Indoor Air Quality Products: What Actually Works and What Do You Need?

Filters. UV lights. Ionizers. iWave. Dehumidifiers. Fresh air. Air purifiers. Your HVAC company would happily sell you all of them. Let’s figure out what they actually do first.

Indoor air quality might be one of the most aggressively marketed corners of the HVAC industry.

You call because your air conditioner isn’t cooling.

Twenty minutes later somebody is explaining that your house apparently needs:

A UV light.

An ionizer.

A giant filter.

An air purifier.

A dehumidifier.

A ventilation system.

Something with the word “plasma” in it.

And possibly a device developed using technology recovered from a crashed spacecraft.

All available today.

For only:

$147 per month.

Calm down.

Indoor air quality absolutely matters.

Florida homes deal with:

Humidity.

Dust.

Pet hair and dander.

Pollen.

Cooking particles.

Outdoor pollutants.

Odors.

Moisture.

And biological growth when conditions allow it.

But there isn’t one magical HVAC accessory that fixes:

AIR.

Different indoor air quality products address different problems.

That’s the important part.

So instead of starting with:

“Which air purifier should I buy?”

Start with:

“What problem am I actually trying to solve?”

Welcome to A/C University.


First: What Is Indoor Air Quality?

Indoor Air Quality—or IAQ—is simply a broad term describing the quality of the air inside a building and the factors that can affect the people occupying it.

Those factors can include:

Particles.

Moisture.

Humidity.

Outdoor air entering the building.

Building materials.

Household products.

Cooking.

Pets.

HVAC system condition.

Ventilation.

And plenty more.

The EPA currently describes three basic strategies for improving indoor air quality:

1. Control the source.

2. Improve ventilation.

3. Use filtration or supplemental air cleaning.

That’s important because:

Buying another gadget isn’t necessarily Step One.

If there’s a moisture problem creating biological growth?

Fix the moisture problem.

If something inside the house is producing an odor?

Find the source.

If your HVAC system is filthy?

Clean the appropriate components.

If humidity is consistently excessive?

Figure out why.

Air-cleaning equipment can be useful.

But it shouldn’t become a technological Band-Aid over a problem we could actually correct.


Let’s Start With the Boring One: Your Air Filter

Everybody wants to talk about UV lights and ionization.

Meanwhile:

Your filter is sitting there doing actual work.

A traditional HVAC filter removes particles from the air as air passes through it.

Depending on the filter, that can include varying amounts of:

Dust.

Lint.

Pollen.

Pet dander.

And smaller airborne particles.

Filters are generally rated using MERV, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value.

Generally, increasing MERV means increasing the filter’s ability to capture smaller particles.

Which immediately leads homeowners to:

“GIVE ME THE HIGHEST MERV POSSIBLE.”

Not necessarily.


Your HVAC System Still Has to Breathe

A more restrictive filter can increase resistance to airflow.

And airflow matters.

A lot.

If your duct system, filter rack, blower and equipment aren’t designed for a highly restrictive filter, installing one because:

MORE FILTRATION = MORE BETTER

can create another problem.

We care about:

Filter size.

Filter surface area.

Airflow.

Static pressure.

Equipment requirements.

Duct design.

And filtration.

All of it has to work together.

Sometimes a properly sized deeper media filter is an excellent upgrade.

Sometimes the inexpensive filter already in the system is perfectly appropriate.

We don’t choose filters by finding the biggest number on the package.


What About HEPA?

HEPA filtration can provide very high particle-removal efficiency.

But true HEPA filtration can also create substantial resistance to airflow.

That’s why you can’t necessarily grab a HEPA filter and shove it into the one-inch slot beside your air handler.

Dedicated HEPA filtration systems and portable HEPA air cleaners are different animals.

For someone specifically concerned about airborne particles in a bedroom or living area, a properly sized portable HEPA air cleaner can sometimes make considerably more sense than trying to turn the entire central HVAC system into something it wasn’t designed to be.

Again:

Identify the problem first.

Then choose the tool.


What Does a UV Light Do?

UV-C lights are another common HVAC indoor-air-quality product.

And these actually have a very specific application.

Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation—or UVGI—uses ultraviolet energy to inactivate microorganisms under the right conditions.

In residential HVAC systems, UV lights are commonly installed near:

The evaporator coil.

Drain pan.

Or another area where biological growth may occur.

That can make sense because your evaporator coil spends much of the Florida cooling season:

Cold.

Wet.

Dark.

Basically beachfront property for things that enjoy cold, wet, dark environments.

UV can be useful for surface treatment, particularly around the coil area.

But here’s what it doesn’t do:

It doesn’t vacuum dust out of your house.

UV isn’t a particle filter.

It doesn’t catch dog hair.

It doesn’t remove sand.

It doesn’t replace proper filtration.

It doesn’t repair moisture problems.

It doesn’t replace maintenance.

And it doesn’t magically sterilize your entire house because there’s a purple light inside the air handler.

EPA recognizes UVGI as an established treatment technology for inactivating microorganisms when appropriately designed and applied, but also emphasizes that UV treatment supplements rather than replaces effective filtration and ventilation.


What Is an Ionizer?

Now we get to the fun stuff.

Ionization.

An air ionizer electrically charges molecules in the air.

Those ions can interact with airborne particles, giving particles an electrical charge and affecting how they behave.

One mechanism is agglomeration:

Smaller particles can cluster together into larger particles.

Those larger particles may then be more readily captured by filtration or settle onto surfaces.

Different products use different designs and terminology.

You’ll hear things like:

Ionization.

Bipolar ionization.

Needlepoint bipolar ionization.

Plasma.

And various manufacturer-specific names.

This category requires a little more homework than:

“Fancy box = clean air.”


What Is an iWave?

An iWave is an HVAC-mounted ionization product.

The manufacturer describes iWave technology as needlepoint bipolar ionization.

The device is installed in the HVAC system and generates positive and negative ions that enter the air stream.

According to the manufacturer, those ions interact with airborne particles and can cause smaller particles to cluster together, making them easier to remove from the breathing zone or capture through filtration.

The easiest homeowner explanation is:

Your filter waits for particles to come to it.

An ionizer changes the electrical characteristics of particles moving through the air.

Different technology.

Different job.


Is an iWave the Same Thing as an Ozone Generator?

No.

And this distinction matters.

An intentional ozone generator is designed to produce ozone.

We do not recommend intentional ozone generators for occupied homes.

EPA explicitly advises against using ozone generators as residential air cleaners in occupied spaces because ozone is a lung irritant, and concentrations low enough to meet health standards are generally ineffective at controlling most indoor contaminants.

Ionization equipment is a different category.

However, some electronic air-cleaning technologies can produce ozone as a byproduct, which is why we think homeowners should pay attention to independent ozone-emissions testing and certification instead of accepting:

“Don’t worry about it.”

as a technical specification. EPA makes this same distinction and cautions that some electronic air cleaners can generate ozone or other byproducts.

iWave states that its products meet applicable ozone-emission standards; its current documentation says iWave is certified under UL 867 for ozone limits, while NuShield carries UL 2998 zero-ozone-emissions certification.

The larger point is:

Know what you’re installing.

“Air purifier” is marketing language.

The technology underneath matters.


Does an iWave Replace My Filter?

No.

Please keep your filter.

Ionization and filtration can work together, but they’re not the same thing.

Your mechanical filter physically captures particles passing through it.

An ionization system interacts with airborne particles electrically.

You still need appropriate filtration.

You still need to change or clean the filter.

You still need adequate airflow.

And yes:

The air conditioner still needs maintenance.

We have unfortunately not yet invented the $449 device that eliminates HVAC maintenance forever.

We’ll let you know.


What About Electronic Air Cleaners?

There are also electronic air cleaners designed to electrically charge particles and collect them.

One example is an electrostatic precipitator.

Instead of relying entirely on disposable filter media, these systems can use electrically charged collection surfaces.

They can be effective at particle removal depending on their design and condition.

But:

Collection plates need cleaning.

Performance can change as they become dirty.

And some electronic air-cleaning technologies can produce ozone or other byproducts.

Again:

Technology matters more than the phrase “air purifier.”


What About Activated Carbon?

Now we’re dealing with a different problem:

Gases and odors.

Particle filters are primarily designed for:

Particles.

Activated carbon and other sorbent media are designed to adsorb certain:

Odors.

Gases.

And volatile organic compounds.

That’s why you sometimes see filtration products combining:

Particle filtration + carbon.

But carbon has limits too.

It eventually becomes saturated.

The amount of carbon matters.

The particular contaminant matters.

And a tiny black strip glued onto a filter isn’t necessarily going to eliminate every odor known to mankind.

EPA notes that gas-phase filtration can help with certain gaseous pollutants when enough appropriate sorbent media is used, but no single sorbent removes every gaseous contaminant.


And Then There’s Humidity

This is Florida.

We cannot have an indoor-air-quality conversation without talking about:

HUMIDITY.

Sometimes the homeowner says:

“The air feels bad.”

And what they’re actually experiencing is:

Excessive indoor humidity.

The house feels clammy.

Odors linger.

Surfaces stay damp.

Comfort suffers.

And moisture can contribute to biological growth.

No ionizer fixes an oversized air conditioner that isn’t adequately dehumidifying the house.

No UV light fixes water entering through a building envelope problem.

No fancy filter removes gallons of moisture from the air.

Sometimes the IAQ solution is:

Fix the humidity problem.

EPA currently recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60%, ideally around 30–50% when practical.

In Florida, maintaining the lower end of that range year-round may not always be realistic, but persistent indoor humidity above 60% deserves attention.


What Does a Whole-House Dehumidifier Do?

Exactly what the name suggests.

It removes moisture from the air.

A properly applied whole-house dehumidifier can operate independently or alongside the HVAC system to help control indoor humidity.

This can be useful when:

The cooling system satisfies temperature before removing enough moisture.

The home has significant latent load.

The building is very tight.

Occupancy creates substantial moisture.

Outdoor-air ventilation introduces humidity.

Or the house simply struggles with moisture during certain conditions.

But again:

Diagnose first.

If the humidity problem exists because the air conditioner is oversized, ductwork is pulling humid attic air into the house, or there’s a building moisture problem?

We’d rather identify that than immediately bolt another machine onto the duct system.


What About Fresh-Air Ventilation?

Here’s another weird truth about indoor air quality:

Sometimes the problem is that we’re extremely good at keeping outdoor air:

Outside.

Modern buildings can be relatively tight.

That’s great for energy efficiency.

But people inside the house still:

Cook.

Shower.

Clean.

Breathe.

Use household products.

Own dogs.

And occasionally burn dinner.

Controlled ventilation can introduce outdoor air while exhausting or diluting indoor contaminants.

There are multiple ways to accomplish this depending on the building and climate.

But in Florida, outdoor air also contains:

Heat and moisture.

So simply cutting a hole in the house and saying:

FRESH AIR!

is not a ventilation strategy.

Outdoor air needs to be introduced intentionally.


What Are ERVs?

An Energy Recovery Ventilator, or ERV, allows outdoor air and exhaust air to exchange some heat and moisture energy without directly mixing the two air streams.

That can reduce the energy penalty associated with bringing outdoor air into a conditioned building.

ERVs can be useful in appropriate applications.

But:

Not every Florida house needs one.

Again, we’re back to the recurring theme of this article.

What problem are we solving?


What About Portable Air Purifiers?

Portable room air cleaners can absolutely have a place.

In fact, sometimes they’re the simplest answer.

A properly sized portable HEPA air cleaner can provide additional particle filtration in:

A bedroom.

Office.

Living room.

Nursery.

Or another specific area.

You don’t necessarily need to modify the entire HVAC system because you want better particle filtration in one room.

When evaluating a portable unit, pay attention to its CADR, or Clean Air Delivery Rate, and the size of the room it’s intended to serve.

A tiny purifier sitting in the corner of a giant great room isn’t doing much besides:

Looking optimistic.


So Which IAQ Product Is Best?

Wrong question.

There isn’t one best IAQ product.

Instead:

What’s the problem?

If your problem is:

Dust and airborne particles?

Start with appropriate filtration.

If your problem is:

Biological growth around a wet HVAC coil?

UV may be worth considering.

If your goal is:

Supplemental particle treatment throughout the HVAC air stream?

Ionization may be something to evaluate.

If your problem is:

Persistent high humidity?

Investigate the HVAC system, building, ductwork and possibly dehumidification.

If your problem is:

Odors or certain gaseous contaminants?

Source control, ventilation and appropriate sorbent filtration may matter.

If your problem is:

Stale indoor air in a tight building?

Ventilation may deserve consideration.

If your problem is:

Pet hair everywhere?

You own a pet.

Congratulations.


What Would We Start With?

Before selling you anything, we’d rather look at:

1. The source.

Is there an actual contamination or moisture source we can eliminate?

2. Humidity.

Is the house staying appropriately dry?

3. The HVAC system.

Is the coil clean?

Is the blower clean?

Is the drain working?

Is the system sized and operating properly?

4. Filtration.

Are you using an appropriate filter for the system?

Does the system have enough filter surface area?

What’s the static pressure?

5. Ductwork.

Are we pulling dirty or humid air from an attic, garage, crawlspace or other unintended area?

6. Ventilation.

Does the house have an actual ventilation issue?

7. Supplemental IAQ equipment.

Now let’s talk about UV, ionization, enhanced filtration, dehumidification or other equipment.

That’s remarkably close to EPA’s recommended hierarchy of source control → ventilation → supplemental filtration/air cleaning.

The $449 accessory doesn’t automatically get to skip to the front of the line.

Do You Need an iWave?

Maybe.

There’s the sales pitch.

😂

We don’t think every HVAC system automatically needs one.

If you’re interested in supplemental air treatment and understand what ionization actually does, an iWave may be worth considering.

But we’re not going to tell you:

Your family needs this to breathe safely.

We’re not going to scare you with a flashlight picture of some dust inside the air handler.

We’re not going to tell you your house is full of invisible death particles.

And we’re definitely not going to tell you an ionizer replaces:

Proper filtration.

Humidity control.

Maintenance.

Cleaning.

Source control.

Ventilation when needed.

Or fixing an actual HVAC problem.

It’s another tool.

That’s it.


Be Extremely Suspicious of IAQ Fear Marketing

This deserves its own section.

Indoor air quality products are particularly easy to sell using fear because:

You can’t see air.

A salesperson can say:

“Your house has contaminants.”

Okay.

Probably.

Every house does.

“You have bacteria.”

Possibly.

“You have mold spores.”

They’re present throughout the natural environment.

“You need this $2,800 purification package immediately.”

Hold on.

What exactly did we find?

What problem are we solving?

What does this product actually remove or treat?

Is there independent testing?

Does it produce any byproducts?

What maintenance does it require?

What does replacement cost?

How does it affect airflow?

And is there a simpler way to address the problem?

Those are reasonable questions.


We Sell IAQ Products. We’re Just Not Going to Pretend They’re Magic.

This is probably the strangest sales pitch on our website.

We install:

Filtration upgrades.

UV products.

Ionization products such as iWave.

Humidity-control equipment.

And other indoor-air-quality solutions when appropriate.

We think these products can have legitimate applications.

We also think you should understand exactly what you’re buying.

An air-quality accessory should have a reason for being installed.

Not:

TECHNICIAN HAD SALES QUOTA.


The Bottom Line

Indoor air quality isn’t one problem.

So there isn’t one solution.

Different technologies do different things.

Mechanical filters

Capture airborne particles.

HEPA filtration

Provides very high-efficiency particle filtration when properly applied.

UV-C / UVGI

Can help inactivate microorganisms, particularly when properly applied to HVAC surfaces or air treatment.

Ionizers such as iWave

Electrically charge particles and can change how airborne particles behave, supplementing filtration.

Activated carbon and other sorbents

Can help address certain gases and odors.

Dehumidifiers

Remove moisture.

Ventilation systems

Introduce controlled outdoor air and dilute indoor contaminants.

ERVs

Provide controlled ventilation while exchanging some energy between incoming and outgoing air streams.

Portable air cleaners

Can provide targeted filtration in specific rooms.

And none of them replaces:

Finding and fixing the actual problem.

If your coil is dirty?

Clean it.

If the house is too humid?

Find out why.

If the ductwork is pulling attic air?

Fix the ducts.

If your filter is inadequate?

Fix the filtration.

If there’s a source of pollution inside the house?

Control the source.

Then, if supplemental IAQ equipment makes sense:

Great.

We’ll install it.

We just don’t think your air conditioner needs every accessory in the catalog simply because somebody figured out how to finance them.
