Welcome to Week 2 of the Klein Trade Program.

Last time we were together, these guys walked into the shop knowing very little about air conditioning.

We gave them a crash course in HVAC, walked around the system in our shop, introduced a whole bunch of terminology, and then had them take the NATE Ready-to-Work exam.

Everybody passed.

Not bad for Day One.

But Week 1 was the introduction.

This week?

We start actually building the foundation.

Welcome to HVAC Theory.


Okay… “Week 2” Was a Month Later

You’ll notice something immediately if you’re following along.

Week 1 was March 14.

Week 2 was April 18.

Apparently our definition of “weekly” was a little loose at the beginning.

😂

That’s okay.

The Klein Trade Program didn’t begin as a website curriculum.

It began as us getting together and teaching people HVAC.

We’re documenting it now so future students — and anybody else who wants to learn with us — can follow the same progression.

April 18 was when we began the next phase:

The HVAC Theory Certificate Program.


This Week’s Classes

Our two main subjects for Week 2 were:

Introduction to HVAC

and

Key Hand Tools

The first course continued building on the basic HVAC knowledge we introduced during NATE Ready-to-Work.

The second involved me breaking out a whole bunch of tools and starting with the basics:

What’s this called?

What does it do?

Why do we carry it?

When would you use it?

Because eventually we’re going to expect these guys to walk into a real job and know what to grab.

Right now?

We’re starting with:

“This is a pair of wire strippers.”

And that’s perfectly fine.

Everybody starts somewhere.


Back to the Shop System

We went back to the HVAC system in our shop.

This time, everybody knew a little more than they did the first time we stood around it.

Still basic.

Still introductory.

But we’re beginning to connect the pieces.

Indoor equipment.

Outdoor equipment.

Airflow.

Refrigerant lines.

Condensate drain.

Electrical.

Thermostat.

Ductwork.

Instead of treating each thing as an isolated component, we’re beginning to understand something fundamental:

This is a system.

A problem in one area can affect another.

Poor airflow can create symptoms that look like a refrigeration problem.

An electrical problem can prevent perfectly good mechanical equipment from operating.

A clogged condensate drain can shut down an otherwise perfectly functional air conditioner.

We’re nowhere near diagnosing all of that yet.

But before you can troubleshoot a system, you need to understand what the pieces are and how they fit together.


Introduction to HVAC: Start With the Big Picture

Before you can troubleshoot an air conditioner, you need some idea of what the thing is actually trying to accomplish.

In cooling:

We’re moving heat.

We’re moving air.

We’re controlling temperature.

We’re controlling humidity.

We’re moving refrigerant through a refrigeration circuit.

And we’re using electrical components and controls to make all of it happen.

That’s a lot of different systems interacting with each other.

Which is why HVAC technicians eventually need to know a little bit about a lot of things.

Electrical.

Mechanical systems.

Refrigeration.

Airflow.

Controls.

Plumbing.

Construction.

And occasionally psychology.

Keep Learning: How Air Conditioning Actually Works

You don’t need to memorize everything yet.

Understand the big picture first.

We’ll keep coming back to these components throughout the program.


Then I Broke Out the Tools

Now for the fun part.

I started pulling tools out.

Screwdrivers.

Nut drivers.

Adjustable wrenches.

Channel locks.

Needle-nose pliers.

Wire strippers.

Crimpers.

Cutters.

Tape measures.

Levels.

Utility knives.

Duct knives.

Meters.

Flashlights.

And approximately 47 other things that an HVAC technician eventually decides are absolutely necessary to survive.

For somebody who’s worked in the trade for years, most of this stuff seems obvious.

But that’s easy to forget.

Hand somebody who’s never worked HVAC a refrigeration service wrench and they’re going to look at you like:

“Okay… and?”

That’s why we start here.

Pick it up.

Look at it.

Learn its name.

Learn what it’s for.

Pretty soon we’re going to stop pointing at tools and start expecting you to use them.


The Tool Doesn’t Make the Technician

This was an important lesson to introduce early.

You can own the best tools money can buy.

The newest wireless probes.

The nicest digital manifold.

The most expensive meter.

Every gadget the internet says you need.

None of that automatically makes you a technician.

A meter can display a number.

The technician has to understand:

What does that number mean?

That’s what we’re eventually trying to build.

We’re absolutely going to use modern HVAC tools.

But we’re also going to understand the fundamentals underneath them.

Because we don’t want students who can only tell us:

“This is what the tool says.”

We want technicians who can explain:

“This is what the measurement tells me about the system.”

There’s a big difference.

Hands-On: Pick It Up

This sounds ridiculously simple.

That’s because it is.

But there’s value in physically handling tools when you’re brand new to a trade.

A pair of wire strippers is obvious to somebody who’s used them 10,000 times.

Not necessarily to somebody who hasn’t.

Same with a tubing cutter.

Crimper.

Nut driver.

Service wrench.

You can put a picture on a screen and say:

“This is a tubing cutter.”

Or you can hand somebody one.

Let them open it.

Turn the wheel.

See how it works.

Put it against a piece of copper.

Now the lesson starts sticking.

We’re going to do a lot of that.


The Right Tool Matters

There’s another lesson hidden inside the tool discussion.

Use the right tool for the job.

Can you sometimes accomplish something with the wrong tool?

Absolutely.

HVAC technicians have been inventing questionable ways of doing things since somebody installed the first air conditioner.

But there’s usually a reason the proper tool exists.

It makes the job easier.

It makes the job safer.

And very often:

It makes the finished work better.

Part of becoming a technician is learning what belongs in your tool bag.

The other part is learning when to reach for it.


Stuff That Isn’t in the Manual

Every week we also talk about things that aren’t necessarily part of the formal course.

Real jobs from the week.

Customer interactions.

Mistakes.

Things that went well.

Things that didn’t.

Things we learned.

How you talk to people.

How you behave inside somebody’s home.

Why you use a drop cloth.

Why you don’t leave insulation all over someone’s floor.

Why you clean the dirty fingerprints you just left on their white wall.

Why you don’t throw another technician under the bus just because you found something they missed.

Sometimes we’re the technician who missed it.

The technical side of HVAC matters.

So does learning how to actually be a professional in somebody’s home.

Those conversations will happen throughout this entire program.


Take Care of Your Tools

We also talked about taking care of the tools that make you money.

Don’t leave them scattered across somebody’s attic.

Don’t throw them in the dirt.

Don’t leave them on top of the condenser and drive away.

When another technician lets you borrow something:

Give it back.

And yes, every brand-new technician is going to keep his tool bag perfectly organized.

His van will be immaculate.

Every tool will go back into its protective case after every use.

We believe you.

What Should a Student Know After Week 2?

We’re not expecting mastery after one Saturday.

We’re building skills.

By the end of Week 2, students should be more comfortable recognizing the basic layout of an HVAC system, identifying indoor and outdoor equipment, understanding the basic roles of airflow and refrigeration, recognizing common HVAC terminology, identifying common HVAC hand tools, understanding what those tools are generally used for, and physically handling tools that may have been completely unfamiliar before class.

Most importantly:

The HVAC system in the shop should look a little less mysterious than it did during Week 1.

That’s progress.


Week 1: Blank Stares. Week 2: “I Remember That.”

There’s something satisfying about watching somebody start learning a trade.

During Week 1, I could point at something on the shop system and start explaining it like these guys had spent their entire lives thinking about air conditioning.

Then I’d look up.

Blank stares.

😂

Right.

Back up.

Let’s start way more basic.

But that’s how learning works.

Week 1:

“What is that?”

Week 2:

“Oh yeah. That’s the condenser.”

Then eventually:

“I remember that.”

Small wins.

But those small wins start stacking.

Nobody learns HVAC in a weekend.

You learn one thing.

Then another thing connects to it.

Then another.

Eventually you stop seeing a bunch of random components and start seeing a system.

The same thing happens with the tools.

Today:

“What’s this thing?”

Eventually:

You reach into your bag without looking and grab exactly what you need.

We’re nowhere near there yet.

But we’re moving.

One Saturday at a time.
