Are You Sure About This?
A Letter to the HVAC Apprentice
So you want to be an HVAC technician.
Cool.
Are you sure about this?
It’s 5:07 on a Friday afternoon.
You told your girl you’d be home by 2:30.
That was adorable.
You’re standing in the driveway of your last call looking at a two-story house.
The homeowner opens the door.
“Air handler’s in the attic.”
Of course it is.
You pull down the attic stairs and immediately feel 150-degree air hit you in the face.
You look up.
Then you look back at your service truck.
For approximately three seconds, plumbing starts looking like a pretty respectable career.
Welcome to HVAC.
You’re Going Up There
Here’s your first lesson:
Nobody cares that it’s hot.
The homeowner is hot too.
That’s why you’re there.
Their house is 86 degrees. Their kids are miserable. Their dog is lying directly on the tile floor. They’ve already called three companies, and you’re the one who showed up.
So grab your meter.
Grab your flashlight.
Grab some water.
And get in the attic.
Carefully.
Because it’s 150 degrees, you’re sweating through your shirt, the insulation is covering the ceiling joists, and one wrong step means you’re about to introduce yourself to the homeowner by coming through the guest-bedroom ceiling.
This trade will teach you to pray.
Please don’t fall through the ceiling.
Your Friday Night Is Not the Customer’s Problem
This one takes a while to learn.
You had plans.
We all have plans.
Dinner.
Date night.
Fishing.
Your kid’s game.
You thought you were almost done.
Then dispatch sent:
“One more.”
It sucks.
But when you pull into that driveway, none of that walks through the front door with you.
The homeowner didn’t ruin your Friday night.
Their air conditioner broke.
They may have been at work all day too.
They may have an elderly parent in the house.
They may have a baby.
They may simply be hot and miserable.
Whatever the situation, they deserve the same technician at 5:00 p.m. that your 9:00 a.m. customer got.
Don’t rush the diagnosis because you’re hungry.
Don’t skip measurements because your friends are waiting.
Don’t replace the first thing that looks suspicious because you want to get home.
That’s exactly when mistakes happen.
And nothing ruins a Friday night quite like returning Saturday morning to fix what you rushed Friday afternoon.
Slow Down
This may be the most important thing I can teach you.
Slow down.
When you’re new, you desperately want to know the answer.
You want to walk up to the equipment, hear a noise and say:
“Capacitor.”
You want to connect gauges, look at the suction pressure and say:
“TXV.”
You want to see the outdoor fan running with the compressor off and say:
“Bad compressor.”
It makes you feel like a technician.
It makes you look confident.
There’s just one problem.
What if you’re wrong?
Confidence without evidence isn’t diagnostics.
It’s guessing with a tool bag.
“Are You Sure?”
Get used to hearing that.
If you’re working with a good journeyman, you’re eventually going to tell him:
“It’s the compressor.”
And he’s going to ask:
“Are you sure?”
Yep.
You checked it.
“How do you know?”
Well…
It isn’t running.
That’s not proof.
“What voltage do you have?”
Uh…
“Did you check the capacitor?”
Not yet.
“Is it on internal overload?”
…
Go get your meter.
He’s not trying to embarrass you.
He’s teaching you something that can save a homeowner thousands of dollars:
Don’t condemn something you can’t prove is bad.
Your Meter Is There for a Reason
You’re going to develop instincts.
Eventually you’ll walk up to equipment and have a pretty good idea what’s wrong before you ever open the panel.
That’s experience.
But here’s the difference between a good technician and a parts changer:
The good technician still verifies it.
You think the capacitor is bad?
Measure it.
You think the motor is bad?
Test it.
You think the compressor is grounded?
Prove it.
You think the TXV is restricted?
Show me the refrigeration measurements that support it—and make sure the airflow is right before you start blaming the refrigerant circuit.
Your experience should tell you where to look.
Your measurements should tell you whether you’re right.
Stop Looking for the Bad Part
This is another trap.
You’re not actually there to find the bad part.
You’re there to figure out what happened to the system.
Those aren’t always the same thing.
Maybe the capacitor failed.
Great.
Why?
Maybe the compressor is sitting on overload.
Okay.
Why?
Maybe the evaporator is frozen.
Wonderful.
Why?
The first abnormal thing you find isn’t necessarily the root cause.
HVAC systems are systems.
Airflow affects refrigeration.
Refrigeration affects compressor operation.
Electrical problems affect everything.
Controls affect whether components are even allowed to operate.
The better you become at this trade, the less interested you’ll become in individual parts.
You’ll start looking at the whole machine.
The Gauges Don’t Diagnose Anything
You’re going to love your gauges.
Everybody does.
They’re shiny.
They have numbers.
If you bought digital probes, they might even calculate superheat and subcooling for you.
Congratulations.
They still don’t know what’s wrong with the air conditioner.
They tell you what’s happening inside the refrigeration system.
That’s incredibly valuable.
But you have to interpret it.
Low suction pressure doesn’t mean:
“Needs refrigerant.”
A frozen coil doesn’t mean:
“Bad TXV.”
High head pressure doesn’t automatically mean:
“Overcharged.”
Numbers are clues.
Your job is figuring out why those numbers exist.
That’s the difference between reading gauges and understanding refrigeration.
Sometimes “I Don’t Know Yet” Is the Correct Answer
This one is hard.
Especially when you’re young.
The homeowner is standing there.
Your journeyman is watching you.
You want an answer.
So your brain starts desperately trying to turn incomplete information into certainty.
Don’t.
There will be service calls where the system was doing something strange before you arrived…
…and now it’s working perfectly.
Fantastic.
There will be compressors that are sitting on internal overload and can’t be fully evaluated yet.
Intermittent control problems that disappear.
Drain safeties that reset.
Communication faults that clear.
Sometimes you won’t know.
Say it.
“I haven’t proven the failure yet.”
That’s not weakness.
That’s professionalism.
You can explain what you’ve tested, what you’ve ruled out, what you suspect and what needs to happen next.
Never invent certainty because you’re afraid of looking inexperienced.
Some of the most experienced technicians you’ll ever meet say:
“I don’t know yet.”
The important word is yet.
You’re Working in Someone’s Home
Don’t forget this.
You spend all day walking into houses, so eventually it starts feeling normal.
It isn’t normal to them.
You’re a stranger.
They’re letting you into their bedroom.
Their closet.
Their garage.
Their attic.
They’re trusting you around their kids, pets and belongings.
Act accordingly.
Wear your shoe covers.
Put something under your tools.
Don’t lean your meter against their white wall.
Don’t leave wire clippings on the floor.
Don’t drag insulation through the hallway.
Don’t swear around their kids.
Don’t leave the attic access covered in fingerprints.
And for the love of everything holy:
Clean up after yourself.
A homeowner may not understand whether your superheat calculation was perfect.
They absolutely understand that you left their hallway looking like a construction site.
Talk to the Homeowner
You’re going to know things they don’t know.
That’s not impressive.
It’s literally your job.
The skill is explaining those things without making the homeowner feel stupid.
Don’t say:
“Your suction saturation was low with elevated superheat and normal subcooling.”
Wonderful.
You sound very smart.
The homeowner has absolutely no idea what you just said.
Try:
“The indoor coil isn’t getting enough refrigerant. Now we need to figure out why.”
Then show them.
Good technicians don’t hide behind technical language.
They make complicated things understandable.
If you really understand something, you should be able to explain it simply.
Don’t Trash the Last Guy
You’re going to see some things.
Oh, buddy.
You’re going to see some things.
Wires twisted together.
Drain lines running uphill.
Equipment you genuinely cannot figure out how someone got into the attic.
Ductwork that appears to have been designed during an earthquake.
You will occasionally stare at something and think:
What the hell happened here?
Keep that thought inside your head for a minute.
Maybe the previous technician screwed up.
Maybe he didn’t.
Maybe you’re looking at a repair made during an emergency ten years ago.
Maybe someone changed something after he left.
Maybe you’re missing information.
Explain what you see.
Explain why it’s a problem.
Explain how you’d correct it.
You don’t have to build yourself up by tearing another technician down.
Your work should do that for you.
Ask the Old Guy Why
You’re going to work around technicians who have forgotten more about HVAC than you currently know.
Use that.
Don’t just watch what they do.
Ask:
“Why?”
Why did you check that first?
Why did you take that measurement?
Why did you change the blower speed?
Why are you checking static pressure before connecting gauges?
Why did you know that compressor was probably on overload?
Why are we leaving this system alone instead of replacing that rusty part?
And when he answers, listen.
Don’t ask questions just so you can immediately tell him what you saw on TikTok.
Listen.
One day, you’ll be the old guy.
Some apprentice will be riding with you.
And you’ll hear yourself saying something your journeyman told you 20 years earlier.
That’s how trades survive.
Being Fast Isn’t the Same as Being Good
Eventually you’ll get faster.
Your tool bag will get smaller.
You’ll know exactly what you need.
You’ll recognize patterns.
You’ll stop making six trips to the truck.
You’ll know which panel screws are about to disappear into the grass before they disappear into the grass.
Speed comes.
Don’t chase it.
Chase accuracy.
Do the job correctly enough times and speed will follow naturally.
A 15-minute diagnosis that results in the wrong $2,000 repair isn’t impressive.
A 45-minute diagnosis that correctly identifies the problem is.
The customer isn’t paying you to leave quickly.
They’re paying you to be right.
You’re Going to Screw Up
Yep.
You.
Me.
Every technician who’s ever carried a meter.
You’re going to misdiagnose something.
You’re going to forget something.
You’re going to drop a screw into a place that violates the known laws of physics.
You’re going to drive 45 minutes away from a job and suddenly think:
“Did I put the disconnect back in?”
You’ll make mistakes.
What matters is what you do next.
Own it.
Fix it.
Learn from it.
Don’t hide it.
Don’t blame the apprentice when you are the apprentice.
And don’t make the same mistake five times and call it experience.
Take Pride in the Boring Stuff
Everybody wants to diagnose the impossible problem.
Nobody posts Instagram videos about:
“Look how nicely I strapped this thermostat wire.”
Do it anyway.
Straighten the wires.
Secure the drain.
Seal the penetration.
Put the panel screws back.
Clean the equipment.
Make the lineset look intentional.
Label things.
Take your readings.
Document your work.
Pick up your trash.
The difference between average craftsmanship and excellent craftsmanship is often a hundred little things nobody explicitly told you to do.
Do them anyway.
Your name is on the job even when your name isn’t literally on the job.
And Now It’s 6:43
Remember your Friday?
You’re still here.
But the compressor wasn’t bad.
It was sitting on internal overload.
You let it cool.
You found the actual problem.
You corrected it.
The system is running.
Supply air is getting colder.
The thermostat just dropped a degree.
The homeowner walks over.
“Man, thank you. Seriously.”
You pack your tools.
Climb into the truck.
Your shirt is soaked.
There’s insulation stuck to your arms.
You have no idea where your 5/16-inch bit went.
You text your girl:
“Leaving now.”
She responds:
“You said 2:30.”
Yep.
Welcome to HVAC.
Tomorrow you’ll wake up and do it again.
And eventually something strange happens.
The attic doesn’t bother you quite as much.
The wiring diagrams start making sense.
You stop guessing.
You start seeing systems instead of parts.
Customers start asking specifically for you.
The new apprentice starts asking you questions.
And one Friday afternoon, he’ll look at you and say:
“I think it’s the compressor.”
You’ll look at the clock.
5:07.
You’ll look at the attic.
You’ll think about dinner.
Then you’ll look back at him.
“Are you sure?”
