgency.

You need to understand HVAC and communicate clearly.

That’s enough.


Stuff That Isn’t in the Manual

The Customer Will Watch You

Sometimes from six inches away.

😂

You’re trying to check voltage.

They’re right there.

You’re checking the capacitor.

Still there.

You walk outside.

They follow you.

You’re at the condenser.

They’re standing beside you.

That’s okay.

It’s their house.

It’s their equipment.

If you need space to work safely, politely ask for it.

Otherwise?

Talk to them.

Explain what you’re doing if they’re interested.

You might actually teach somebody something.


Stuff That Isn’t in the Manual

The Dog Lives There. You Don’t.

Ask before interacting with pets.

Some dogs are friendly.

Some are nervous.

Some don’t like strangers.

Some absolutely love HVAC technicians and will attempt to climb directly into your tool bag.

Don’t assume.

Let the homeowner manage their pet.

And don’t leave gates open.

That last one matters.


Stuff That Isn’t in the Manual

Close the Damn Door

Florida.

August.

Air conditioner isn’t working.

Customer’s house is already hot.

You walk through the front door.

Then leave it wide open while you make four trips to the van.

😂

No.

Close the door.

Same with garage access where appropriate.

Respect the conditioned space.

Respect the home.

Small things matter.


Stuff That Isn’t in the Manual

Don’t Leave Without Looking Behind You

Before you leave:

Look around.

Tools?

Screws?

Wire pieces?

Old capacitor?

Packaging?

Dirty fingerprints?

Drop cloth?

Thermostat set correctly?

Panels installed?

Disconnect back in?

Gate closed?

Lights?

Door?

Take 30 seconds.

That final look will save you an unbelievable number of stupid callbacks and embarrassing phone calls.


Customer Service Isn’t Being Fake

This is important.

Customer interaction doesn’t mean:

Fake smile.

Fake personality.

Fake enthusiasm.

Scripted sales language.

You don’t need to become somebody else.

Be professional.

Be respectful.

Be clear.

Be patient.

Do what you said you’d do.

Admit when you don’t know.

Clean up after yourself.

Treat the customer’s home like it matters.

That’s customer service.


Safety and Customer Service Are Connected

Here’s something interesting about these two topics being paired together.

They actually belong together.

A technician who works safely is protecting:

Themselves.

Their coworkers.

The customer.

The customer’s property.

A technician who communicates well helps the customer understand what’s happening and prevents misunderstandings.

Both are really about the same thing:

Professionalism.

Knowing how to fix the equipment is only one piece of being a professional HVAC technician.


What Should a Student Know After Week 16?

This was self-study week.

No big lab.

No component replacement.

But the material matters.

By the end of Week 16, students should understand the importance of:

  • Verifying electrical power before working
  • Treating capacitors and energized circuits appropriately
  • Working safely around pressurized refrigerant
  • Brazing and hot-work safety
  • Ladder safety
  • Attic safety
  • Sheet-metal safety
  • Florida heat awareness
  • Protecting customer property
  • Introducing themselves professionally
  • Listening to the customer
  • Explaining findings clearly
  • Avoiding condescending technical language
  • Not attacking previous technicians
  • Admitting when they need to verify something
  • Getting authorization before repairs
  • Respecting pets and property
  • Cleaning the work area
  • Performing a final check before leaving

Most importantly:

Being good at HVAC isn’t enough.

You have to be someone people can trust to work safely inside their home.


The Technician We’re Trying to Build

We’re not trying to create somebody who can simply change a capacitor.

You can teach somebody how to physically replace a capacitor pretty quickly.

We’re trying to develop technicians who can:

Arrive professionally.

Listen.

Diagnose.

Measure.

Explain.

Repair.

Test.

Clean.

Document.

Respect the customer.

Work safely.

And leave knowing the job was done correctly.

That’s considerably harder.

And considerably more valuable.

Week 16 didn’t have the coolest lab.

Nobody got to fire up the torch.

Nobody replaced a compressor.

Nobody got to deliberately break our training equipment.

But this lesson may keep somebody from getting hurt.

And it may be the difference between a customer saying:

“The AC guy fixed it.”

and:

“That’s our HVAC company.”

That’s worth a Saturday.

One week at a time.
