Things We Won’t Sell You
This is probably a strange page for an HVAC company’s website.
Most companies use their websites to tell you about all the things they’d like to sell you.
We made a list of things we won’t.
Some of the products on this page are legitimate products with legitimate uses.
Some solve very specific problems.
Some make claims we’re not particularly convinced by.
And some appear to exist because somebody in an HVAC sales meeting asked:
“What else can we put on the ticket?”
Here’s the difference:
We don’t care whether we can sell something to you.
We want to know whether you actually need it.
And if we can’t explain what problem it solves, prove that you have that problem, and give you a reasonable explanation for why we think you should spend money fixing it?
Keep your money.

First, Our Rule
Before we recommend anything, we should be able to answer a few questions:
What problem are we solving?
How do we know you actually have that problem?
Will this product or repair reasonably solve it?
Is there a simpler or less expensive way to accomplish the same thing?
Would we put it in our own house?
If those answers suck, the sales pitch probably should too.
This applies whether we’re standing in a driveway in Palm Coast, crawling through an attic in Ormond Beach, fighting a drain line in Port Orange, or watching another condenser slowly return to the earth somewhere along Flagler Beach.
Same rule.
Show us the problem first.
Then we can talk about selling you something.

We Won’t Sell You a New A/C Because Yours Turned 10
Apparently air conditioners have birthdays now.
And somewhere along the way, the HVAC industry decided the tenth one is particularly traumatic.
“Your system is ten years old.”
Okay.
Is it broken?
If your 10-, 12-, or 14-year-old air conditioner is operating properly, keeping you comfortable, and isn’t becoming financially unreasonable to maintain:
Keep the damn thing.
We’ll maintain it.
Eventually, replacement will make sense.
Maybe a major repair changes the economics.
Maybe reliability becomes a problem.
Maybe corrosion is eating a beachside condenser alive.
Maybe you’re spending enough on repairs that continuing doesn’t make sense.
Those are legitimate conversations.
But:
OLD ≠ BROKEN.
Your air conditioner does not receive an eviction notice from Klein Cooling on its tenth birthday.

We Won’t Sell You a Compressor Because It Won’t Start
A compressor that won’t start might be bad.
It also might not be.
Before condemning one of the most expensive components in your HVAC system, we’d like to do this crazy thing called:
Testing it.
Is proper voltage reaching the compressor?
Is the capacitor within specification?
Is the contactor doing its job?
What are the winding resistances?
Is the compressor grounded?
Is it mechanically locked?
Is an internal overload open?
What are the refrigerant conditions?
What happened immediately before the failure?
There are tests for this stuff.
So:
“Compressor isn’t running”
does not automatically equal:
“You need a compressor.”
And it definitely doesn’t automatically equal:
“You need an entirely new air conditioner.”
Test it.
Prove it.
Then recommend it.
No parts cannon.

We Won’t Sell You a TXV Because the Pressures Look Weird
We have an entire article about this because apparently the TXV has become the HVAC industry’s favorite suspect.
Low suction pressure?
TXV.
High superheat?
TXV.
System not cooling?
Probably TXV.
Technician’s lunch was disappointing?
Honestly, check the TXV.
A thermostatic expansion valve absolutely can fail.
We’ve replaced them.
We’ll replace more of them.
But airflow problems, refrigerant charge problems, restrictions, sensing-bulb issues, installation problems, and other conditions can create readings that lead you toward the wrong conclusion.
A TXV is not bad because somebody looked at two gauges for 90 seconds and developed a feeling.
How do we know it’s bad?
That’s the question.

We Won’t Sell You Refrigerant Like It’s Gasoline
Your air conditioner does not burn refrigerant.
There is no little refrigerant gauge on the dashboard that eventually hits E.
If a properly sealed refrigeration system is low on refrigerant:
Where did it go?
That’s a considerably more useful question than:
“How many pounds do you want?”
There are situations where adding refrigerant is appropriate.
There are situations where leak detection makes sense.
There are situations where repairing the leak doesn’t make economic sense.
And sometimes a homeowner understands there’s a leak and makes an informed decision to add refrigerant anyway.
Fine.
What we don’t like is turning:
“We’ll just top it off every year.”
into an HVAC maintenance strategy.
Your A/C doesn’t need its ceremonial annual cup of Freon.

We Won’t Pour Magic Juice Into Your Refrigeration System Because Your Compressor Is Old
There are additives marketed to reduce friction, improve performance, rejuvenate seals, restore lost efficiency, stop leaks, or otherwise convince an aging compressor that it’s actually 22 again.
Some refrigeration additives may have specific legitimate applications.
That’s different from treating them like routine maintenance.
Your compressor doesn’t need essential oils.
If we’re going to introduce something into a sealed refrigeration circuit, we’d like a better reason than:
The brochure looked pretty convincing.

We Won’t Sell You a Hard-Start Kit Just Because Your A/C Exists
Hard-start kits are real.
They have legitimate applications.
There are systems and circumstances where one may be appropriate.
That does not mean every condenser in St. Augustine needs one attached to it like a participation trophy.
We want to know:
Why are we installing it?
What problem are we solving?
What does the manufacturer recommend?
What is happening electrically?
If there’s a legitimate reason, we’ll explain it.
If the entire diagnosis is:
“We put these on everything.”
We’re going to need a little more.

We Won’t Sell You a UV Light Because We Said the Word “Mold”
UV lights aren’t inherently bullshit.
Let’s get that out of the way.
Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation has legitimate applications.
A properly selected and installed UV system can be useful in certain HVAC applications, particularly where we’re trying to control biological growth on specific surfaces such as an evaporator coil.
That’s a very different claim from:
“This light will purify your entire house and protect your family from everything terrifying in this laminated picture.”
No.
We’re HVAC contractors.
We’re not going to diagnose your family’s health from inside an air handler.
And we’re not going to turn the word “mold” into a magic incantation that summons a $1,500 accessory.
What problem are we trying to solve?
Where is the UV being installed?
What is it actually capable of doing?
That’s the conversation.

We Won’t Sell You an Air Purifier Because the Box Has Lightning Bolts on It
Ionizers.
Plasma generators.
Electronic air cleaners.
Photocatalytic devices.
Bipolar-this.
Quantum-that.
Possibly something called Nano Mega Air Destroyer 9000™ by the time you read this.
Some air-cleaning technologies have evidence supporting particular applications.
Others make claims that deserve considerably more scrutiny.
If we’re going to tell you a device will:
“Purify your home’s air.”
we’d like to be able to explain what that actually means.
What contaminants?
At what efficiency?
Under what conditions?
What independent evidence supports the claim?
Because flashing LEDs inside your air handler are not, by themselves, scientific evidence.
They are very pretty, though.

We Won’t Sell You Duct Cleaning Because Five Years Have Passed
There are absolutely situations where duct cleaning can be appropriate.
Heavy contamination.
Construction debris.
Specific documented problems.
Things living in the ductwork that should not be living in the ductwork.
We have seen things.
But:
“You haven’t had your ducts cleaned in five years.”
isn’t a diagnosis.
Show us what’s in them.
Show us the problem.
Then let’s talk about whether cleaning is actually the appropriate solution.

We Won’t Sell You a Better Filter Without Checking Whether Your System Can Breathe Through It
This one drives us crazy.
Higher filtration can be great.
But filters create resistance to airflow.
And your HVAC system has limits.
So before we stuff the most restrictive filter we can find into your return because the package has a picture of a golden retriever and some microscopic pollen on it, maybe we should check:
Can your duct system actually handle it?
Static pressure matters.
Airflow matters.
Filter surface area matters.
Equipment requirements matter.
Otherwise, congratulations:
Your air is theoretically cleaner.
Unfortunately, none of it can get through the filter.

We Won’t Sell You a Smart Thermostat and Promise It Will Change Your Life
Smart thermostats are cool.
We install them.
Remote access can be useful.
Schedules can be useful.
Some systems can take advantage of additional controls and features.
But sometimes:
You bought a $300 rectangle that lets you make the house colder from Publix.
That’s fine too.
We just don’t need to pretend every Wi-Fi thermostat is an energy-efficiency revolution.
And on certain HVAC systems, thermostat compatibility actually matters.
The fanciest thermostat isn’t automatically the correct thermostat.

We Won’t Sell You a Surge Protector by Pretending Lightning Is Circling Your Condenser
We like surge protection.
Florida isn’t exactly known for its gentle electrical environment.
Whole-home and HVAC-specific surge protection can be perfectly reasonable investments.
What we don’t need to do is stand next to your condenser staring nervously at the sky while explaining that your control board could die TONIGHT unless you authorize this repair before we leave.
Explain the product.
Explain what it protects against.
Explain its limitations.
Give the homeowner the price.
Then let them decide.
Useful products don’t need hostage negotiations.

We Won’t Sell You a Drain Gadget and Promise You’ll Never Have Another Clogged Drain
This is Florida.
It is hot.
It is humid.
Your air conditioner produces a lot of condensate.
Things grow.
Slime happens.
Gravity remains undefeated.
There are products and maintenance strategies that can reduce drain problems.
Great.
What we won’t promise is:
“Install this and you’ll never have another clogged drain.”
Somewhere in Port Orange, a condensate line just heard that sentence and accepted the challenge.

We Won’t Sell You “Mold Treatment” Because Something Inside Your Air Handler Looks Gross
HVAC equipment gets dirty.
Drain pans get gross.
Insulation gets stained.
Coils collect things.
Florida humidity does Florida humidity things.
That does not mean an HVAC technician should point a flashlight at something, whisper “mold,” and immediately transition into financing options.
There are circumstances where suspected biological growth deserves attention.
There are also professionals qualified to identify things we’re not qualified to identify.
We can tell you what we observe.
We can clean HVAC equipment when appropriate.
We can discuss moisture and HVAC conditions.
But fear is not a diagnostic instrument.

We Won’t Replace Parts That Test Good
This might be the simplest thing on this entire page.
Your capacitor is within manufacturer tolerance?
We’re not replacing it because it’s old.
Your contactor is operating properly?
We’re not replacing it because the contacts don’t look brand new.
Your blower motor is operating within specification?
We’re not replacing it because we’re already standing next to it.
Your compressor tests good?
We’re not condemning it because replacing the system would be more profitable.
Components fail.
When they do, we’ll recommend replacing them.
But there should be a reason.
And whenever possible:
We should be able to show you.

We Also Won’t Sell You a “Torque Inverter”
Mostly because we have no idea what the hell that is.
We’ve seen ordinary HVAC components given proprietary-sounding names that make it considerably harder for homeowners to determine what they’re actually being quoted.
We’re not doing that.
If your capacitor failed, we’re going to tell you:
Your capacitor failed.
Not:
Your Dynamic Torque Inversion Module has experienced a performance degradation event.
Your contactor is a contactor.
Your blower motor is a blower motor.
Your TXV is a TXV.
Your capacitor is a capacitor.
We don’t need to rename a $30 component the:
Quantum Climate Torque Optimization Module™
before presenting you with a repair price.
And here’s the truly radical part:
We want you to Google it.
Seriously.
Google the part.
Look at pictures.
Read what it does.
See what the component itself costs online.
Learn how it fails.
Learn how it’s tested.
Then ask us:
“Why does your installed repair cost more than the part?”
We’ll explain it.
You’re not simply buying the object.
You’re paying for diagnosis, the service call, stocked or procured inventory, professional installation, testing, warranty, overhead, and a company that intends to still answer the phone if something goes wrong.
We don’t need to hide that behind a made-up name.
The part costs what it costs.
Our repair costs what it costs.
Those are two different numbers.
And we’re perfectly comfortable explaining why.

We Won’t Charge More Because Your Neighborhood Has a Gate
Since we’re already ruining perfectly good HVAC sales techniques, let’s do this one too.
Your ZIP code doesn’t determine your repair price.
Your home value doesn’t determine your repair price.
The vehicle in your driveway doesn’t determine your repair price.
And the fact that we had to surrender identification to enter your neighborhood doesn’t unlock the Grand Haven Pricing Menu.
Whether we’re replacing the same failed capacitor under the same circumstances in Pine Lakes, Palm Harbor, Grand Haven, Flagler Beach, or somewhere down in Ormond Beach:
Same repair. Same circumstances. Same price.
Our prices are based on what we need to charge to perform the work properly, pay our people properly, stand behind our work, keep the lights on, make a fair and reasonable profit, and still provide a fair price to the homeowner.
There is no gated-community tax.

We Won’t Pretend We Don’t Make Money
This one might be the weirdest HVAC gimmick of all.
Of course we make money on repairs.
We’re a business.
The capacitor we install costs less than the repair.
The thermostat costs less than the repair.
The contactor costs less than the repair.
The motor costs less than the repair.
You are allowed to know that.
Our technicians need to be paid.
Our trucks need fuel.
Our insurance company remains stubbornly opposed to accepting good intentions as payment.
Tools cost money.
Training costs money.
Warranty calls cost money.
The office costs money.
And after all of that:
Klein Cooling needs to make a profit.
We’re not ashamed of that.
What we don’t believe in is disguising ordinary components, hiding prices until after the work, or inventing products you don’t need because we need a bigger ticket.
Fair price for the homeowner.
Fair profit for the company.
Both can exist at the same time.

We Won’t Tell You Your Only Option Is Replacement When It Isn’t
Sometimes replacing the system is absolutely the right decision.
Sometimes repairing it makes more sense.
Sometimes both options are reasonable.
If your 13-year-old system needs an expensive compressor repair, we should probably talk about replacement.
But if your 13-year-old system needs a capacitor?
It needs a capacitor.
You don’t need a funeral.
We aren’t going to turn every repair opportunity into a replacement presentation simply because replacement has a bigger number attached to it.
We’ll tell you what failed.
We’ll tell you what the repair costs.
If replacement deserves to be part of the conversation, we’ll explain why.
Then:
You decide.
It’s your house.
It’s your air conditioner.
And most importantly:
It’s your money.

We Won’t Create Three Options Just Because Somebody Taught a Sales Class
There are times when homeowners genuinely have multiple reasonable choices.
Great.
We’ll explain them.
But we’re not going to manufacture:
GOOD — $489
BETTER — $1,294
BEST — $3,817
when the actual problem is:
Your capacitor failed.
Sometimes the correct number of options is three.
Sometimes it’s two.
Sometimes it’s:
“This part is bad. Here’s what it costs to replace it.”
Not every service call needs to become a behavioral economics experiment.

We Won’t Scare You Into Buying Something Today
If a condition is genuinely unsafe, we’ll tell you.
If continuing to operate the equipment could cause additional damage, we’ll tell you.
If there’s a legitimate reason something needs immediate attention, we’ll explain it.
But:
“This price is only good while I’m sitting at your kitchen table.”
is not an HVAC emergency.
If the recommendation can’t survive you sleeping on it, Googling it, calling your spouse, getting another quote, or asking another contractor what they think:
Maybe the recommendation has a problem.

Get a Second Opinion
Seriously.
Especially on expensive repairs.
If someone tells you that you need:
A compressor.
A TXV.
An evaporator coil.
A major refrigerant repair.
Or an entirely new HVAC system.
And something doesn’t feel right?
Get another opinion.
We offer free second opinions on qualifying major HVAC diagnoses.
Sometimes we’ll disagree with the first contractor.
Sometimes we’ll agree completely.
Sometimes we’ll find something neither of us expected.
The goal isn’t to prove another technician wrong.
The goal is to figure out:
What’s actually wrong with the air conditioner?
That’s it.

Things We WILL Sell You
After several thousand words explaining what we won’t sell you, we should probably clarify that Klein Cooling is, in fact, still a business.
We sell HVAC repairs.
We sell air-conditioning systems.
We sell maintenance.
We sell thermostats.
We sell accessories.
We sell indoor-air-quality products when there’s a legitimate application.
We sell surge protection.
We sell plenty of things.
But first:
There needs to be a reason.
And we should be able to explain it.

The Most Important Question on This Website
If a technician tells you something has failed, ask:
“How do you know?”
Not confrontationally.
Not because every HVAC technician is trying to rip you off.
Most aren’t.
HVAC diagnostics can be difficult.
Good technicians get things wrong.
We’ve gotten things wrong.
That’s exactly why testing matters.
If we tell you your capacitor is bad, we should be able to measure it.
If we tell you there’s an airflow problem, we should be able to measure it.
If we tell you the refrigerant charge isn’t correct, there should be readings behind that conclusion.
If we tell you your compressor is electrically failed, there should be tests behind that conclusion.
Symptoms point us toward problems.
Testing proves them.

Google the component.
Google the repair.
Google what we told you.

Google the part.
Look up what it costs.
Ask what it does.
Ask why we’re recommending it.
Ask why our installed repair costs more than the component sitting on a shelf.
And above all:
Ask us how we know it’s bad.
If our recommendation can’t survive you understanding it…
we probably shouldn’t be recommending it.
